Orin Incandenza
Orin Incandenza is the eldest of the three Incandenza sons: a burned-out junior tennis prodigy who defected to college football over a baton-twirler — Joelle van Dyne, the P.G.O.A.T. — and became a professional punter for the Phoenix Cardinals. He is the book's compulsive escaper, and his one true gift is escape made literal: a ball kicked so high it leaves the field's whole system of return behind. He punts women the same way — his adult life is a repetition-compulsion of ritualized seductions of numbered "Subjects," a hollow rerun of the one real bond, with Joelle, that he felt once and never recovered from. Under it all is his engulfing, unresolved bond with his mother Avril and his total estrangement from his father, whose microwave suicide he skipped and refused to discuss for two years.
Orin never gets a sustained point of view of his own; his story is assembled from his brothers' memories, Joelle's side of the romance, his own dawn phone calls to Hal, and interview correspondence — sources the book repeatedly flags as unreliable, Orin's included. Two things it deliberately leaves open are left open here: whether Orin mailed the lethal Entertainment to his father's enemies, and his ultimate fate after his capture by the Wheelchair Assassins.

Arc
Orin is the book's compulsive escaper, and the timeline's cruelest joke is that his one genuine gift is escape made literal: a ball kicked so high and so well that it leaves the field's whole system of return behind. The defection (11) is a flight twice over — from a tennis career that had already fled him (7) and toward a girl he could watch from a distance — and the text is careful to say the kick itself was "unengineered," the only unstrategized act of his adult life besides falling for her. Schtitt's diagnosis stands over everything: punting merely "legitimate[d] the same dependency on the one shot of lob" (11) — one great upward gesture, repeated, in place of a complete game. The same shape governs his adult erotic life: the Subjects (26), the numbered Strategies (27), the chart-and-journal left "just pleading to be read" — a repetition-compulsion the narration decodes exactly once, inside the trap itself: the "obliterating trinity of You and I into We" was felt once, with Joelle, "and has never recovered, and will never again" (19). He punts women the way he punts balls: long, high, well, and always away.
What he is escaping is the family, and the timeline's mother-son lattice (1, 4, 6, 9, 16, 31, 32, 37) records the engulfment without resolving it: born as "at least partly a legal maneuver" (1), raised inside Avril's high-watt love until he stood over the usurping infant with a Quaker-Oats box (4), lying pathologically to a mother who answered every exploded lie with more love (6, 9), unable to speak to his father at all "without his mother's presence and mediation" (13, 16). The nightmare of Avril's head strapped to his face (25) and the "monstrous practical joke" verdict (31) are the same datum from inside and outside. And because Orin is the family's sole source for so much of its own murk (37) — a man Bain says regards truth "as constructed instead of reported" (32) — nearly every parentage-adjacent fact in this account arrives pre-impeached; the Basis tags carry that load, and the lattice resolves nothing.
The two cruxes stay open because the book built them open. On the mailer question: the evidence is proximity and shape — Steeply cultivates him (30), the samizdat question is routed through him (35), the A.F.R. deduce a "relative, an athlete" (35) — but no scene shows Orin mailing anything; this archive's Orin-mailer adjudication weighs the question and finds it undecidable by design, and this page records evidence only. On the fate: the last attestation is the inverted tumbler (36), his own roach-ritual (25) turned against him with a precision that implies the A.F.R. have been reading him the way he reads Subjects — the hand-model worked because she inverted his pattern (34, n307), the tumbler works because it inverts his hygiene. Whether he breaks, and what "Do it to her!" chooses, the novel does not say. The arc's last legible gesture is the oldest one: trapped at the bottom of his own escape trajectory, air running out, Orin opts to call it a dream — flight one more time, this time from the fact of the glass.
Timeline (37 events)
Key to the timeline
Events are ordered by when they happen in the story, not by where they fall in the book's pages.
★ marks a pivotal event — one that carries this character's arc. Unmarked events add texture around it.
Where an event says how it is known, that basis is one of: narrated (the narration states it), recalled (a character's own memory), reported (secondhand or testimony), claimed (asserted by someone with a stake), or disputed (conflicting versions). Conflicting details are quoted as the book has them rather than resolved.
Dating notes (apparatus)
Consolidated unresolved date/identity puzzles; as printed throughout.
