U.S.O.U.S.
The United States Office of Unspecified Services is the novel's American counter-intelligence apparatus — Rodney Tine's shadow-agency, the security spine of the continental super-state O.N.A.N., known to the Québécois Separatist Left as B.S.S. ("Bureau des Services sans Spécificité"). This page is the plot spine of the organization hunting the lethal Entertainment (the "samizdat"): its founding role in the Reconfiguration, its scramble to learn what the cartridge is and where a copyable Master might be, its deep-cover field operations (Hugh Steeply's grotesque woman-journalist disguise and the desert double-agent game with the A.F.R.'s Marathe), and its surveillance of the dead filmmaker's family — Orin, and finally the veiled performer Joelle. Where a beat lives on a character's own page (Marathe's biography, Steeply's, Tine's, Joelle's) or on the A.F.R.'s, it appears here only at organizational altitude and cross-refers rather than re-deriving.
The thread's open questions stay open here, as printed: whether a finished Master exists at all and where it lies (Joelle's "educated bet" puts it in the grave, inside the Concavity); how much of Marathe's "even-numbered total of final loyalties" the Office controls versus is being played by; and whether its own Chief "doubles" or "triples" for love of Luria Perec.

Arc
The Office of Unspecified Services guards an order it built. Its Chief, Rodney "the God" Tine, is the acknowledged architect of the Reconfiguration — the territory-cession that made O.N.A.N. and the Concavity — and the old alphabet agencies (N.S.A., C.I.A., D.E.A., and the rest) have been swallowed whole "into the ambit" of his Office (2), with an inner division so refined it is defined by double negation: the Anti-Anti-O.N.A.N. Activities' Agency, whose province is "the U.S.'s Canadian Problem" (3). And the Office has institutional memory for exactly the weapon now aimed at it: it is heir to the services that once went in with guns drawn to bury the Brandon p-terminal program, the Canadian experiment that proved ordinary, "chillingly average" young people will trample each other for the lever that delivers "the sum of all possible pleasures" (1). When the samizdat starts popping up — Berkeley, New Iberia, Tempe, then the Boston attaché and his houseful of pithed responders (5, 7) — the Office is not learning something new; it is watching the cage it once locked come open in optical form.
Its methods are personae and interfaces. B.S.S. field doctrine casts its finest operatives into deliberately grotesque disguises — men as women, the healthy as deformed, "sometimes to actually suffer actual deformity" (11) — and Hugh Steeply, career technical interviewer (13), spends the thread inside "Helen Steeply," a 1.93-meter Moment journalist with a manufactured c.v. and one planted clip about a stolen artificial heart (14). The Office's deepest penetration is the desert channel: one mountainside night with Rémy Marathe, the A.F.R. defector who is "only pretending only to pretend" to betray, whose handlers know more than his cell believes and less than they'd like (12). But the loyalty architecture is unstable at every level: the Office's own Chief loves Luria Perec, DuPlessis's double-amanuensis, and no one can say whether Tine doubles or triples (4); Steeply withholds from his own superiors what Fortier knows (12); and the Office's best intelligence — that the A.F.R.'s agenda is pure malice — may itself be a plant (12). The counter-espionage apparatus is a hall of the same mirrors the enemy kills with.
What the Office actually knows, it pays for. Nobody has the Master — the copyable original allegedly loosed by the burglary that killed DuPlessis — while every cell holds Read-Onlys and the rumored "anti"-Entertainment may be nothing but a bargaining chip (6). Flatto's I/O teams run "24-dash-7" toward conditions for nonlethal viewing, chasing the holography theory down the dead auteur's optics (8); forensics on mailers and postal codes triangulate the source to the north border, Boston/New Bedford and the desert Southwest (10) — which is why Tine stands at a Boston window and Steeply teeters on Tucson shale. And the proof of the thing's power is internal: an intern with a stolen clearance card, and then Hank Hoyne, twenty-year man and iron-willed diabetic, tube-fed in four-point restraints, his eyes not so much "empty of intent" as "pulled apart in different directions" (9). The Office does not need Marathe's warnings; it has a ward.
