Mario Incandenza
Mario Incandenza is the middle Incandenza son: born severely challenged after a hidden, premature pregnancy, homodontic and macrocephalic, unable to feel physical pain, and moving through the world on a police-lock brace and a head-mounted camera. He is the one son his filmmaker father could actually be with — the "lens" half of their optical partnership — and after JOI's suicide he becomes the keeper of the family's memory, remaking his father's films and asking, patiently, the questions no one else in the family will. His near-total inability to lie or to manage cynicism makes him the person everyone at E.T.A. confides in: the family's and the academy's fixed, trusted listener.
His two quiet quests — his devotion to the radio voice "Madame Psychosis" and his midnight walk to a halfway house "where the people cry in front of each other" — point the same way, toward unperformed feeling. Where the book gives conflicting versions of an event, both are kept rather than reconciled.

Mario Incandenza's timeline opens as a dossier, not a childhood: the staircase birth (2) and its sequelae (4–10) assemble a body at catastrophic cost — and that body buys him out of every economy the rest of the novel bleeds in. He cannot feel pain (10), cannot compete (55; his competitive strokes rerouted into the Visine-bottle game, 54), cannot use substances ("he just wouldn't get it," 55), cannot detect a lie (114), and cannot manage cynicism (84–85: disenrolled for cheerfully declining to read, he'd "way rather listen and watch"). What reaches his brothers as curse — the talent-expectation transmission belt his own Feral Prodigy narrates (93), the dipsomania — reaches Mario as apparatus instead: the willed head-mount Bolex (46), the father's editing rooms and matte-panel (52–53), the parodic forms (88–89). Over the whole dossier hangs the paternity shadow (3, with 64 and 79–80), which the timeline's discipline keeps as insinuation-recorded-as-insinuation — one of the book's open cruxes, not a chronology fact.
The father line is the arc's spine. Of the three sons Mario is the one Himself could actually be with (22–23), and the intimacy is always optical: Mario is the lens half of the operation outright — "Leith was cameras, the son was lenses" (26) — mirroring the director's hand-frame at the glass door as a toddler (20), standing by at the weight-room confessions (32), keeping the Found Drama secret (33). JOI's hardest delegations all go to him: admitting, witnessing, and cleaning up after Clipperton (38–40), and the final underground month (45). After 1 April YTSDB the transmission completes: Mario alone "talks about him. About it" (99), keeps the family archive ex officio (95), remakes the father's own ONANtiad funnier than the original (88), wins a contest working in his forms (93), and is halfway into a Hamlet-based project (94) — the book's own scaffolding handed to the one son who can hold it without damage. Where Hal cannot summon "one shadowy idea" of the father's interior, Mario's standing argument with Hal is about exactly that interior (125).
The listener arc is the deformity arc inverted: the same damage that blocks pain admits everyone else's. Bullshit drops away around damaged listeners (57), so Schtitt confides in him, Lyle refers the self-conscious out to him (60–61), the academy routes its "psychic slack" through him (62), and he reads even C.T. with working charity (65). The November nights complete the line: the sadness question put to Avril with the Bolex switched off (108), "You seem sad" held patiently across three scenes (108, 115, 124), Hal's full confession (115), and the thesis sentence — "I think you just did it. What you should do" (116) — the novel's communication crux answered in nine words by its least-equipped speaker. The mechanism is stated in 114: deception never crosses his mind, so whatever is said to him "becomes sort of true in transit" — total credulity operating as the book's one reliably working grace.
His two YDAU quests point the same direction and name the arc's value. The Madame Psychosis devotion (83–84) turns to agitation at precisely the moment he learns the voice was screened (98), and to a tape-hunt "until the return" (113); the insomniac night walk ends at Ennet House because there "the people cry in front of each other" (111). Both are one hunger — for unperformed feeling — and the timeline's last beats leave its bearer unchanged inside a collapsing household: asleep "as if awaiting a lily" in the blizzard (118), asking Hal once more if he is sad (124). "Mario never changes" (112) is not stasis but instrumentation: he is the family's fixed reference point, and the failure of his preverbal Hal-sense (112) registers Hal's YDAU disintegration earlier than any other instrument the novel owns.
Open questions the synthesis inherits from the Dating notes: the thirteenth-Xmas off-by-one (2, 46); "Eighteen in May" (49); the eight-year-old-in-late-U.S.T. Clipperton clash (36–40); the Loach-saga film match (63); and the paternity strands (3) — an open question this chronology only records; the competing readings are catalogued among the archive's theories.
