Avril–Orin, and the parentage lattice (compact)
In plain terms: the Avril-Orin question and the family parentage lattice -- whether there was incest, whether Mario is really C.T.'s son, and whether Avril is a "devouring mother."
Where the text lands: an incest-shaped enmeshment is unresolved (and the harder abuse-claim is a stretch); Mario being C.T.'s son is the best-supported reading; the devouring-mother pattern is the best-supported reading as a thematic diagnosis. Among readers: a split leaning toward "something happened"; a near-consensus on Mario's parentage.
The enmeshment is pattern-rich but its one act-channel is hearsay (p. 791). Mario-equals-C.T. draws on C.T.'s own interior thought (pp. 451-452) and birth-timing arithmetic, capped below the top tier by the text's engineered hedge. Hal's paternity, notably, is not engineered as a puzzle the way Mario's is. See Wayne, the AFR & Avril.
