Lyle
Lyle is the oiled, Spandex-clad "sweat-guru" who lives on top of the towel dispenser in the Enfield Tennis Academy weight room, dispensing counsel to E.T.A. players in exchange (literally) for the sweat he licks off their arms and foreheads. Lyle has almost no datable biography: the novel gives him no origin story, no age past "maybe forty," and no exit; he is a standing E.T.A. institution who "went way back" with the Academy's late founder, James O. Incandenza. So most of this page is STANDING / UNDATED material (his method, his parables, his supplicants), placed at its best-guess position the way the exemplar handles undated events, with the few date-stamped counsel sessions (early-to-mid November YDAU) in date order, and the JOI-era history (his bond with Himself, the birth of Found Drama, the all-night libation sessions, the grief-therapy after JOI's death) set where the text anchors it.
One thread the book deliberately leaves open is whether Lyle is more than human: he is described and, in one montage, narrated as levitating a few millimeters above the dispenser; reports of him merely walking across the grounds cause a campus sensation; nobody knows where he comes from or why he is allowed to stay. This page records every uncanny attestation and resolves none — each is marked by whose eyes it comes through (narration vs. a character's claim).

Arc
Lyle has no arc in the ordinary sense — he is the still point the other arcs bend around — and the timeline's work is to show how much structure the book hangs on a man with no origin, no age past "maybe forty," no surname, and no exit (1). What he has instead is an economy: sweat for counsel, "the fluids and salts and fatty acids" for "some little nugget of fitness-guru wisdom," transacted nightly in a weight room the supplicants unlock with ravaged meal-cards (1, 6). The counsel is the book's cleanest wisdom-literature — the hundred keys and the perfectionist frozen at the door (8), the fame-cage told to LaMont Chu ("You burn with hunger for food that does not exist"; "The truth will set you free. But not until it is finished with you," 9), "do not underestimate objects" for Stice's moving bed (11) — but the narration insists the real service is prior to the content: "it's the way he listens, somehow, that keeps the saunas full" (6). In a school whose official counselor is "just slightly worse than useless," Lyle is the working confessor, bracketed by the text itself into the founding triumvirate of E.T.A.'s ethos, "the more paradoxical Schtitt/Incandenza/Lyle school" (15).
The Incandenza thread is the closest thing to biography he gets. He "went way back" with the founder — a bond the text locates twice and incompatibly, a Northwest-coast spa in JOI's dark B.S. '80s vs. "Ontario" in the Weston years, both cited as written (2). He is the drinking partner who matched Wild Turkey with Caffeine-Free Diet Coke and read Blake aloud in cartoon voices till Himself found it deep (4); the midwife of the late aesthetic — Found Drama and anticonfluentialism "both came out of this night with Lyle" (3); the confessor through whom JOI's only candid word about his own films reaches his sons, at triple hearsay (5); the companion whose whereabouts tracked JOI's final month (14); and, after the microwave, the griever "down there reading Leaves of Grass" who taught the thirteen-year-old Hal how to survive grief-therapy (14). The pattern repeats a generation down: Mario as his ally and referral partner (10, 16), Hal carrying his methods — attention on the pain, on the fear, on one's own death — into the November crisis, and weighing "what Lyle would say" beside Schtitt's voice as one of the two authorities in his head (19, 21).
What Lyle is, the book conspicuously declines to say, and the timeline holds the more-than-human crux open as built. The uncanny attestations come at graded strengths: flat narration — he "hovers cross-legged just a couple mm. above the top of the towel dispenser," eyes rolled white, in the same register the montage uses for Pemulis's ceiling panel (13), and the founding-era note that reports of Lyle "upright and walking across the grounds" caused a photographed campus sensation (17); student myth — "a meter off the rubberized floor," the shoulder-pull that becomes a chin-up, "lo" (1, 20); and claim — Stice's "parabnormal" secret, kept by Lyle alone, whose forehead Lyle for once "didn't even want to get near" (18). Against all of it the text plants the deflationary reading in Axford's mouth: maybe the lotus position just means he's high (20). Guru, saint, wraith-adjacent something, or Spandex nut — the record attests each register and adjudicates none. The one crack the book allows in the stillness is human: the memory of Marlon Bain's impossible lemony omniwetness and "a tormentingly unspecific hope in the air" (7) — the listener who lives off others' effort, caught once wanting something for himself.