Timeline (125 events)
Key to the timeline
Events are ordered by when they happen in the story, not by where they fall in the book's pages.
★ marks a pivotal event — one that carries this character's arc. Unmarked events add texture around it.
Where an event says how it is known, that basis is one of: narrated (the narration states it), recalled (a character's own memory), reported (secondhand or testimony), claimed (asserted by someone with a stake), or disputed (conflicting versions). Conflicting details are quoted as the book has them rather than resolved.
Dating notes (apparatus)
Consolidated unresolved date/identity puzzles; event numbers are this page's own numbering; as printed throughout.
- Birth year / "thirteenth Xmas" (2, 46). The archive's dating ruling puts Mario's birth ~25 Nov B.S. 1990 (19 on 25 Nov YDAU; scene 071's recorded birth year corrected 1991 -> 1990). But scene 071 dates the willed Bolex to "Xmas of the Year of the Trial-Size Dove Bar" (YTSDB/2004) AND calls it "Mario's thirteenth Xmas" — a 1990 birth makes the thirteenth Xmas Dec 2003 (YTMP), one year off. Both stamps cited as written; the off-by-one is internal to the text.
- "Eighteen in May" (49). Scene 015 (and 026) call Mario "Eighteen in May," which conflicts with the ~25-Nov-1990 birth ruling (per which he is nineteen on 25 Nov YDAU). Read as "eighteen years old as of May YDAU" where possible; as printed and defer to the ruling.
- Clipperton age vs. era (36-40). Scene 086 calls Mario "eight-year-old" befriending Clipperton "in the very last couple years of solar, Unsubsidized Time," but Clipperton's death (scene 089) is dated YW/2002, when a 1990-born Mario would be ~11-12. The "eight-year-old" and "first of his life's two funerals" both cited as written; the age/era gap is authorial.
- Loach handshake — datability (63). The text says Mario was "alone and only fourteen" (~YTSDB-YPW, 2004-05 under the birth ruling), but the film he is fetching tokens for — actors as God and the Devil playing poker with Tarot cards for the soul of Cosgrove Watt — most closely matches Pre-Nuptial Agreement of Heaven and Hell in the n024 filmography, which is dated "B.S." and whose stated subject is an "alcoholic sandwich-bag salesman," not Watt. So the film cross-reference is a loose/possibly-different match, and a B.S. film clashes with a Subsidized-time age-14. Left undated, with an age-14 best-guess.
- Paternity (2, 3, 64, 79). Two strands, neither asserting paternity: scene 071's narrated insinuation (hidden pregnancy, C.T.'s spring visit, "possible half-uncle," Mario's deference "for Tavis's sake") and scene 170's report that Orin "decocted the Mrs.-Tavis / C.T.-parentage story from a distraught C.T." in the birth-wait — Orin being flagged unreliable ("Pinpoint accuracy had never been Orin's forte"). Event 79 adds the neutral genealogical note that Mario "doesn't seem to resemble much of anyone." NOT marked disputed (insinuation vs. silence, no competing verbatim account); carried as printed. This is the paternity thread's most consequential open question.
- "The son was lenses" (26). From scene 178 (Joelle to Steeply); reported (Joelle), verbatim against the print text.
- "Bertraund" is not a Mario alias. The only "Bertraund" in the book is Bertraund Antitoi, the Antitoi brother (scenes 057, 133), a Québecer definitively not Mario. Only "Booboo" (Orin's, per 064) is a confirmed Mario alias.
- "Unviewable" Masters buried with JOI (48). n.160 lists Mario's knowledge as "perhaps Mario" — his inclusion is explicitly uncertain in the text; carried reported with the hedge.
- WhataBurger trip (100). Scene 057 (5 Nov) has the trip conditional ("if Avril can convince C.T."); scene 065 (6 Nov) states it authorized. Both attestations noted in the entry.
- Print typo preserved. The print text for scene 048 reads "reconfigururing matte-panel" (sic); the quote in event 53 preserves it verbatim.
- Pre-YDAU block ordering is best-guess (22-44). JOI's filmmaking years, the Clipperton sub-arc (YW/2002), the 2001 pre-Subsidized Thanksgiving (41), the ~2000 Orin-quit age anchor (42), and the ~1999 E.T.A. founding (43) are grouped thematically (filmmaking relationship, then Clipperton, then founding/rooming) rather than strictly by year; several are undated and the datable ones span B.S. 1998-YTSDB. Within-block order is an editorial best-guess; the firmly-dated YDAU sequence (96-125) is in date order.
