Summary

The Madame Psychosis Hour dramatized: after the patricidal-catharsis show "Those Were the Legends That Formerly Were" (tonight a cartoonishly w-voiced paean to a record-setting punter), the asthmatic student engineer sound-checks the screened, contractually dead-air-preceded Madame Psychosis, who opens with "And Lo... Look at that fucker Dance" and spends the hour reading, over eerie pendulum-music, the recruiting circular of the Union of the Hideously and Improbably Deformed — a litany of every disfigurement the species offers, "Come don the veil of the type and token." Across the river, Mario Incandenza — her most devoted listener, certain she can't sense "the compelling beauty and light she projects" — listens hunched at the HmH speaker through one of Avril's late suppers, an occasion the narration uses to unfold the Avril/JOI marriage-as-compromise, E.T.A.'s trivium-quadrivium curriculum, and Avril's phobias about disembodied voices and closed doors. Her sound-check line "Like most marriages, theirs was the evolved product of concordance and compromise" resurfaces, lightly recast, as the narration's own sentence at pp. 187-188 ("Avril and the late James Incandenza's was an evolved product…") — voice and novel briefly indistinguishable. The show's one caller observes that the moon never revolves, "never turns its face away"; her reply is dead air, and the night ends with the family's farewell ritual: "Make trouble." / "Do not, under any circumstances, have fun."

What to notice

Joelle enters the novel as pure voice — screened behind jointed chiffon, framed by contractual dead air, the veil itself still only a phrase in the circular she reads — and the scene's craft is all about what a voice can do without a face. Notice the seam where her broadcast bleeds into the book itself: her sound-check line, "Like most marriages, theirs was the evolved product of concordance and compromise", resurfaces pages later, lightly recast, as the narration's own sentence, the novel briefly speaking in its radio host's voice; and the word periodic pops into Mario's head lines before the narration applies it to her music — the signal leaking into its listeners. The U.H.I.D. circular, read inflectionless, is the deformity theme's founding document ("Come don the veil of the type and token."), read a few dozen pages before its reader walks to her own overdose (scene 062, with her street-walks 058/060 between). The structure intercuts a descent through a brain-shaped building with a family supper across the river — the same architect built M.I.T.'s brain and E.T.A.'s cardioid hill, and the broadcast travels from the one to the other. The hour's only dialogue is a caller observing that the moon "never turns its face away", answered with dead air. And Mario is the scene's measuring instrument: "she'd feel a lot better if she listened to her own show, he bets." — the book's least cynical listener attached to its most cynical signal, and hearing the sadness under it.