Timeline (21 events)
Key to the timeline
Events are ordered by when they happen in the story, not by where they fall in the book's pages.
★ marks a pivotal event — one that carries this character's arc. Unmarked events add texture around it.
Where an event says how it is known, that basis is one of: narrated (the narration states it), recalled (a character's own memory), reported (secondhand or testimony), claimed (asserted by someone with a stake), or disputed (conflicting versions). Conflicting details are quoted as the book has them rather than resolved.
Dating notes (apparatus)
Consolidated unresolved date/identity puzzles and attribution flags; as printed throughout.
- JOI-origin geography clash (2): scene 138 places the JOI-Lyle bonding "in a remote spa off Canada's Northwest coast" during the "dark B.S. '80s" (p. 0705); n234 has JOI "going back up to Lyle in Ontario" during the family's Weston years (p. 1041). Northwest coast vs. Ontario are unreconciled — cite both as written. Scene 039's "went way back with Dr. Incandenza... in the past" gives no place at all.
- "You are what you walk between" / "Traversion is character" (2): both appear in n234, but attributed to Schtitt and to Schtitt's own mentor, NOT to Lyle. They are recorded here only for the thematic rhyme with Lyle's guru-practice (the task's craft brief) and for cross-reference to the Schtitt-lineage material in scene 049; they are not Lyle's words.
- "Despairing type" taxonomy (21): the Despairing/Obsessive/ Complacent player typology in scene 036 is John Wayne's (relayed by LaMont Chu), not Lyle's — logged to correct a likely conflation. Lyle's only scene-036 contribution is the Ingersoll shadow-diagnosis.
- The more-than-human crux (events 1, 13, 17, 18; cf. 14, 20): the text supplies uncanny attestations at graded levels of authority — narrated-as-fact (the levitation, scene 137; "a meter off the rubberized floor," scene 039), narrated campus-sensation (Lyle walking, scene 089), reported (his whereabouts shadowing JOI's, scene 064; his declining Stice's forehead, scene 157), and claimed (Stice's "parabnormal" secret, scene 167) — plus the counter-reading that he is merely a Spandex nut who may be high (scene 057). Whether Lyle is a wraith, supernatural, or in some division-of-labor with JOI's wraith is NOT settled by the novel and is left open here by design.
- "Reading" of Lyle's grief-counsel (14): Hal himself flags that the goods-delivery, empathize-with-the-professional advice "doesn't sound like Lyle" / "The Lyle my class knew wasn't a how-to-deliver-the-goods-to-authorities-type figure" (scene 064) — an in-text inconsistency in Lyle's characterization, as printed.
- Scenes checked that yielded no Lyle material: scene 175 (pp. 0916-0934) contains no Lyle attestation (only scene of the roster to yield nothing). Scene 094 yields only the applied-teaching datum (19); scenes 065, 117, 154 yield only the minor Lyle-Mario/relay data covered under event 16; scene 160 yields only the Marlon-Bain corroboration and the after-hours-music datum (7); scene 179 yields only the "what Lyle would say" internalized-authority datum (19).
- Undated placement: the many STANDING events (1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10, 13, 15, 16, 19, 20, 21) have no absolute stamps and sit at best-guess positions per the exemplar's standing-event convention; only events 2-3 (JOI history), 8-12 (early-Nov YDAU sessions), 14 (YTSDB grief), 17 (~YW Clipperton), and 18 (late-Nov blizzard night) carry usable anchors.
