Joelle van Dyne
Joelle van Dyne is the "Prettiest Girl Of All Time" (P.G.O.A.T.) — a Kentucky-raised radio host known on air as "Madame Psychosis," Orin Incandenza's former lover, and James O. Incandenza's veiled muse and final-film performer. Her beauty works from the start like a disfigurement, isolating her, and each of her three great attachments turns her into something to be looked at: Orin loves her on film and through a stadium's roar, JOI uses her compulsively as his "optical beloved," and the Union of the Hideously and Improbably Deformed teaches her to "hide openly" behind a veil. After a freebase-cocaine overdose she means as a suicide, she lands in the Ennet House halfway facility and begins, haltingly, to recover.
The novel keeps her most contested fact unsettled — whether the acid thrown one Thanksgiving left her hideously disfigured or unbearably beautiful — and where its accounts of her split, both are quoted side by side rather than resolved.

Arc
Joelle van Dyne's arc is a recovery shape run through the book's most contested body. A Kentucky childhood organized around a father's "pure" too-much love (1–5) produces the P.G.O.A.T., whose beauty functions from the start as disfigurement — she is shunned for it (6) years before any acid flies. Each of her three defining relationships converts her into an optical object: Orin loves her on film and through a crowd's roar (6–17); JOI makes her his "optical beloved," first refusing to use her as too-pretty, then using her compulsively, ending with the terminal cartridge whose whole content — on either disputed account (28) — is her face bent over a lens apologizing; and the U.H.I.D. (41) institutionalizes the conversion: "hide openly," the veil as Type and Symbol. The acid Thanksgiving (23–24) sits at the hinge and the text will not certify it: every downstream attestation of her face splits (70's "deformed with beauty" vs 71's "disfigured" vs 100's "I hid by hiddenness"), and the timeline records the dispute rather than resolving it — the veil question belongs to the book's open cruxes, not to the chronology.
The addiction line runs strictly parallel: recreational and "free" (10–11), ritualized (12), freebase onset timed against JOI's death (30), and terminal by design on 7 Nov YDAU — the walk (57), the party in the same brownstone where both men filmed and loved her (59), and Too Much Fun (60), a suicide staged as the exact inverse of her radio persona: the woman who is only a voice arranging to become only a body. The moon-caller (48/50) supplies the recovery arc's stated mechanism weeks in advance — the moon that never turns its face away — and Ennet House (62 on) pays it off: the subjunctive demolition (63), the U.H.I.D. doctrine speech (70), the Knievel breakthrough (91, one endless day instead of an impossible arc of counted days), and the resolve, keyed to Gately's ruin, to stay straight "no matter what it means facing" and possibly to show somebody the face (84).
The thriller layer treats her exactly as the book's other systems do — as a lens to be acquired: the A.F.R. wants her as access to the Master (67, 77, 81, 97), U.S.O.U.S. wants her testimony (98–99), Marathe sells her to both (85–86), and her answer is the arc's quiet culmination (101): released as bait, she goes home — to the halfway house — and spends her freedom warning Pat about wheelchairs. Her last attestations are a veil in the back row of a meeting (103): the persona dissolved into "a voice among other voices," which is what she told Gately the veil was for all along.
Open questions the synthesis inherits from the Dating notes: the veil/U.H.I.D. chronology gap (events 26 vs 41); the 26/21-month spans' absolute anchors (22); the mother/stepmother strand (1 vs 24 vs 72); and the final-cartridge content dispute (28), which belongs to the entertainment-contents crux and is only recorded here.
Timeline (103 events)
Key to the timeline
Events are ordered by when they happen in the story, not by where they fall in the book's pages.
★ marks a pivotal event — one that carries this character's arc. Unmarked events add texture around it.
Where an event says how it is known, that basis is one of: narrated (the narration states it), recalled (a character's own memory), reported (secondhand or testimony), claimed (asserted by someone with a stake), or disputed (conflicting versions). Conflicting details are quoted as the book has them rather than resolved.
Dating notes (apparatus)
Consolidated unresolved date/identity puzzles; event numbers are this page's own numbering; as printed throughout.
Dating puzzles carried from entries
- Event 33: "four years seven months six days past" (p. 225) lands day-exactly on a 1 April from 7 Nov but implies the wrong year-count (should be 5y7m6d under the 1-Apr-YTSDB ruling) — known internal inconsistency, as printed.
- Event 22: the 26-month (Orin) and 21-month ("optical beloved") spans have no absolute anchors in-range beyond ending by/near JOI's death (cf. scene 068 and the event-6 chain).
- Event 30: "five years back, before Incandenza's death" (p. 237) — arithmetic loose (five years back from Nov YDAU lands late 2004, after the 1 Apr death) — minor puzzle, as printed.
- Event 19: two n.24 year-entries carry archival "(?)"; The Night Wears a Sombrero "listed by some archivists as completed the preceding year, Y.W."; and the scene-139 Low-Temperature Civics first-appearance aside sits in as printed tension with Hal's tying of L-TC's germ to JOI's "dark B.S. '80s" (scene 138, p. 706).
- Event 20: the Infinite Jest (IV) "'Madame Psychosis'(?)" credit is itself queried in n.24 — as printed.
- Event 32: Infinite Jest (V?) filed YTSDB; some archivists file it under YTMP as completion of IJ(IV) — archival puzzle.