Beats — page-by-page

  • p. 181-182: "Those Were the Legends That Formerly Were" — students read dad-impressions in silly cartoon voices; tonight's w-voiced legend: a punter's 73-yard long and 8.3-second hang-time "like fucking bombs"; M.I.T.'s carried psychic scars itemized.
  • p. 182-183: The engineer's descent through the Union's anatomical architecture (meatus, sephenoid sinus, Infundibular Recess, the corpus callosum of idle tennis courts); Madame Psychosis behind her cream chiffon triptych, insectile headset, smoking; sound-check fragments — "He liked that sort of dreamy, dreaming music that had the rhythm of long things swinging"; "The Dow that can be told is not the eternal Dow"; "Attractive paraplegic female seeks same; object:" — a personal-ad fragment that pre-echoes the wheelchair material.
  • p. 183-184: The numberless clock-disk "to designate the annularized Great Concavity's No-Time"; five contractual minutes of dead air; the opening incantation ("Look at that fucker Dance"), which Mario, "the least cynical person in the history of Enfield MA," finds terribly compelling "for all its black cynicism." The Union sited "off the corner of Ames and Memorial Dr." (n.60: replacing the neo-Georgian Stratton Center, gutted with C4 in the M.I.T. Language Riots "of twelve years past").
  • p. 184-185: The spinning elliptical aerial spraying signal; only pie-slices escape across the Charles — and the denuded E.T.A. hilltop sits "right in YYY's centrifugal line of fire"; audience demand "inelastic."
  • p. 185: The circular's litany begins — "Obesity. Obesity with hypogonadism. Also morbid obesity. Nodular leprosy with leonine facies… The enuretic, this year of all years." Her hour: no filler, mostly film and film-cartridges (n.61: anticonfluential cinema — "a stubborn and possibly intentionally irritating refusal of different narrative lines to merge into any kind of meaningful confluence," the novel's own self-description — including "the late J. O. Incandenza (middle period)"); thumbs catalogued (poisonous on 8½); one random call per show; "Sometimes she seems very sad."
  • p. 185-186: The U-235 recipe she once had the engineer write out and read on-air between a Baraka poem and a Steelers critique; M.I.T. "in bed with Defense."
  • p. 186-187: The Union as "the late A.Y. ('V.F.') Rickey's summum opus" (p. 186) — the same architect built E.T.A.'s cardioid hilltop (n.3): the book's brain and its heart by one hand. The latex cerebral rooftop, safety-balcony of skull-colored resin; the engineer nests in a sulcus with Fizzy and inhaler; the circular resumes ("Those with saddle-noses. Those with atrophic limbs… Come one come all," p. 187, marker n.62: the 12-step boom — 600 fellowships at the B.S.-mid-90s zenith, a third left by YDAU); it's 22 October (p. 187).
  • p. 187-189: Exposition keyed by her own sound-check line: the Avril/JOI marriage of "concordance and compromise"; E.T.A.'s hard-ass trivium/quadrivium (n.64 — which ends by citing "Dr. A. M. Incandenza's" own updated 3rd-ed. pedagogy text, © YTMP), optics replacing astronomy, the six-term Entertainment Requirement JOI "had to pretty much ram down the throats" of Avril and Schtitt — athletes as "entertainers, albeit of a deep and special sort"; Mario at the HmH Tatsuoka (n.65: E.T.A.s' moniker for the Headmaster's House); Mario's cheerful illiteracy and disenrollment; Avril's howling fantods at any voice "that does not exit a living corporeal head," the doorless HmH, the Green Babies and the no-longer-joke machete.
  • p. 189-190: The U.H.I.D. circular's core read inflectionless: "The hated and dateless and shunned, who keep to the shadows"; "Come don the veil of the type and token"; "It says Progress Not Perfection. It says Never Perfection"; "The Actaeonizing, side by side with the Medusoid… Medusas and odalisques both: Come find common ground" (p. 190 — the circular quoting the poles of JOI's The Medusa v. the Odalisque); "All meeting rooms windowless. That's in ital"; her accent placeless, the voice "sparely modulated and strangely empty, as if she were speaking from inside a small box," "reflective but not judgmental," familiar to Mario "the way certain childhood smells will strike you as familiar and oddly sad."
  • p. 190-191: HmH supper choreography behind the UV-lit plants; a tennis ball by Hal's plate (scene 051's squeeze-drill made furniture); Hal had "disappeared for about half an hour" before supper while Mario waited at his police lock (p. 191) — unremarked covert-use beat; Mario's certainty that she can't hear her own beauty; "one of only two people Mario would love to talk to but would be scared to try"; the word periodic pops into Mario's head eleven lines before the narration applies it to her music — the broadcast leaking into the listener's vocabulary (Carlisle catch; companion to the "concordance and compromise" seam).
  • p. 191-192: Downer-Lit Hour history; her obscure cued musics (n.66) stirring "very early memories of Mario's father" — being carried to bed by a very tall man; supper sociology (Wayne eats like a wild dog, Axford exhorted, Pemulis/Struck get brittle politeness); Avril's tunnel commute bypassing the Pump Room, "which fact Hal obviously endorses" (p. 191).
  • p. 192: The one caller, cultured stutter: the moon "never turns its face away" — revolving and yet not; her sign-off is more dead air.
  • p. 192-193: The engineer's memory of the adored-because-indifferent types in high school; hell-Jell-O dessert; the post-prandial ritual — Hal whumps his gloves: "Make trouble." Avril, mock-stern: "Do not, under any circumstances, have fun," which Mario still finds clutch-your-stomach funny.

Themes in this scene

  • Film and Optics: Madame Psychosis is the book's resident film theorist (n.61 ties her canon to JOI's middle period); E.T.A.'s curriculum literally converts oratory into entertainment-studies using JOI's lenses and labs.
  • Disability and Deformity: the U.H.I.D. circular is the theme's founding document — concealment reframed as fellowship, "the veil of the type and token," shortly before Joelle walks to her own attempted suicide (scene 062).
  • Family and Hamlet: the HmH anatomized — Avril's phobias, the doorless house, the ritualized farewell; the marriage "of concordance and compromise" rendered in curriculum design.
  • Annularity: the numberless No-Time disk, the engineer's cold-fusion annulation equations, and the unrevolving moon — circles that hide their own motion.
  • Communication and Solipsism: Mario adores a voice that can't hear itself; Avril can't bear disembodied voices; the show's only dialogue is answered with dead air.
  • Entertainment and the Self: audience demand "inelastic," tuners aligning "like plants toward light they can't even see," the adored-because-indifferent broadcaster — passive spectation in miniature; and E.T.A.'s Entertainment Requirement defines its athletes as "entertainers, albeit of a deep and special sort" from inside the curriculum.
  • Memory and Forgetting: her cued musics stir "very early memories of Mario's father" — being carried to bed by a very tall man (pp. 191-192) — recall arriving as sensation before identification, her voice familiar "the way certain childhood smells will strike you as familiar and oddly sad" (p. 190); the engineer, too, can read her magnetism only through a high-school memory (p. 193).
  • Time and Perception: the studio's clock-architecture as experienced — four different-Zone clocks over the screen plus the numberless disk hung "to designate the annularized Great Concavity's No-Time," the E.S.T. clock's hand carving the last seconds off five contractual minutes of dead air (pp. 183-184); Mario receives her music as "the rhythm of long things swinging," the word periodic surfacing in him before the narration applies it.

