• What: Torn awake by the dental nightmare, Joelle compulsively cleans the 5-Woman room with Kleenex and stale water — cleaning as recovery meditation, no longer cocaine ritual. She dusts all five bedside tables, wiping careful rings around objects she isn't allowed to touch, nervous that Kate Gompert (in fact concussed across the river) will walk in and find her in kerchief and veil. Don Gately is the named reason the Incandenzas are "bubbling up" — she had barely thought consciously of any Incandenza for four years before him.
