A narratorial footnote pins the cultural inheritance: Joelle "was aculturated in a part of the U.S.A. where verbal attitudes toward black people are dated and unconsciously derisive," her clumsy usage ("colored and so on") being her "doing pretty much the best she can" — and she is still "a paragon of racial sensitivity compared to the sort of culture Don Gately was conditioned in" (n293 p. 1054).
