She almost reminds the engineer of certain types in high school whom everyone adored because you sensed it made no difference to them whether you adored them. It had sure made a difference to the engineer, though, who hadn’t been invited to even one graduation party, with his inhaler and skin.
Context
The engineer's high-school wound, surfacing unbidden as he descends from the rooftop: her sign-off dead air "almost reminds" him — associative memory working on a stranger — and the reminder opens straight onto the old uninvited-to-graduation hurt, still precise down to the inhaler and skin. The broadcast as a machine for triggering other people's memories.
