Michael Pemulis
Michael Pemulis — "Mike," "the Peemster" — is E.T.A.'s working-class Allston scholarship boy and its resident operator: pharmacologist, bookmaker, urine-test fixer, math prodigy, and architect-emeritus of the academy's nuclear-war game Eschaton. Loud, needling, and fiercely loyal to Hal (the only person Hal has ever actually gotten high with), he runs an eleven-years-standing drug-and-clean-urine business from beneath his white yachting cap. Across the novel's central November fortnight he lands the near-mythic hallucinogen DMZ from the Antitoi brothers, presides over the Interdependence-Day Eschaton debacle, buys his way out of a surprise drug test with leverage he holds over Avril, and is finally expelled when a batch of his stimulants accidentally doses the academy's top player, John Wayne, mid-broadcast.
Pemulis is shown almost entirely in the present tense, scene by scene, with no confessional layer. His DMZ thread — the drug's chemistry, storage, and who could reach it — is laid out in full and resolved nowhere: on the last day it vanishes from a hiding place only he was supposed to know, leaving open the book's quiet question of whether, and with what, Hal was dosed.

Pemulis is the system's one true materialist, and the book gives him the only creed in it that never wavers: "Todder, you can trust math… Whose truth is deductive truth. Independent of sense or emotionality" (9). Everything he builds is that creed applied — the odds-software on the Clipperton wagering (5), the EndStat decision-algorithms under Eschaton (4), the urine business run like actuarial science (10), the entrapment protocol, the cayenne packets, the recursively self-cancelling answering machine (7, 13). Where every other E.T.A. mind is haunted (Hal by Himself, Schtitt by infinity-as-metaphysics), Pemulis is the boy from the Allston cot (1) who decided early that the only father that never comes through the door at night is first-order predicate logic. His one public fury makes the same point: the Eschaton debacle (15) is the materialist defending the map/territory axiom — "Players aren't inside the goddamn game. Players are part of the apparatus" — against children who let the real snow in. He is right, and it destroys him anyway: the debacle summons the urologist (17), the urologist forces the leverage play (16, 18), and the leverage play spends the one card that might later have saved him (20).
The DMZ chain is this account's reason for being: acquisition and storage (13, both loci — cap-lining and the Subdorm-B entrepôt), the reprieve that buys the 11/20-21 window (18), the detectability research and the lobbying of Hal (19), the failed warning (21), the breached ceiling and the vanished sneaker (22), and the expelled boy lurking by the dumpsters (23). This chain is well-corroborated within the text — which suggests that what the text does not give (who took it, where it went, whether any of it reached Hal) is a built-in absence, not an oversight. The expulsion arc is the materialist's checkmate by things math can't price. The Wayne dosing is "a total accident and in no way Pemulis's deal" (20), and it expels him anyway, because clearing himself would mean confessing the 'drines he took for the WhataBurger stakes — a trip his never-higher-than-128 rank made improbable all along (Dating notes). Avril, whose office tableau he'd cashed (16, 18), returns the check with rubberized doorknobs and a blessing shaped like a curse (20). And the last attested days are pure dangling signal: the two weeks of "suspiciously generous" free math poured into Hal, then the avoidance "as if he sensed something," then the sprung entrepôt, then a boy "anxiously depressed" by the dumpsters (22, 23). The reader is invited to compute; the text withholds the final term. For once in Pemulis's life the variables don't close — which is, for the book's one true materialist, the exactly calibrated punishment.

- Pemulis's U.S.T.A. rank / the WhataBurger stakes (13-20): "Pemulis's U.S.T.A. rank, excepting his halcyon thirteenth year in the Year of the Perdue Wonderchicken, has never gotten higher than 128" (scene 057, p. 0219) — so the trip to Tucson he keeps invoking as the thing he most stands to lose is never actually assured; deLint's assessment is that Pemulis in a real match is like an e-mail crush who turns out to have "just one enormous tit in the exact middle of her chest" (scene 057, n77). Recorded, not resolved.
- Event 1 (family/childhood, and the "Micky" identification): Michael's exact childhood age is unstamped; scene 131 is Matty's POV and dates only Matty's timeline ("Da'd come over… in 1989," "Matty'd been three or four"; the Da dead "when Matty was seventeen"). Michael ("Mickey"/"Micky") is placed as the younger of the two boys, ~five in the earliest abuse memories — but the equation Micky = Michael is an INFERENCE (Michael is never named in 131; the identification rests on inference alone). - Event 13 (DMZ quantity/potency): "650 mg." = "thirteen incredibly potent 50-mg. artifacts" (scene 057, p. 0216) — internally consistent (13 × 50 = 650). The DMZ is dated to "the tail-end of the B.S. 1960s" as a discovery and "the B.S. 1970s" as the artifacts' vintage (scenes 050, 057) — both authorial, as printed.
- Event 18 (why the reprieve): the "fine instrument"/brass-performance account (scene 155, Hal's telling) and the Avril-blackmail account (n324, narration; scene 172, Pemulis's hint "Blarney wasn't why we got it") are not reconciled in-range. Both carried; this is a genuine open dispute, not a mere date puzzle.
- Event 20 (culpability for the Wayne dosing): the narration states the dosing "had been a total accident and in no way Pemulis's deal, if anybody's Troeltsch's" (n332, p. 1074) — yet Pemulis is expelled for it, unable to clear himself without self-incrimination. The gap between fact and outcome is flagged, not resolved.
- Event 22 (the vanished DMZ): the cause of the fallen ceiling panels and the destination of the DMZ-sneaker are left entirely unexplained in the text (scene 174).