November is the operation's convergence and its limit. The soft-profile cover finally mines the Incandenzas: Orin, who catalogues her probes himself — "Himself killing himself, you and Joelle, Himself and Joelle [...] nonexistent films" (15) — and Marlon Bain, whose hedged letters surface the Volvo-window "word" and the terminal film that was "driving Dr. Inc insane" (16). At E.T.A. the operative sits in plain sight in the bleachers and is politely walled off from "the samizdat's director's other son" by a school built, its staff tells her to her face, to protect kids from exactly her (17). Tine coordinates from the State House Annex while, below his window-line, the other side's wheelchairs scoop up the WYYY engineer — the two hunts for the same veiled woman crossing in one gray vista (18) — and the Office's public arm green-lights a crossed-eyed burro to teach children to cut the power (19). Then the payoff: Steeply intercepts Joelle van Dyne outside St. E.'s and, in the thread's last interview, the U.S. government is told where its quarry lies — if it exists at all, the Master was "buried with him," and the grave sits in the annulation-zone: "It's not even your territory" (20). The spine ends exactly where the Office's reach does. Every question it opened stays open — Tine's love, Marathe's even-numbered loyalties, the Master's very existence — and the security organ of the continental order is left holding a map on which the one decisive object lies inside the territory its own architect gave away (2, 20).
Timeline (20 events)
Key to the timeline
★ marks a pivotal event — one that carries this thread's arc. Unmarked events add texture around it.
Where an event says how it is known, that basis is one of: narrated (the narration states it), recalled (a character's own memory), reported (secondhand or testimony), claimed (asserted by someone with a stake), or disputed (conflicting versions). Conflicting details are quoted as the book has them rather than resolved.
Dating notes (apparatus)
Consolidated unresolved date/identity puzzles; as printed throughout. Union of both blind derivations plus this audit's raw-verified additions; event refs use the merged numbering.
- Desert-serial dating (1, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13): per the archive's dating ruling, every installment of the Marathe/Steeply mountainside serial is the single night of 30 April - 1 May YDAU (2009), regardless of where the catalog splices it; scene 103 calls it their "sixth or seventh" meeting, so the channel long predates the night. The p-terminal (1), Master-inventory (6), technical-interview, deep-cover, Marathe-loyalty, and testing/casualty material are all narrated inside this one night and are placed here by topic, not re-derived per-installment.
- Event 4 (Luria's name/surname, as printed): scene 029 gives "Mlle. Luria Perec, of Lamartine, county L'Islet, Québec"; elsewhere the operative is "Luria P——." One person per the archive's name rulings; recorded, not fixed.
- Event 4 / Event 12 (the loyalty-count language — the open crux, not a dating error): the text waffles between "tripling" and "quadrupling" for Marathe (scene 031), and n040 speaks of "the even-numbered total of his final loyalties"; the same double/triple ambiguity attaches to Tine's own loyalty via Luria (scenes 029/031/035). Both are recorded open per the fate/identity rule; any adjudication belongs to the theory pages. Whether O.U.S. controls Marathe or is being played by Fortier (who may have "deliberately allowed Marathe to pass along" the agenda, n302) is left open.
- Event 6 (DuPlessis death dating — cross-thread clash, as printed): the 30 Apr YDAU interface treats the death as recent ("abruptly M. DuPlessis has now passed away," 031); the A.F.R. page dates the burglary-death Autumn YDPAH per scene 016, with its own recorded clash (the AFR thread (5) and Dating notes). Recorded on both pages, not harmonized. The A.F.R.'s recovery of a Master from the burglary stays "alleged" (098) — open.
- Event 6 / Event 8 (the Read-Only inventory, as printed clash): scene 098 has Steeply's "We have more than one. Copies." and Marathe's gloss "Confiscated from razzles of Berkeley, Boston"; scene 107 states "The Berkeley cartridge had vanished from an S.F.P.D. Evidence Room" and "The Tempe and New Iberia cartridges are in custody, vaulted." Which copies the Office actually holds is recorded as written, not reconciled.
