Summary

The longest endnote in the novel (~10,800 words; marker hangs off Hal's Separatism savvy in the prorector-class section, p. 310/scene 070): the fourth dramatized Orin–Hal phone call (after 9 May, scene 006; the 3-Nov Separatism ask, scene 041; and the JOI-suicide/grief-therapy call of 5 Nov, scene 064, pp. 242-258), two days after that last. On I.-Day Eve, with his ankle in a bucket of Epsom salts and Mario's shoebox archive of rescued family mail in his lap, Hal takes a high-toll call in which Orin — opening with the repellent "Speedy Seduction Strategy Number 7" (fake wedding ring, fictional seraphic wife) — gradually reveals the real agenda: "Helen" Steeply has been conducting "half-dozen or so very complex and far-ranging and in-depth conversations" with him, and Orin needs Hal to ghost-write "considered-sounding responses" to her questions: what does samizdat mean (1), why would the Mad Stork's name come up in connection with it (1a), and why did Québec's Separatists drop secession overnight to insurge against O.N.A.N. on behalf of a Canada they despise (2). Neither brother knows the call is an interrogation at one remove — U.S.O.U.S., hunting the Entertainment's Master, is using Orin to pump the family while Orin thinks he's profiling a Subject — and the note frames the dialogue with Avril's heartbreaking chirpy letter to "Filbert" and the solecism-riddled "Jethro Bodine" form reply Orin has a flunky send back, the still-open wound the whole conversation circles: Hal finally erupts that Orin's Separatism fetish is "really about" the mother he claims to have erased from RAM. Meanwhile Pemulis arrives in his I.-Day-Eve yachting cap to drag Hal to the annual duBois-and-dinner blowout, and — as Orin loops back to the one live wire, the samizdat-word linked to Himself — kills the phone console's power toggle, ending the endnote mid-word: "raised this samizdat-word in connec—" (p. 1021). Twelve lettered sub-footnotes (a-l) gloss the apparatus, from "Don't ask." to the Militant Grammarians of Massachusetts and the Calgarian pro-Canadian Phalanx.

What to notice

The novel's longest footnote carries its biggest near-disclosure, and the form is the point: the family's most consequential conversation is buried below the line, where only a note-reader finds it. The call is a three-layer relay interrogation — Steeply pumps Orin, Orin pumps Hal, Hal performs "considered-sounding responses" for a spy he'll never knowingly meet — and neither brother knows what the questions are for. Notice the framing documents: Avril's chirpy, heartbroken letter into the void, answered by a form letter signed "Cordjally, Jethro Bodine" — cruelty by solecism, from the son of a Militant Grammarian, the misspellings chosen because she'd feel each one. Hal's answer to question 1(a) is the book's great dramatic-irony wrong answer — none of Himself's work is banned, his politics were "subordinate to form" — the person best equipped to see the samizdat's source confidently looking past it. His verdict on Strategy #7 is the best one-line anatomy of Orin anywhere: "It's like suborning somebody into helping you desecrate a tomb they don't know is empty." And the ending is the novel's signature refused disclosure made typographic: just as the call is about to fuse the samizdat with the Mad Stork — "raised this samizdat-word in connec" — Pemulis's idly dusting fingers flip the power toggle, and the secret dies mid-word.

Beats — page-by-page

  • p. 1005: Frame: "later in the same day, 11/7" — Hal on his unmade bed, naked, right leg curled under, bad ankle in a janitor-pail of dissolved Epsom salts, riffling one of Mario's Hush Puppy shoeboxes (Mario = "the Incandenza family archivist ex officio," saving letters from wastebaskets and dumpsters; none to or from Mario himself). Saturday at E.T.A.: Hal's odd challenge match truncated when he tagged C-squadder Hugh Pemberton in the left eye-socket at net ("a sound like a champagne cork"; Thorp fears a detached retina). Tomorrow: I.-Day communal supper, special hats, real dessert, Mario-made film; tonight: the private Hal/Pemulis/Struck/Axford/Troeltsch/Schacht (sometimes Stice) day-before-I.-Day supper-out-and-Unexamined-Life blowout-gala. The transparent hand-me-down phone from Orin's E.T.A. days "exuding the vague contained menace of mute phones."
