Mario groping for the word for her cued background music and landing, of all available words, on haunting — in the domesticated idiom-sense he can handle. The raw then quietly turns the idiom literal: her cued musics stir very early memories of Mario's father, the very tall man who carried the boys to bed and who will return as an actual wraith.
