Summary

Pat's unscripted kindness — desperately addicted Henri can sleep on the rear office's Convertisofa this very night — forces Marathe into the full four-way calculus his masters never planned for: (1) accept and stay to verify whether the House's veiled U.H.I.D. resident is the Entertainment's performer; (2) roll out and phone Fortier that Ennet House may hold real cartridges (perhaps a duplicable Master or the F.L.Q.'s rumored anti-samizdat remedy) and the performer too; (3) phone Steeply's 24-hour line instead, cast his lot finally with O.N.A.N., and buy his skull-less, restenotic wife Gertraude golden-hooked medical care and a hidden American life; or (4) snap Pat's slim neck and summon whichever side directly. Woven through the options is this scene's most interior revelation: Marathe has "lost the belly for this type of work" — it was he who pushed the sharpened broomstick through the Antitoi's insides, and he vomited in the alley after, in secret. The decision dissolves into Ennet House's benign chaos: Johnette Foltz leans in to clock in, Pat assigns her to screen Clenette's E.T.A. donie-cartridges after lights-out ("No skin, no substances, light drinking only" — the possible samizdat headed for a staffer's Dream-Duty TP), and Pat translates donies, natives, and "E-T-A... just up the hill" for the politely inhaling spy.

What to notice

The intake chair works on the impostor: sitting where people confess, Marathe yields up — to the reader only — the truest first-step inventory in these pages: the lost stomach for the work, the broomstick his own, the vomiting afterward "under secrecy". The office built to extract honest self-accounting extracts one from the false applicant too; Pat simply isn't allowed to hear it. And her one misreading is accidentally exact: she takes his wheel-fidgeting for "the addicted struggle between desperation and denial" — wrong about the substance, perfectly right about the structure, since desperation (jump to Steeply, buy Gertraude her golden helmet) versus denial (keep riding both masters and call it timing) is precisely the struggle underway behind the veil. The deliberation's syntax is its own portrait: the options arrive in enormous or-stacked sentences that refuse to end, clause accreting on clause, because a period would amount to a decision — quadruple agency rendered as grammar. And notice the one datum the professional has nowhere to file: "It occurred to Marathe that this was a happy person." In a scene weighing four calculated futures, what actually disarms him — what makes the neck-snapping option "seem a sad choice" — is not tradecraft but undisguised, unsolicitous happiness across a desk.

Beats — page-by-page

  • p. 752: the trickiness — the Convertisofa offer; "no lines had been prepared by Fortier to defer this offer"; Pat reads his wheel-fidgeting as "the addicted struggle between desperation and denial"; the stay-vs.-alert-Fortier branch, including the possibility of "a duplicatable Master or the anti-samizdat remedy cartridge of F.L.Q.'s allegation" and returning "in squeaking force" for cartridges and performer both.
  • pp. 752-753: the Steeply branch — the 24-hour costless prefix, "placing bets on O.N.A.N. and against Fortier"; conveying "his restenotic wife and entertainment-hungry children down from St.-Remi d'Amherst's Convexity-ravaged wastes"; "high-income medical care for the heart- and head-difficulties of beloved Gertraude."
  • pp. 752-753: the fourth branch — tell her to look out behind for a large spider and snap her neck one-handed; Pat's finger-spire and her "respect and sympathy but not solicitude" make this "seem a sad choice."
  • p. 753: the confession-stratum — none of the old train-crossing comrades "sensed truly that Marathe has lost the belly for this type of work"; the manche à balai pushed through the Antitoi's insides; the secret vomiting in the alley; Gertraude imagined "with a helmet and hook of gold, breathing easily through expensive tubes"; the real variable: how long to keep working for dissemination before jumping; Fortier's implacable wrath at 'perdant son coeur' (n.314 → n.304) argues for waiting until Québec is evicted before revealing "his quadrupling for O.N.A.N., Marathe."
  • p. 753: Johnette Foltz leans in — "Clocking in, boss" / "Pisser"; the diaper-pin transpercé in her nostril; Mrs. Lopate's shed-people arranged; Janice "screwing out of here."
  • pp. 753-754: the donies — "Clenette H. brought some donie-cartridges down from E.T.A. this afternoon"; "The natives are restless"; McDade re-watching "that Korean thing"; screening protocol recited like catechism: "No skin, no substances, light drinking only"; "They're in the cabinet with the intakes"; "I'll watch them during Dream Duty, as many as there's time"; Marathe decides "firmly against the snapping of any necks upon this visit, because of bodies leaning with suddenness into the office unexpectedly."
  • p. 754: Pat de-tormenting orders (Emil and Wade vs. David K.); the glossary — donies = donated goods, natives = current residents ("we mean it as affectionate"), Johnette is living staff (n.315: Marathe's malentendu of 'live-in'), "Johnette's a keeper"; "E.T.A. is letters, E-T-A... a private school... just up the hill."
  • pp. 754-755: the working-house reveal ("Residents have a month to find work, normally") catches Marathe mid-inhale — the deep intake of veil noted by Pat; "Exhaling with care, Marathe gestured faintly as in But of course."

