• When: The condition is congenital; definitively diagnosed when Mario was six.
• What: Mario's central neurological deficit is Familial Dysautonomia: he can't feel physical pain well. It went undiagnosed until he was six, after he let Orin tattoo his shoulder with the red coil of an immersion heater. E.T.A.s (and sometimes Hal) envy it, but it is dangerous (cf. the undetected stove burn, event 112).
