A.F.R. thread

Les Assassins des Fauteuils Rollents — the Wheelchair Assassins — are the novel's Québécois terror cell: legless separatist fanatics who came up through a savage train-jumping cult and now hunt the lethal Entertainment as a weapon against O.N.A.N. This page is the plot spine of the organization, not of any one member — its origins in Le Jeu du Prochain Train, its founding and war-aims, its leadership (the murdered coordinator DuPlessis; the U.S.-cell chief Fortier; the honeytrap operative Luria P——), and the tangled YDAU operation that runs from a botched Brookline burglary to a man screaming inside a glass tumbler. Where a beat lives on a character's own page (Marathe's biography above all), it appears here only at organizational altitude and cross-refers rather than re-deriving.

The A.F.R.'s two defining open questions stay open here, as printed: whether the cartridge the cell finds is a duplicable Master (it is not — it is Read-Only, and where the true Master is buried is the endgame demand), and where the loyalty of their own best agent, Marathe, finally lands.

The A.F.R. is the novel's argument made flesh: if a people cannot say no to pleasure, you do not invade it — you hold up a mirror. The cell's whole history is that image at successive scales. It begins as a game in which miners' sons prove themselves by choosing, eyes open, the last viable instant before a train (1) — a cult of willed self-risk whose maimed veterans found an organization (2) that strikes at night, to a squeak, and whose first campaign is literal mirrors dragged across Interstate 87 so that northbound Americans die accelerating into their own high-beams (4). Everything afterward is the same operation at higher resolution. The Entertainment is the perfect mirror — "the device for extending O.N.A.N.'s self-destructing logic to its final conclusion" (11) — and the strategic theory behind the maximal war-aims (2, 3) is elegantly passive: disseminate it, and the U.S. is "struck down by its own inability to say 'Non' to fatal pleasures" (10). No shot fired that the victim does not pull.

For a cell this disciplined, the campaign runs on absurd contingency. The hunt opens with its coordinator dying under a burglar's gag — an "assassination" that was a head-cold plus Don Gately (5). The decapitation frees the A.F.R. to move unilaterally, and the trail it follows is pawn-shop trivia: a café-au-lait maker, a fatally interviewed burglar, a pain specialist, two hapless brothers and a whittled broom, "In-U-Tile" (9). The raid buys a shop full of cartridges and the November finding that breaks the operation's back: the secured Entertainment is Read-Only, not a Master (11). Alongside, the empirical program (12) — a student engineer pricing further viewings at one self-severed digit each, "the ninth digit of extremities had to come off as quickly and willingly as the second" — proves the weapon's pull is bottomless; what it cannot prove is that a duplicable Master exists anywhere. So the two-track doctrine (10) collapses to its harder branch: the auteur's circle, and ultimately his grave.

November tightens into dramatic irony played absolutely straight. The cell's best field-intelligence locates the veiled performer on the first canvass (14) — and the same agent, the same night, telephones the find to the other side, because the A.F.R.'s single greatest exposure has always been its own instrument (6, 14). The cartridges likeliest to matter sit unrecognized twice over: blank-reading barter tapes in Lucien's waste bag (9), and embossed-smile "donie-cartridges" in a charity cabinet at Ennet House, carried down the hill from the Incandenzas' own academy and queued for a staffer's after-lights-out screening, "No skin, no substances, light drinking only" (15). The book positions the apocalypse one casual play-button from a room of recovering addicts and lets no one in the cell see it.

The timeline ends where the book stops it, deliberately mid-swing. The mirror returns for the ambush of children (16) — "An old F.L.Q. trick," say the planners, though the record pins the original campaign on them (see Dating notes) — planned, provisioned, driven north into weather, never shown executed. Orin, honeytrapped by Luria P——'s operation (13), wakes under glass to the campaign compressed into one amplified sentence, "Where Is The Master Buried" (17), and answers with the book's most famous unresolved scream, "Do it to her!" — referent open, like everything terminal here. Two independent derivations of this chronology end at the same wall: no ambush, no exhumation, no dissemination, Marathe's final loyalty still "an even-numbered total" (6). The A.F.R.'s weapon never fires inside the book; the reader is left holding the mirror — which, on the evidence of events 4 and 16, was always the design.

  • A.F.R. name spelling (as printed): "Les Assassins des Fauteuils Rollents" (029, n039, n304) vs. "Fauteuils Roulents" (035) vs. the singular "fauteuil de rollent" (029, n037), and the game's own name-variants — n304's "La Culte du Prochain Train" / "le Jeu du Prochain Train" vs scene 149's "Le Culte du Prochain Train". One organization / one game; recorded, not fixed. (Carried from the Marathe timeline's name-ruling note.)
  • Event 5 (DuPlessis death dating): scene 016 dates the fatal burglary "Autumn — Year of Dairy Products from the American Heartland" (YDPAH, 2008), yet the 30 April YDAU (2009) desert dialogue treats DuPlessis's death as abrupt and recent ("has now passed away from life...   • Event 6 (loyalty count — the open crux, not a dating error): the text waffles between "tripling" and "quadrupling" (scene 031); n040 speaks of "the even-numbered total of his final loyalties." Marathe's true final loyalty is the thread's deliberate open crux — recorded as open per the fate/identity rule; any adjudication belongs to the theory pages.
  • Event 6 (Gertraude's coma duration): "fourteen months" (scene 088, the 30 Apr / 1 May desert night) vs. "almost one year" (scene 156, the 14 Nov bar conversation) — the later scene reports the shorter span, so the two figures cannot be reconciled by elapsed time in either direction; the anchor for the betrayal-arrangement's dating. Unreconciled, as printed. (Full detail on the Marathe timeline; carried here because it dates the A.F.R.-penetration arrangement.)
  • Desert-serial dating: per the archive's dating ruling, every installment of the Marathe/Steeply mountainside serial is the night of 30 April – 1 May YDAU (2009), regardless of where the catalog splices it — so events 7-8 (and the material feeding event 6) share one night despite their spread across the print sequence; not re-derived per-installment.
  • A.F.R. founding date (imprecise, as printed): n304 dates the Root Cult "at least a decade prior to Reconfiguration" and the A.F.R.'s grievance to "the newly subsidized Year of the Whopper" (2002) without pinning the cell's formation to a year; events 1-2 are placed by these relative markers only.
  • Mirror-trick attribution (events 4 and 16, as printed): scene 070 credits the highway-mirror campaign to a "then-unknown Québecois terrorist cell," which n112 names as the A.F.R., and n304 lists the mirrors "across odd-numbered United States highways" among the A.F.R.'s works; yet scene 163's planners call the same device "An old F.L.Q. trick." Both attributions recorded as written (a trick's provenance and a campaign's perpetrator may differ); neither resolved.
  • Master's existence and location (open — the hunt's object): the A.F.R. hold Read-Only copies only; the copy found in the Antitoi shop "was Read-Only" (147); whether a duplicable Master exists at all, and whether it is buried with the auteur, is exactly what "Where Is The Master Buried" (184) presumes and the book never confirms. Kept as printed; held open on the theory pages.
  • Luria naming (as printed): "Mlle. Luria Perec, of Lamartine, county L'Islet, Québec" in scene 029's parenthetical; "Luria P——" / "P———" in the operational scenes and apparatus (147, 163, 184, n268). One person; her ultimate allegiance rides the Tine loyalty question — open.
  • Broullîme spelling: "Broullîme" / "Brullîme" / Steeply's "Dr. Brullent" — one A.F.R. person per the archive's name rulings; recurs across scenes 038/088/145/147/163.