- Event 47: the 22 Oct YDAU show's hour technically straddles into 23 Oct (Carlisle refinement; cite text as written); cf. event 51's hiatus clock.
- Event 51: the archive's dating ruling — the Madame Psychosis hiatus tracks her last WYYY show, 23 Oct YDAU, not the 7-8 Nov OD (scene 117's "third week" fits 11 Nov exactly); scene 121 calls it a "'leave of medical absence'... since ~8 Nov YDAU" (p. 624) — as printed alongside the ruling.
- Event 62: n.134 "entered the House just today, 11/8" vs. main text p. 364 "showed up two days ago right after supper" — internal inconsistency, as printed; the archive's ruling: 8 Nov stands.
- Event 5: Joelle's "six summers running" at baton camp (p. 536) vs. scene 068's "declined a sixth summer at the Dixie Baton-Twirling Institute in Oxford MS" (p. 297) — five attended, sixth declined; either she inflates the count to Gately or it is an authorial slip.
- Event 72: "up here ten years" (p. 563) puts her Boston arrival ~B.S. 1999, two years before Orin's freshman-fall 2001 sighting of her — consistent only if she preceded him at B.U.; noted as a dating datum.
- Events 41 vs. 26: veil-chronology tension — she is already veiled on JOI's late shoots (pre-Apr YTSDB 2004) yet "almost four years in" U.H.I.D. as of Nov YDAU (~2005-06 joining); and roughly two years lie between the Notkin-alleged acid Thanksgiving (24 Nov YTMP) and the veil, with no text bridging the gap in-range. Kept as printed; possibly veil-use predates formal U.H.I.D. membership, or the count is another of the text's short-count patterns (cf. scene 064's one-year-short intervals).
- Event 74: scene 117's internal "third week"/birthday-countdown tension is cited as written; the 11 Nov dateline stands.
- Event 77: the engineer abduction — "probably 12 Nov" per Carlisle (scene 121) vs. scene 147's catalog c. 12-14 Nov and internal "day of Fortier's return" c. 14 Nov; the archive's rulings record the tightenings as compatible — both carried in the entry.
- Event 23: explicit in-text 24 Nov YTMP Thanksgiving; Carlisle's calendar catch recorded in the archive's rulings — real 2003 Thanksgiving fell 27 Nov; authorial, as printed.
- Event 9: Hal "maybe ten" at the Nov 2001 dinner (p. 745) strains the Hal-17-in-YDAU chronology — authorial, cited as written.
- Events 92-96: the hospital-serial interleaving is dated c. 17-20 Nov by the 19/20 Nov datelines (the archive's ruling); Carlisle's 12-16 Nov dissent recorded, ours stands. Events 94 and 95 refined to prob. 18 Nov per a dating adjudication in this archive ("last night's St. Columbkill's" = Tue 17 Nov per p. 546).
- Event 94: Gately's "only about three weeks clean" (p. 857) — approximate as written vs. the 8-Nov Ennet entry / 7-8 Nov OD (n.134 ruling).
- Event 78: the text says "the 3-Woman room" — as printed; her actual room is the 5-Woman.
- Event 101: the Middlesex County Sheriff's car vs. Suffolk-Enfield — RESOLVED in the archive's rulings, following Carlisle (it's Gately's old Middlesex DUI charge, not an inconsistency).
- Event 90: Notkin reliability caveats built into her testimony — she gives Joelle's "real name" as Lucille Duquette (mistaken, or an alias, per the archive's name rulings; she doesn't know the name Joelle van Dyne), believes Joelle removed to an elite faraway treatment facility (she is at Ennet House), and has seen her naked "(though never unveiled)" (n.328).
- Event 7: n.307 — Joelle and Orin each remember being the one approached; both versions carried in the entry.
- Event 28: the two content-testimonies for the final cartridge (Joelle firsthand vs. Notkin secondhand) disagree on nearly everything except the lens — dispute carried in the entry.
- Event 102: Orin's "Do it to her!" — referent left open (the Luria operative, Joelle, or Avril); as printed.
- Event 1: mother vs. stepmother relation left unreconciled (homemaker mother, scene 058 frame; "a stepmother in a Locked Ward," p. 238) — as printed; cf. events 24 (mother's 24-Nov-YTMP suicide, per Notkin) and 72 (mother dead, "Worm-farming," per Joelle to Gately).
Additional corroborations and flags
- One night at B&W, not five. n.134 has the E.R. physician treating her "last night" and calling Pat "on Saturday night" — i.e. ONE night at Brigham and Women's (OD Sat 7 Nov, discharge Sun 8 Nov A.M.); an earlier "five days at B&W" gloss was unsupported. Events 61-62 follow n.134.
- Cross-range synchrony support: scene 067's timing note has the E.T.A. squads home ~0030h on 7 Nov, the same calendar day Joelle, across town that afternoon-evening, has Too Much Fun (scene 062) — in-range corroboration for dating the OD (60) 7 Nov.
- Scene 104's "last night" (pp. 536-537): the Waltham NA/Erdedy event was Mon 9 Nov but is called "last night" at 0450h Wed 11 Nov — a temporal slip, cited as written; it brackets the event-70 conversation's dating without moving it.
- Two identifications are inferences, not namings. Event 74: the flag-curtained Ennet House room is read as Joelle's own — an editorial inference, the text does not name her. Event 65: the Leavenworth-described veiled woman in the revolving door is likewise identified as Joelle by inference only. Both flagged as such.