  • p. 1005: The 1412h message: Orin, over pro-locker-room ambience (snapped towels, antiperspirant hiss, a black man's falsetto laughter), "just grabbed an odd free second" to ask whether Hal ever noticed that every canonical Emily Dickinson poem can be sung to 'The Yellow Rose (of Texas),' and sort-of-sings two ("Because I could not stop for Death...").
  • pp. 1005-1006: Hal spits Kodiak into an old NASA glass; planted depth-charge: Avril "had done her undergraduate Honors work at McGill on the use of hyphens, dashes, and colons in E. Dickinson" — the Subject's "random" poetics chat is keyed to the Moms. Dickinson drifts through Hal's head as the phone twitters: "Ample make this bed, or Ample make this bed."
  • p. 1006: First embedded document, under the arch headline "A MOVING EXAMPLE OF THE SORTS OF PHYSICAL-POST MAIL MRS. AVRIL INCANDENZA HAS SENT HER ELDEST CHILD ORIN SINCE THE FELO DE SE OF DR. J. O. INCANDENZA... SEEMS TO IMPLY A CONTEXT OF REGULAR INTER-PARTY COMMUNICATION, STILL": dated 20 June Y.W.-Q.M.D., "Dear Filbert" (sub-fn a: "Don't ask."), "a quiet week here on Mount Gawdforsaken" (sub-fn b: "Ibid.") — C.T. vs. the "Sikorski-sized" bumblebee (grounds crew with skeet rifles, "two of whom are now recovering satisfactorily"); A-teams off to Milan; Avril crying at the terminal window every junket departure, "embarrassing everyone but Mario, who also cried"; the M.G.M. (sub-fn c: Militant Grammarians of Massachusetts, Avril's syntactic-integrity PAC) Less→Fewer Express-Checkout campaign — "Chortling is good. We like chortling"; "the wheels of adjectival justice continue, albeit creakily, to turn."
  • pp. 1006-1007: Letter continues: C.T.'s "Normal to Upper-normal" cholesterol verdict, vows of xerophagy, fish-liver oil ("Your brothers have taken to trekking over on slow nights to watch him swallow his oil"); a Telegrocer-magnate matriculate (sub-fn e: "the then-skinny Eliot Kornspan, before Loach and Freer got hold of him"; sub-fn f: Telegrocery explained, pp. 1021-1022); halo-and-mouth-guard maternal solicitude; congratulations on "the arbitration and contract"; "Miss You and Love You Lots, and c."
  • p. 1007: "AND AN EXAMPLE OF THE INVARIANT RESPONSE THESE PIECES OF MAIL ELICIT": the New Orleans Saints® form letter — "the large number of mail," "Inclosed," "how important you're letter has been to us," "Cordjally, Jethro Bodine, Assistant Mailroom Technician" — a 20×25 cm autographed action photo of ORIN INCANDENZA #71, sent to his own mother. (Sub-fn g: InterLace 'Grids' per O.N.A.N. nation.)
  • p. 1007: Call opens — 'Mmyellow.' / 'Presenting Speedy Seduction Strategy Number 7.' Hal: "Happy Inter-Day Eve. E Unibus Pluram and so on. Still dodging the disabled?" Strategy #7, "venue-adjustable" and "no-miss": present yourself to the Subject as happily married (ring optional if true), radiate involuntary mesmerized attraction — Orin's malapropisms (proviso, salivious, memerized, serapic) pedantically corrected by Hal mid-pitch.
  • pp. 1007-1008: The pitch's mechanism: maneuver the "devoted attracted conflicted pain" until you can ask the Subject "in all tortured sincerity" whether finding her attractive makes you a bad husband — "Display vulnerability and ask her to evaluate the like integrity of your heart." Bonus if actually married: "you and the Subject both, however briefly, get to believe it. The pitch." Preferred Subjects: married, "often with small children."
  • p. 1008: Hal's verdict, recalling Strategy 4 (the just-that-day-lapsed Jesuit seminarian with breviary and rented collar, Loach-inspired; Orin: "pretty much of a gynecopia also"): "It's like you're inventing somebody you love just to seduce somebody else into helping you betray her. What's it like. It's like suborning somebody into helping you desecrate a tomb they don't know is empty." Orin: "This is what I get for passing down priceless fruits of hard experience to somebody who still thinks it's exciting to shave."
