Summary

A scene rendered entirely in dialogue: thirteen-year-old Idris Arslanian, blindfolded as a self-imposed experiment in Thorp's theory that the blind prospect Dymphna's uncanny anticipation comes from reading sound-intensity, collides in the tunnel hallway first with Ted Schacht and then with Michael Pemulis, all the while begging to be led to a lavatory. Behind the weight-room door, Anton Doucette is "anxiously depressed" — convinced his block about annulation will flunk him out of Watson's Energy survey and end his tennis career — and Lyle and Mario are working him back from the brink while crueler players run a pool on the outcome. Pemulis, holding Arslanian's bladder hostage, delivers the novel's fullest plain-language explication of annular fusion: the pseudocartographic right triangle of Montpelier–Methuen–Loring A.F.B., JOI's holographic-conversion contribution, the medicine-derived idea of giving cancer cancer, and the prime-number-date E.W.D. catapulting that cycles the eastern Concavity from wasteland to monstrous lushness. The scene closes with Pemulis discovering that the devout, Substance-free Muslim boy has urine he's "so anxious to get rid of" — and proposing they hash out a deal over some porcelain.

What to notice

The pure-dialogue form is diegetic here: a blindfolded speaker can identify nobody, so identification runs on voice alone — the scene enacts Thorp's sound-over-sight theory as its own narrative method, and Pemulis exploits the blindness instantly by announcing himself as "Troeltsch, James L., slightly doubled over." Notice how the book's biggest single infodump gets dramatized as a hostage situation: Arslanian's bladder is the clock, his escalating pleas ("Please conduct me.") punctuating each expository paragraph, so the reader's appetite for the lecture is made to cost a thirteen-year-old visible suffering — the novel needling its own expository greed while delivering the goods whole. The closing urine deal then reframes the entire conversation retroactively: Pemulis clocked the desperation dance early and stalled on purpose; the generous thumbnail lecture was a sales floor. And the scene's best fusion of joke and physics belongs to Arslanian's formal ESL idiom, which keeps producing accidental poetry — the Concavity's accelerated flux glossed as "As if nature itself had desperately to visit the lavatory."

Themes in this scene

  • Annularity: the book's clearest in-text seminar on annular fusion — the closed right triangle of waste-into-fuel-into-waste, medicine that cures cancer with cancer, and the Concavity's monthly death-and-overgrowth cycle; even Mario's failed teaching image is JOI's primal annulation figure (somersaults with one hand nailed down).

  • The "somersaults with one hand nailed to the ground" image (p. 570) is JOI's own origin-of-annulation figure from the Chill of Inspiration memoir (scene 099, p. 503) — Mario has absorbed and now retransmits his father's master image, unawares; Pemulis finds it gibberish.
  • n.238's source is the same anthology as scene 099's frame (n.208): The Chill of Inspiration: Spontaneous Reminiscences by Seventeen Pioneers of DT-Cycle Lithiumized Annular Fusion — and its Ch. 7 title ("...a Seedy-Looking Fellow That Publicly Lifted a Chair He Was Standing On...") points squarely at Lyle, who is behind the weight-room door in this very scene.
