• What: Among Gately's visitor parade, a figure whose "veil was running a cold washcloth over his face" (Joelle — or possibly a nurse, per Gately's fevered uncertainty) bathes him; later Joelle just sits at the bedside, silent, the veil's blankness frightening him. Gately also keeps involuntarily imagining Joelle dressed as Madame Psychosis eating a peach in a plain chair, watching St. E.'s rooftop crucifix out the window (the scene says "the 3-Woman room" — as printed; her actual room is the 5-Woman).