  • p. 1009: Why is Hal even there in person at 1600? The Pemberton story ("He was walking around in diminishing circles like he'd been hit with a mallet"); Hal's flat unremorse — "Kitchens and heat, O. I've taken my share of balls in various spots"; the week's C-vs-A carnage (Schtitt punishing A-team "tentativity" after Port Washington). Orin remembers Pemberton ("a kid that looks like he's curtsying when he serves") and registers Hal's rise: "Word is you're worth watching now... I keep my ear to the cement, Hallie." Orin offers to fly to Tucson for the WhataBurger semis after the Saints' 27th-or-28th Patriots game; the four-year estrangement surfaces as a joke that isn't: "You'll probably need to wear some sort of sign around your neck so I know it's you." Orin — the estrangement's engine idling under the banter — makes Hal promise "the advance skinny if anybody I didn't want to see was by any chance flying down there with you guys": warn him if the Moms comes to Tucson.
  • p. 1010: More carnage detail (Struck's hidden 3-kilo ankle-weights vs. Gloeckner; Wayne making van Slack cry — "Word is Wayne has exactly one gear"; Coyle beating new kid Stockhausen with his left wrist tied to his right ankle until Schtitt sends Tex Watson down). The wheelchair-stalker thread from 5 Nov updated: "I haven't seen wheel one in days"; Orin's theory of "a kind of very shy sort of fan club of people without legs that look up to me... as, like, the ultimate leg" (Hal: "Grotesque entendre"). Hal pre-empts: "No sightings of any journalists. Your Moment profiler." Kodiak sidebar: Orin warns the chew will take Hal's jaw off; Hal blames the caries on heredity — "The Himself whose root canals put Dr. Zegarelli's kids through Andover."
  • p. 1010: The agenda lands: "This basically nonsocial call, H., is because I need your feedback on some issues from these half-dozen or so very complex and far-ranging and in-depth conversations I had with a certain Subject." The Dickinson theory "came from these conversations"; Hal dryly demolishes it ("Dickinson's about as Transcendentalist as Poe. Your Subject's 0 for 2") and names the game: "you'd consider what she wanted to hear and how to ladle it on until she begs you to have intercourse with her."
  • p. 1011: Question 1: "what does the following word I can't find in the dictionary mean: s-a-m-i-z-d-a-t." Hal's instant lexical-prodigy gloss: Russian compound, sam- "self" + izdat "to publish," "the sub-rosa dissemination of politically charged materials that were banned when the Eschaton-era Kremlin was going around banning things"; connotatively any beyond-the-pale press; no U.S. samizdat "First Amendment-wise," but "ultra-radical Québecois and Albertan stuff could be considered O.N.A.N.ite samizdat" — incendiary materials only; per Poutrincourt the R.C.M.P.s can impound literature and hardware without warrant. Orin: "Pow." (And: "R.C.M.P." / "Mounties, O." / "The Nelson Eddy guys in silly hats and equestrian jaspers.")
  • p. 1011: Question 1(a) — the bombshell Hal doesn't hear as one: "So you'd have no idea why The Mad Stork's name would come up in connection with somebody saying samizdat." Hal answers as film critic: some Séparatisteurs might misread The ONANtiad, Brick, Poultry in Motion as anti-Reconfiguration, Immanent Domain as Concavity allegory (anachronistically — "Gentle wasn't even President when the thing came out"); much of Himself's work was self-distributed; but "Himself's work was all very self-consciously American. His interest in politics was subordinate to form. Always. And none of it's banned" — orderable "in Manitoba, Vera Cruz, anywhere" off InterLace back-menus.
  • p. 1012: Hal flags tomorrow's schedule ("reading for Boards till the Eschaton at 1400. Holiday tolls are low") and twice steers Orin toward "the person who's really the person to chat with about all issues Canadian" — the Moms. Question 2 staged: why did every Séparatisteur faction, "from the Bloc Québecois and Fils de Montcalm all the way out to the really bug-eyed radical fringe," drop Québec independence "like a rock" and switch overnight to anti-O.N.A.N./anti-Reconfiguration agitation? Hal objects to "Nuck," pleads nanomicroscopic disinterest in O.N.A.N.ite politics, then nails the subtext: "And don't tell me: this is your Moment profiler? Your Boswell in an E cup?... Am I really just supposed to sit down with her and paint you now as a political-minded ex-seminarian...?"
