A character key: E.T.A.'s coach Gerhardt Schtitt was an early J. Gentle supporter, and though Schtitt leans so far right that his talk of America and decadence unnerved people, Mario alone understood the real draw — Schtitt responded to the "athleto-Wagnerian" (p. 1031) logic of Gentle's waste-disposal scheme, "this business of sending from yourself what you hope will not return" (p. 1031).
