• What: The first boy ever to approach Joelle "in a male-female way" was a drunk All-Kentucky lineman at a Shiny Prize Biting Shoats Boosters cookout, who confessed the whole team's paralyzing horror of her prettiness (until then she'd thought her own personal Daddy was discouraging dates). The second was Orin Incandenza. In scene 068's telling: after weeks of wordless mutual display (his coffin-corner punts, her twirling), Joelle approaches Orin at a Columbus Day function with a sousaphone-extracted football, asking him to autograph it for her Own Personal Daddy; Orin confesses the One Soul crowd-roar to her; the romance begins with no promises — "It was all for free."