  • p. 1012: The E.T.A.-access sidebar: Schtitt now controls press contact; C.T. sees E.T.A. "as a sort of prophylactic against commercial attention"; deLint's Admissions-Manual appendix on "junior development and toxic hype" — "The Manual now invites us to see ourselves as in utero and hype as thalidomide"; C.T. will "filibuster her till she throws herself out the window like that journalist from Condé Nast last fall." Orin, flatly: "Helen'll be able to get in." Then: "Forget the profile. Speak to her or don't. This is personal." Hal's diagnosis: "She's Strategy-resistant because she knows too much to fall for a persona."
  • p. 1013: Orin's mangled history audit ("Fronte Libération," "Fils de Montcalm. Or is it maybe du?", the Spandex-and-pancake-makeup cell, "giant pies dropped on Ottawa after the third Meech Lake Accord," "Notre Rai Pays," the Crétien assassination); Hal supplies the old anti-Ottawa terror grammar ("Or we blow up the Frontenac. Or we irradiate Winnipeg. Or we put a railroad-spike through Crétien's eye. This is not exactly deep-depth, O."). First Avril-knife: "We have a blood-relative who's got dual citizenship, if you recall... I'm sure. Once her jaw recovered from being unhinged by joy that you actually called." And: "'d you know she's never once asked me whether Booboo and I hear from you? Not once. A sort of appalled pride. She's ashamed of even hurting over it."
  • p. 1014: Hal's actual considered answer: "The historical record indicates pretty clearly that the one and only nationalism in the Québecois soul is Québecois nationalism" — Lesotho/SOUTHAF analogy; Poutrincourt on why Québec ≠ the antebellum South; Meech Lake III (sub-fn h: Ottawa's fifth and final 'distinct society' placation attempt) failed because they've only ever seen themselves as "hostages of Ottawa"; even moderates frame 1759's Plains of Abraham surrender as forced property-transfer, French-Canadians "not the losers so much as the spoils. Booty" (sub-fn i: 'La Guerre des Britanniques et des Sauvages,' BS c. 1754-60; "the wily Amherst... with his trusty smallpox-blankets"). House comedy: "Just mention 1759 and the Moms's lips disappear" — Pemulis and Axford chalk a big gothic 1759 on the blackboard before G&M (sub-fn j: Grammar and Meaning) just to watch. Steeply's polls: "upwards of four-fifths of all Canadians wanted out of O.N.A.N. and hoped President Gentle had a ghastly accident in his UV-booth."
  • pp. 1014-1015: Hal turns the lens: this Rubensian profiler is unlike Orin's type, more work than his Subjects demand, and Orin won't dish details — "It's complex. She's grown on me... I've discovered levels and dimensions to her I didn't know were originally there." Then the eruption, the call's emotional core: Orin "[w]ants to blame her, won't admit it... sweepingly blames the whole affair of Himself on her, won't interface with her or worse even acknowledge her, resents even the fact she forgives things like you and Marlon Bain killing her dog" ("—a hit-and-run-and-back-up-and-hit-again driver, I told you rep—"); the Jethro Bodine letters as deliberate cruelty ("Jethro Bodine, O.? Jethro Bodine?" — Orin: "A private chuckle. She'd never get it."); "Orin 'Home-wrecker' Incandenza, this is what the team calls you, in like jest? You sick pup." (Orin: "I'm a sick pup? I'm the sick one?") — and Hal pressing on: Orin "tells himself he's convinced himself she doesn't even exist... but by some coincidence has this rapacious fetish for young married mothers."
  • p. 1015: Orin absorbs it ("water off a duck's back. I can tell it's the tooth talking") and defends Helen as "strickenly dissimilar from what you're indicting." Hal's counter-theory: she demurred, and the demurral piqued him (the disputed car-antenna-bottom locker-room remark — "Hallie I never said any such fucking thing"). Orin's strange sincerity about her bigness: "a girl and a half in all directions... something that seemed cross-cultural about it... More of someone to love. Not to mention queerly and oddly intense and alive and vibrant"; "a heartbreakingly lovely face... all peachy and lissome, like big pretty girls get." Hal: keep her away from Stice, "he really is a Rubensophile." The reserve QB's line: a face that'd "break your heart and then also break the heart of whoever like rushed over to your aid as you pitched over sideways grabbing your chest." ("She was in the locker room?" / "It's the law.")
