Clocks & datelines

This is the narrow, formal counterpart to the theme of lived time: clock-faces and clock-pulses experienced as literal image and architecture, the machinery of the novel's subsidized datelines made visible. The clearest instances are structural — a "clock-pulse serial" organizing the attaché's evening (pp. 54-55), a four-clocks headnote whose simultaneity is rendered as clock-architecture, and the four Zone clocks paired with a numberless "No-Time" disk (pp. 183-186). A single dream-image, the clock frozen at 1830 in Lenz's recurring nightmare, shows the device bleeding into the psychological. This is a deliberately thin, formal motif: the subjective sense of time passing is handled elsewhere (the time-perception theme), and this entry holds only the clock-as-object material.