Endnotes

  • n.314 (p. 1062): "See Note 304 supra." — 'perdant son coeur' (losing one's heart) is the train-cult's term of ultimate disgrace, 'faire un Bernard Wayne'; the narrative note is covered at scene n304.
  • n.315 (p. 1062): "Marathe's malentendu of live-in." — glossing 'living staff.'

Themes in this scene

  • Surveillance and Disguise: the quadruple-agent calculus at maximum articulation — Fortier, Steeply, both, or neither; even his compulsive fake sniff has become a tell he can't source; the one operational certainty is produced by Ennet House's door-leaning informality (no necks snapped where torsos appear without warning).
  • Entertainment and the Self: the possible samizdat is now scheduled for casual staff screening after lights-out — the book's deadliest object processed through the House's gentlest routine; Gertraude's "entertainment-hungry children" tie even Marathe's family to the appetite.
  • Nationalism and O.N.A.N.: the betrayal economics laid bare — secession timing, Gentle's wrath, witness protection; Marathe's love-for-Gertraude motive finally given its full price list (cf. his mountainside doctrine that one must choose what one dies for).
  • Disability and Deformity: Gertraude — born skull-less, restenotic, helmet-and-golden-hook imagined — is the scene's gravitational center; Pat's "respect and sympathy but not solicitude" is exactly the distinction Fortier theorized (scene 145, p. 723), and it disarms Marathe.

Connections — backward & forward

Backward

  • Concludes the 149/151 Ennet House sequence; the donie-cartridges "in the cabinet with the intakes" close the loop on the embossed-smile cases Marathe saw there (scene 151, pp. 749-750) and give them a provenance: E.T.A., via Clenette — i.e., conceivably JOI's own stock from up the hill, feeding the Master-copy question (scenes 143/145/147; the burial in Avril's family plot per n.234).
  • The broomstick confession rewrites scene 097 (pp. 481-489, Lucien Antitoi's death by his own broom): the killer was Marathe, and he vomited after — recoloring every cool dossier sentence of scenes 145/147 and his "free to choose among emotions" credo (scene 149, p. 732).
  • n.302 (scene 145) is this scene's shadow: Fortier already plans to force Marathe to view the Entertainment, and harbors suspicions about the brothers killed at the jeux he oversaw — Marathe's wait-and-see timing is more dangerous than he knows; full train-cult context at scene n304.
  • Mrs. Lopate (the catatonic wheelchaired woman of scene 149, p. 730, here named) and David K. extend the House's roster of the damaged; Emil Minty and McDade as resident tormentors continue scenes 056/066.
  • "E-T-A... just up the hill": the geography that makes Ennet House the A.F.R.'s accidental skeleton key — performer, cartridges, and the Academy all within one canvass stop.

Forward

  • Gertraude named in main text here (pp. 752-753; 'Gertraud' at p. 529); the skull-less wife backstory expands in the bar scene where Marathe tells it to Kate Gompert — a stranger with no stake — at scene 156 (pp. 774-782).
  • Johnette's Dream Duty screening assignment is the device that puts the donated cartridges in play for the House (and for the Ennet House aftermath to come); Johnette continues from the NA-meeting and House-staff threads (scenes 100, 066).

Notable passages (4)

  • pp. 752-753: the Gertraude sentence ("...demanding hidden protection from Steeply and high-income medical care for the heart- and head-difficulties of beloved Gertraude") — Marathe's whole motive in one breath; the love/choice complex distilled.
  • p. 753: "none of them sensed truly that Marathe has lost the belly for this type of work... and later had vomited out into the alley under secrecy." — the broomstick confession; essential extraction, recolors the Antitoi raid.
  • p. 753: "Marathe pictured Gertraude with a helmet and hook of gold, breathing easily through expensive tubes." — tenderness in prosthetic gold; the book's strangest love-image.
  • pp. 753-754: the donie-screening exchange ("No skin, no substances, light drinking only") — lethal cartridge logistics as workplace banter; dramatic-irony summit of these scenes.