  • p. 1015: Back to the puzzle: the anti-O.N.A.N. mayhem catalogue — ATHSCME towers blown, mirrors stretched across U.S. highways, fleur-de-lis banners on U.S. monuments, InterLace pulse disruption, "skywrite Nuck obscenities over Buffalo," waste-launcher dickying "so it rains moose-guano on New Haven" (Hal: "The New Haven Brown Rain thing was sort of a chortle, though" — "Chortles are good. We like chortles," the Moms's letter-idiom in Hal's mouth, possibly literally in his lap), O.N.A.N.ite V.I.P. shootings, the foiled Planters-jar anaerobic toxins.
  • p. 1016: Hal's self-portrait, the note's thesis statement on his hermetic life: "I'm a privileged white seventeen-year-old U.S. male. I'm a student at a tennis academy that sees itself as a prophylactic... I eat, sleep, evacuate, highlight things with yellow markers, and hit balls... I am just about as apolitical as someone can be. I am out of all loops but one, by design. I'm sitting here naked with my foot in a bucket." Why expect coherence from fringe mentalities anywhere (Nuevo Contras, Shining Path, P.E.T.A. arsonists, "Gentle and the poor C.U.S.P.s" — sub-fn k: the Clean U.S. Party)?
  • p. 1016: The flashpoint: "This stuff isn't about you and me. The person this stuff is about is the person you say you've erased from all RAM. Why not tell the damn truth for once?... Whom do you think this is really about? Can you be that sick that you can't even admit it over the fucking phone?" Silence ("Or what?"); then the call's one wholly sincere exchange: "I'm sorry, O. I apologize." / "Think nothing of it. I know you didn't mean it." / "I hate losing the temper." / "You don't sound good, Hallie. You sound ground down." Hal: "These tooth-episodes make me feel like that wobbled shrieking figure in that Munch lithograph."
  • p. 1016: Pemulis's entrance pantomime: head and shoulder through the cracked door, his own clawed hand "pulling him back out into the hall" with fake terror; yachting cap, fake naval epaulets, a piratical gold hoop earring that lights in sync with his pulse, right eye wobbly "when two or three Tenuates are wearing off."
  • p. 1017: Hal supplies "the most obvious response," the Concavity-contiguity answer: ~three-quarters of the Concavity's northern border — "something like 750 clicks... with attendant seepage" — runs along Québec ("Exactamundo"); plus the brunt of high-altitude ATHSCME airborne wastes and E.W.D.-overshoot splatting. The afflictions catalogue: "western Québecer kids the size of Volkswagens shlumpfing around with no skulls... cloracne and tremors and olfactory hallucinations and infants born with just one eye in the middle of their forehead... green sunsets and indigo rivers and grotesquely asymmetrical snow-crystals and front lawns they have to beat back with a machete... feral-hamster incursions and the Infant-depredations and the corrosive fogs"; Orin adds Fundy phenols, Japanese-movie lobsters, "Nova Scotia glows, at night, in satellite photos." Hal: "Once again they get the gooey end of the Canadian dipstick" — "a real straw-and-camel feel to the whole thing."
  • p. 1017: Pemulis pretend-kicks the door in ("Good Lard preserve us he's nekkid"), checks behind it, mimes wristwatch; "Except here's the thing," Orin relays Steeply's deeper probe: is there realistic hope of forcing de-Reconfiguration — taking back the Concavity, shutting the fans, making the U.S. "acknowledge the waste as fundamentally American waste"? Pemulis compulsively zips/unzips everything in the room (a habit Hal loathes), points at the tow truck, mimes Henry-VIII rending and chewing.
  • p. 1018: Hal: "Well probably of course not... Does fish-shit drift slowly bottomward, O.?" — so the insurgency is "simply largely symbolic at best." Foot out of the bucket, dried on "a woppsed-up sheet"; Pemulis tosses Hal's briefs with a pretend-shudder; the Mr. Hope negotiation conducted in stage-whispers under a hand and two pillows clamped over the phone — the annual pre-blowout duBois behind West House's dumpsters is to be rolled "out of my part of the Hope I bought retail from you not three days ago" ("Extenuations. We can get it all sorted out right later. Nobody's going to like exploit you."). Hal's one loop, hidden from Orin in real time.
  • pp. 1018-1019: The Subject's "crux-type proposal" (Hal may ponder and call back collect tonight or before lunch tomorrow): if secession is the pearl, de-Reconfiguration hopeless, and the Concavity universally odious, why don't the Separatists wig up and go to Ottawa offering to take the Concavity with them — "it'll be our blot and our bone of dissension with O.N.A.N." — re-gerrymandering O.N.A.N.'s map so "everybody wins"? "Why wouldn't your thinking militant Nucks use the Concavity as a bargaining chip for independence?"