- Event 12 (co-op location): scene 068 places Orin and Joelle's cohabitation in "an East Cambridge co-op three subway stops distant from B.U." (p. 0296), whereas scenes 062 (p. 0227), 150 (pp. 0736-0737), and 179 (p. 0944) all describe a Back Bay brownstone co-op "provided nearly gratis by Jim." Joelle also processes her walk toward it as "the cooperative Back Bay–edge brownstone she had lived in once with Orin" (062). Unreconciled — possibly two descriptions of one address (East Cambridge / Back Bay fringe are adjacent in the text's geography), cite both.
- Events 10-14 (freshman-year dating) — HEADER OVERRIDE, flag loud: the whole B.U. sequence is dated by the freshman-year New Year's Eve = "the last P.M. Before Subsidization" = 31 Dec B.S. 2001 (scene 068, p. 0296), so freshman fall = B.S. 2001 and the defection is "the third week of his freshman year" (p. 0288). This is the the Joelle timeline event-6 chain; not independently re-derived here. Scene 068's own header reads "date: 2000 - YTMP, YTSDB - YDPAH" (header string re-verified against the source text): this chronology overrides the header's 2000 start in favor of the internal chain, per the archive's rule that the in-text chain is authoritative over the header hedge. The override is deliberate and flagged here.
- Event 1 vs. Orin's stated age: Orin gives his age as "twenty-six" to the "survey"-man (scene 119, p. 0598) in Nov YDAU (2009), implying birth ~1983; a B.U. freshman at ~18 in B.S. 2001 is consistent. No hard clash, noted for the index.
- Event 22 (silence duration): Orin's estrangement is quantified twice in scene 064 — JOI's death was "four years 216 days" past (p. 0250), "with two years of that not even once even calling" (p. 0247). Consistent internally; anchored to the archive's 1-Apr-YTSDB suicide ruling.
- Event 23 (JOI's sobriety timeline): Orin (relaying Joelle) says JOI "quit drinking in January" YTSDB and "hadn't had a drop in weeks" (scene 064, p. 0250); Hal counters that by the end "it was hard to tell whether he'd been ingesting anything or not," and a half-full Wild Turkey bottle sat by the oven. Disputed, cite both.
- Event 20 (the separation's trigger): four accounts that do not reconcile — Joelle's "wouldn't even face up to why / jealous fantasy" (166), Notkin's "the boot within months of the traumatic deformity" under the enmeshment accusation (159, triple hearsay; the only account that dates the split, hanging it off the 24 Nov YTMP acid-throwing), Bain's "James… asked her to perform… they supposedly became close" (n269), and Hal's "after… had been disfigured" (122). The deformity itself is disputed elsewhere in the Joelle record (the U.H.I.D. ruin-or-perfection enigma). Left open per the fate/identity rule.
- Event 12 (who approached whom): scene 068's narration has Joelle approaching Orin at the Columbus Day function, but n307 states flatly that "Joelle van Dyne and Orin Incandenza each remember themselves as the original approachee," and that Orin has perceived himself as approachee only twice ever — Joelle and the "Swiss hand-model" (34). Cite both as written.
- Event 24 (team-of-record, #71 on both): New Orleans Saints as of YWQMD (the "Jethro Bodine" form-reply archived under Avril's 20 June YWQMD letter, n110 p. 1006) vs. Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals by Oct YDAU (the trade, scene 012). Reconcilable as career progression (Saints earlier → Cardinals by YDAU); he wears #71 with both. Flag, not resolve.
- Events 21/37 (triple Volvo-window motif): three variant window-signs of Avril's infidelity, all Orin-sourced or Orin-adjacent — Bain's "word" on the fogged window that "cast a conjugal pall" (n269, via an intimate of Orin's), the smeared nude footprints on the inside of the windshield Orin alleged in YTMP (170), and the name idly written in the window's steam that reappeared as JOI drove to film Joelle (n080, Joelle's relayed account; Orin "would not say who or whether he knew who"). Possibly one incident refracted three ways, possibly three; the text never reconciles them. Cite each as written.
- The mailer crux (35): the novel never shows Orin mailing the Entertainment. The in-range evidence is circumstantial: Steeply cultivating Orin (30); the "samizdat"/JOI-name question routed through Orin (35); and the A.F.R.'s deduction that DuPlessis "received his original copies from this relative, an athlete" (scene 145, p. 0723). Recorded as open — the question is examined at length in this archive's adjudication of the Orin-mailer question; the novel gives evidence, not an answer.
- Event 36 (fate): the tumbler "technical interview" (scene 184) is the last attestation on this timeline; whether Orin dies, breaks, or reveals the grave's location is never shown. Left open. Orin's fate is weighed in the same Orin-mailer adjudication in this archive.