- Event 6 / Event 20 (the anti-Entertainment rumor, open): Steeply raises the rumored "anti"-Entertainment/antidote as possibly an A.F.R./F.L.Q. bargaining "chip" on 30 April (038; Marathe: "no evidence except craziness of rumors"); Joelle tells Steeply ?/20 Nov that JOI "never talked about an anti-version or antidote" even in jokes (178). Whether an anti-film exists is left open; the entertainment-contents crux owns it.
- Event 5 (samizdat-emergency onset, imprecise): scene 107 dates O.U.S.'s first involvement to "two summers past" (when the head of D.E.A. and the Chair of the Academy of D.A.S. came to the Office) without a firm year; the cross-country "popping up" has no absolute stamps. Placed by the relative marker only.
- Event 7 (Boston razzle dating + toll, as printed): the attaché massacre is "late last spring" YDAU (scene 107); the attaché scene-cluster's own dateline is 1 April YDAU (carried on medical-attache); the razzle is treated as recent on the 30 April mountainside (scene 029). The toll is "Upwards of twenty" (Steeply) vs. "twenty-three human beings lost for all time" — unreconciled within the one scene. (The razzle's A.F.R.-side tension is carried on the AFR thread (7).)
- Event 7 (the widow's watch-list, as printed): "This wife herself a Québecer, Rémy, from L'Islet county—Chief Tine says three years spent on Ottawa's 'Personnes Qui On Doit' list" (029) — the three years attaches to the auteur's widow, not to Luria (both are L'Islet-county Québecers; the coincidence is the text's). The victim-widow "involvement" is doubly hedged ("possible indications of the victim's prior possible involvement") — recorded as written. See the Avril timeline.
- Event 11 (persona duration, as printed): Steeply's prior "Negro"/"Haitian" persona is "almost one year" (scene 038) — a narrated duration without an absolute anchor.
- Event 14 (the cover-article's JOI triangulation): the 10 Aug YDAU article header stamps itself "FOUR YEARS AFTER" JOI's microwave suicide (045) — a datum consistent with the YTSDB death-year triangulation but stated from the cover-persona's fictional apparatus; as printed, year-name mapping held with the archive's dating rulings.
- Events 15-17 (Orin/E.T.A. operation window): the interview series and Bain correspondence are datelined only "November Y.D.A.U." (n234, n269, scene 128); scene 113's drive to Sky Harbor is 7 Nov (Orin's own probe-list enumeration is the 5-Nov phone call, scene 064); the E.T.A. match surveillance is 11 Nov (scenes 125/127). No finer stamps tie the transcript fragments to specific days.
- Event 16 (the Volvo "word," open): the fogged-window word itself is never given in-range — "all I am given is that O. reports" (n269); its content and its "conjugal pall" are hearsay-at-two-removes, as printed. (Cross-thread: the word is elsewhere identified with Avril's infidelity discovery; not asserted here.)
- Event 18 (pond-draining date): "always... a weekday c. mid-November" (scene 121) — a seasonal marker, not a fixed date; placed mid-Nov YDAU. The overlapping A.F.R. engineer-snatch's own dating (prob. 12-14 Nov) is carried on the AFR thread (12).
- Event 20 (dating + the Master's location, open): scenes 176/178 are placed "?/20 Nov YDAU" (the archive's dating). Joelle's claim that the Master is buried with JOI in the Concavity is her "educated bet" from what JOI told her (she "never saw his fucking will"); whether a finished Master exists at all is left open — as printed. This is the thread's endgame crux and belongs to the entertainment-contents and Master-copy crux pages, recorded here only. See Joelle's timeline (event 34).
- Steeply cover-name spelling (as printed): "Helen Steeply" (scenes 045/061/113/125/127) vs. Bain's "Ms. Helen Steepley" and the drifting "Steeples/Steeley/Starkly/Starksaddle/Bainbridge" jibes, all in n269 — Bain deliberately mangles the name; one operative, recorded not fixed.