  • p. 1019: Hal relays it to the pacing Pemulis ("Who's this you're talking to you can't call back?" / "Orin as in your brother, with the leg?") and has the aperçu: "This could be Poutrincourt's so-called Separation and return's real meaning, it occurs to me." Pemulis's megaphone-hands rant: "Tell him who gives a bright flaming fart! Tell him to go read a book!... instead of we don't just stand there and swing one leg up and down over and over for seven-plus figures." Orin: "Tell Penisless to go sit on something sharp." Hal: "I can feel that feeling of my body starting to feed on itself."
  • pp. 1019-1020: Orin's (i.e. Steeply's) scenario, stepped up: picture the F.L.Q. et al. diverting all terror southward while orchestrating the appearance of pan-Canadian insurgency (Albertan ultra-rightists brought in). Hal: "I don't have to picture it. It's what's going on" — C.P.C.P. (sub-fn l: the Calgarian pro-Canadian Phalanx) clockwork Montana incursions, the Duluth InterLace jamming that substituted porn for children's programming, Interstates north of Saratoga undrivable after sunset. Why fake the pan-Canadian front? So that Gentle, U.S.O.U.S.'s "boys in white," and Mexico's "Vichified puppet-state" make Canada "the sort of black scapegoat of all of O.N.A.N." — with E.W.D. vectors recalibrated north, "good-sized chunks of Canada could be Concavitized."
  • p. 1020: Hal hears the ventriloquism: "Vichified? Anschluss? This doesn't sound like any Orin I know. These are rabidly political catchwords" — Steeply's diction passing through Orin like a signal through a repeater. Pemulis vaults the bed ("Kyaaaa!") clawing at the transparent phone's antenna; Hal shields it with a shoulder, whipping him with a sweatshirt. The meta-extortion endgame spelled out: Québec wreaks "various mayhi," then someone respectable gets wigged up and offers Ottawa the deal — let Québec go and it will take sole, public credit as O.N.A.N.'s real nemesis, "[o]ffering themselves as the culprit and de-Reconfiguration as the objective" — engineering it "so that Canada'll be more than happy to disassociate from them." Hal, under the desk hunting his street-shoe in nests of wire, names it: "So your multilevelled journalist's hypothesizing a kind of meta-extortion... their anti-O.N.A.N. insurgency is not what it appears."
  • pp. 1020-1021: Hal's objection: "The total anti-U.S. insurgency so far's been too hapless and small-potato for her theory to work... None of this is making Canada or Québec look like any kind of serious threat." Orin, sitting up straight: "that was just my response... which is where she moved beyond my depth back into 1(a), if you remember, when she raised this samizdat-word in connec—" — and the endnote ends mid-word: Pemulis, "his jaunty cap pushed back and his lips pursed as if whistling, but not whistling," has been "very casually brushing his hand over the drive and console's power unit, as if killing time by casually dusting," fingers tapping "a little anapestic gallop over the unit's top" beside the toggle — and flips it. The line — and the note — dies at the exact moment the conversation was about to fuse samizdat + the Mad Stork + the insurgency, i.e., to speak the novel's central secret: that the Separatists' real weapon is Himself's last film.
  • pp. 1021-1022: Lettered sub-footnotes a-l (electronic-text markers [*12]-[*23]): a "Don't ask." (Filbert); b "Ibid." (Mount Gawdforsaken); c the M.G.M. = Militant Grammarians of Massachusetts, Avril's PAC; d YWQMD rice-bran craze; e Eliot Kornspan; f Telegrocery (first metro-Boston launch in the Yushityu year; "still mostly in Boston a downscale and blue-collar thing, oddly"); g InterLace Grids; h Meech Lake III as Ottawa's "fifth and final attempt to placate Québec"; i the French and Indian War / Plains of Abraham 1759 / Amherst's smallpox-blankets ("whose memory for insult is the stuff of legend"); j Grammar and Meaning; k Clean U.S. Party; l Calgarian pro-Canadian Phalanx.

