• What: For E.T.A., "the evolved product of concordance and compromise" between Avril's academic hard-assery and JOI/Schtitt's athletic pragmatics: Avril "quit M.I.T. entirely and went down to half-time at Brandeis and even turned down an extremely plummy-type stipended fellowship at Radcliffe's Bunting Institute" to design and run the curriculum on the classical trivium/quadrivium. She serves (pro bono) as Dean of Academic Affairs and Dean of Females. Her imprint is on the campus's very shape: E.T.A.'s cardioid layout — buildings convexly rounded "all derived from arcs of the same r" — was "pull-offable probably by on the whole East Coast one guy, E.T.A.'s original architect, Avril's old and very dear friend, the topology world's closed-curve-mapping-Übermensch A.Y. ('Vector-Field') Rickey of Brandeis U., now deceased" (n3 p. 0983). When JOI dies, "Salic law'd nothing to do with" the fact that she could not become Headmaster ("how would 'Headmistress' have sounded?"); she brings in C.T. instead, JOI having already ceded most operations to him.