Connections — backward & forward

Backward

  • "Madame Psychosis" is also DMZ's street name (scene 050, p. 170) — the three meanings (drug, voice, the Entertainment's veiled star) are now all live.
  • A. Y. Rickey built both this brain-shaped Union and E.T.A.'s cardioid hill (n.3) — the broadcast travels from the book's brain to its heart, with the Lung between them (Carlisle's shared-architect point).
  • Hal's unexplained half-hour disappearance before supper, plus his endorsing Avril's Pump-Room-bypassing tunnel, quietly extend scene 013's secrecy apparatus into the family evening.
  • E.T.A.'s Entertainment Requirement ("entertainers, albeit of a deep and special sort") states the spectation thesis Steeply and Marathe argue all night (scenes 029/035) from inside the curriculum.

Forward

  • The sound-check line "Like most marriages..." (p. 183) becomes the narration's own opening at p. 187-188 — her broadcast voice bleeding into the novel's; the book performing its radio-host.
  • The moon caller (p. 192) is the proximate trigger of Joelle's resolve: scene 058 (p. 222) replays "that caller and the moon, saying the moon never looked away" as she decides to stop turning her face away.
  • The U.H.I.D. material pays off in scene 060's Churchill founding-legend and membership card (p. 226) and in Joelle's veiled Ennet House life (pp. 534-538); "The Actaeonizing, side by side with the Medusoid" deploys both U.H.I.D.'s Actaeon Complex (fear of transhuman beauty, p. 290) and the lethal/petrifying-vision dyad of JOI's The Medusa v. the Odalisque (n.24 p. 988; mythologized by Marathe and Steeply pp. 528-530, scene 103; actually screened at p. 687, scene 132, and described pp. 396-397, scene 085) — the circular speaks the filmography's language. Carlisle adds the pun-gloss U.H.I.D. = "you hid."
  • The punter-legend opener is almost certainly Orin-shaped (the book's one record-setting punter, scenes 012/021; his B.U. punting career and Joelle history detailed scene 068, pp. 283-299) — a dad-voice apotheosis of the Incandenza who fled the family, patricide-comedy aimed back at this family; the same punts Pemulis mocks in n.110 ("swing one leg up and down over and over for seven-plus figures," p. 1019).
  • The voice "as if she were speaking from inside a small box" pre-links Joelle to the cage/Bottom idiom of her later arc (Carlisle's "(a cage?)" gloss — an inference, not stated).
  • Mario's faith in her show recurs when the show goes on hiatus and he walks down the hill looking for the voice (pp. 589-593, scene 117); the "very tall man" carrying boys to bed returns as the wraith's height jokes (Gately).

Notable passages (10)

  • p. 184: "And Lo, for the Earth was empty of form, and void.... Look at that fucker Dance." — her nightly Genesis-parody invocation; irony and compulsion fused.
  • p. 183: "Attractive paraplegic female seeks same; object:" — sound-check fragment; the wheelchair motif surfacing in her mouth, unfinished.
  • p. 185: "Obesity. Obesity with hypogonadism. Also morbid obesity. Nodular leprosy with leonine facies." — the litany's first burst, the disability-deformity ur-text.
  • p. 183 → pp. 187-188: "Like most marriages, theirs was the evolved product of concordance and compromise" (sound-check) become, lightly recast, the narration's own "Avril and the late James Incandenza's was an evolved product of concordance and compromise" — structural seam worth quoting.
  • p. 190: "Come don the veil of the type and token. Come learn to love what's hidden inside." — U.H.I.D.'s creed; disability-deformity master-pull.
  • p. 190: "The Actaeonizing, side by side with the Medusoid… Medusas and odalisques both: Come find common ground. All meeting rooms windowless. That's in ital." — the circular meeting JOI's filmography head-on.
  • p. 191: "she'd feel a lot better if she listened to her own show, he bets." — Mario's whole ethic in one clause.
  • p. 192: "You are welcome regardless of severity. Severity is in the eye of the sufferer, it says. Pain is pain… A bad-hair year." — the circular's democratic close, bathos included.
  • p. 192: "That it never turns its face away." — the moon line that saves/redirects Joelle; annularity + ghost-logic.
  • p. 193: "certain types in high school whom everyone adored because you sensed it made no difference to them whether you adored them." — the engineer on her magnetism; entertainment-self in a memory.
