Avril's bedroom and her half-brother C.T.'s are on the same floor of the Headmaster's House, "right next to each other," with only Avril's private study — its door bearing "a big color Xerox of M. Hamilton as Oz's West Witch" — between. The dead king's house now sleeps the widow and the successor-brother in adjacent rooms, the exact spatial fact the Hamlet frame turns on, delivered here with the studied casualness of "as a matter of fact." The narration doesn't editorialize; it just tells you where everyone sleeps, and the where does all the work. (The witch on the study door is the family's own wry gloss on how the household reads its mother.) The proximity that later scenes will make explicit as the brisk replacement beside the master bedroom is already just there in the architecture, waiting to be noticed.