Themes in this scene

  • Nationalism and O.N.A.N.: the novel's single most compact Separatism seminar — the Concavity's 750-click contiguity with Québec, ATHSCME/E.W.D. burdens, the secession→anti-O.N.A.N. about-face, and the meta-extortion theory — all delivered as seduction-prep patter.
  • Surveillance and Disguise: a three-layer relay of covert interrogation: Steeply-as-Helen pumps Orin, who pumps Hal, who performs depth for a spy he'll never knowingly meet; the A.F.R.'s wheelchaired watchers idle in the background ("I haven't seen wheel one in days"); even Pemulis's sabotage is performed as casual dusting.
  • Entertainment and the Self: question 1(a) — the Mad Stork's name "in connection with somebody saying samizdat" — is the Entertainment hunt arriving inside the family by phone; Hal's confident "none of it's banned... His interest in politics was subordinate to form" is the book's great dramatic-irony wrong answer.
  • Family and Hamlet: framed by Avril's chirpy letter into the void and the Jethro Bodine cruelty machine; Hal's eruption names the system — Orin blames the Moms for "the whole affair of Himself," disowns her, then compulsively seduces young married mothers; "Whom do you think this is really about?"
  • Communication and Solipsism: ~10,800 words of high-toll connection conducted almost entirely in shtick, malapropism-correction, and ghost-written "considered-sounding responses," concealments running both ways (Orin hides Helen's authorship and his fear; Hal smothers the phone to hide the Hope) — and the connection is literally severed mid-word.
  • Language and Grammar: Avril everywhere in the language itself — the M.G.M. Less→Fewer crusade, her Dickinson-punctuation scholarship, Hal's compulsive corrections of Orin's malaprops, the family "chortle" idiom, the form letter's weaponized solecisms ("you're letter," "Cordjally").
  • Irony and Sincerity: Strategy #7 is an engine for manufacturing believed sincerity ("you and the Subject both, however briefly, get to believe it. The pitch"); against it, the call's few unguarded seconds — the apology, "You sound ground down," Orin's strange earnest aria on Helen's bigness — land like breaches in armor.
  • Annularity: the Concavity material is the waste-cycle made geopolitics — seepage, overshooting E.W.D. waste-vehicles, fans, the threat to "Concavitize" more land — and the proposed bargaining chip is the waste-territory itself, circulating as leverage.

  • Companion piece to scene 064 (main text pp. 242-258, 5 Nov YDAU): that call covered Himself's suicide, Hal's finding the body, and the grief-therapist saga ("That something smelled delicious!"); this one, two days later, covers the Moms and Separatism — and the Separatism ask is itself a repeat, escalated from the 3-Nov call of scene 041 ("What all do you know about Separatism?"). Same dynamic each time — Orin strip-mining Hal's interiority for material to feed "Helen," the wheelchair-stalkers thread carried over (pp. 244-245 → p. 1010), the "forbidden topics" list of p. 247 now being worked through item by item by U.S.O.U.S.
  • Grief-therapist loop-back: Hal's coached, literature-derived performance for the grief-pro (scene 064, pp. 252-257) is the same skill exercised here — producing "considered-sounding responses" to order — and echoes the professional conversationalist fiasco years earlier (scene 005, pp. 27-32: JOI's disguised attempt to verify Hal speaks) and Hal's late-book fear that he's "in here" and inaudible: performance-fluency as the family disease.

Forward

  • Marker hangs off scene 070 (p. 310): Hal's Separatism fluency from Poutrincourt's class, and the narrator's flag that "Orin's asking for help from him with anything was strange enough in itself." Hal's p. 1019 aperçu about "Poutrincourt's so-called Separation and return's real meaning" gains teeth when Poutrincourt later talks Separatist realpolitik with Steeply at E.T.A. (pp. 673-714).
  • Steeply's Orin operation: the profile pretext (scene 061's putative CV; scene 068's profile-framed B.U./Joelle history) continues through the Marathe-Steeply discussions of using Orin (scene 077 ff.) and pays off in "Helen'll be able to get in" (p. 1012) — Steeply on E.T.A. grounds from ~10-11 Nov (the deLint-chaperoned observation of Hal's match, pp. 654 ff.) — exactly the Schtitt/deLint gauntlet Hal predicts here. Endgame: the A.F.R. reaches Orin first (the tumbler-and-roaches torture, "Do it to her," pp. 971-972).
  • The samizdat/Mad Stork fusion the cut-off forestalls is the reader's open secret since scene 029 (pp. 87-92, Marathe/Steeply on the Entertainment) and scene 007 (the attaché); Hal's "none of it's banned" film-crit answer should be read against n.24's Infinite Jest (V?) entry (scene n024; p. 993: Master "either destroyed or vaulted sui testator") and Joelle/Molly Notkin's accounts (pp. 788-795).
  • The severed connection is this note's version of the book's signature refused disclosure — cf. the Eschaton debacle interrupting (next day, scene 073, pp. 321-342: "the Eschaton at 1400," p. 1012, is that scene scheduled in advance), and the novel's ending debate (Hal's promised call-back, like so much else, never occurs on the page; by 20 Nov the WhataBurger/Orin-visit horizon is beyond the book's last YDAU pages, surfacing only in the YG frame of scene 001 — Hal in Tucson, "There is nothing wrong. I'm in here").
  • Avril threads: the letter's M.G.M. (sub-fn c) is the Militant Grammarians of the main text (language-grammar tag across scenes); her McGill Dickinson scholarship (p. 1005-1006) makes Steeply's Dickinson small-talk look researched — U.S.O.U.S. knows the family file; her "appalled pride" (p. 1013) pairs with scene 010 (pp. 39-42, the Moms's sadness Mario asks about) and with politeness-roulette (scene 102). The dog-killing with Marlon Bain (p. 1015) belongs to the Orin-Bain past mined in n.269.
  • E.T.A. texture: Zegarelli the Group-Plan D.D.S. (p. 1010) recurs at pp. 509, 526 (scene 102); Schacht as Anbesol source and odontology-adjacent confidant (pp. 1009, 1018) extends his portrait (scenes 065, 073); the C-vs-A challenge carnage and WhataBurger stakes set up the Wayne-vs-Veach and Hal-ranking talk that runs through the late E.T.A. chapters; the Unexamined Life / Mr. Hope ritual connects to the pump-room regime (scene 013, pp. 49-54) and to Hal's abstinence crisis after 11 Nov.
  • Pemulis as connection-killer: the Tenuate nystagmus and casual-dusting sabotage of the power toggle prefigure his larger role as the one who cuts Hal off (the DMZ thread, nn.321-325, and the late expulsion arc); his "Penisless" nickname exchange with Orin keys to n.129's Miles Penn lore.
  • The Concavity-afflictions catalogue (p. 1017) is the compact main-line statement of lore distributed across feral hamsters (scene 030, p. 93), the Concavity cabinet/Clipperton frame (scene 086), Mario's ONANtiad pageant (scene 081), and Marathe/Steeply's annular-economics arguments (scenes 088, 096).

Notable passages (10)

  • p. 1005: "exuding the vague contained menace of mute phones" — the call announced as threat; communication-solipsism in one clause.
  • p. 1006: Avril's letter, "It's been a quiet week here on Mount Gawdforsaken" — the Moms's whole performed-buoyancy register in one artifact (with the narrator's "HERE'S THE MOVING PART" headline doing the book's irony-sincerity dance over it).
  • p. 1007: "Cordjally, Jethro Bodine, Assistant Mailroom Technician" — cruelty by solecism, from the son of the Militant Grammarian.
  • p. 1008: "It's like suborning somebody into helping you desecrate a tomb they don't know is empty." — Hal on Strategy #7; the book's best one-line anatomy of Orin.
  • p. 1011: the samizdat etymology ("the Eschaton-era Kremlin") — Hal's lexical set-piece; the word that will hang over the rest of the novel defined by the person it most concerns.
  • p. 1013: "A sort of appalled pride. She's ashamed of even hurting over it" — Avril through Hal's eyes; family-hamlet anchor.
  • p. 1015: the reserve QB on Helen's face — "break your heart and then also break the heart of whoever like rushed over to your aid" — comedy concealing the operation's whole method.
  • p. 1016: "I am out of all loops but one, by design. I'm sitting here naked with my foot in a bucket." — Hal's self-audit; the "one loop" he's smothering the phone to protect.
  • p. 1016: "I'm sorry, O. I apologize." / "Think nothing of it. I know you didn't mean it." — the call's one fully sincere exchange; followed by "You sound ground down."
  • p. 1021: "when she raised this samizdat-word in connec—" — the endnote's severed last word: disclosure of the novel's secret cut off by a flipped toggle; pairs with every other refused climax in the book.
