Emil Minty
Emil Minty is Ennet House Drug and Alcohol Recovery House's resident hard case: "a hard-core smack-addict punk here for reasons nobody can quite yet pin down," on the streets since he was about sixteen by Gately's read, with an orange mohawk growing out brown over a shaved skull, combat boots propped on the standing ashtrays, and the sooty street-worn complexion that makes him look, in Gately's word, "upholstered." His body is a small archive of a rough life: a DORIS tattoo in red-dripping Gothic script below the left breast ("who yes apparently did love once"), a palsied amateur swastika with a misspelled racist caption on a left biceps the House heartily encourages him to keep covered, and — per the endnotes' pharmacology — a cocaine-triggered ballism so violent he snorted Bing exactly once, which goes some way toward explaining why his Substance is heroin. Geoffrey Day, stuck beside him at a meeting, files him as "positively redolent." He calls his own penis "Fang."
His residency is a slow accumulation of write-ups, usually in tandem with Wade McDade. By 4 November "the pathetic harassments of Minty and McDade" are already a standing grievance in a fork-impaled resident's complaint to Pat. He ends a living-room recovery-cliché debate with "Hows about the both of you shut the fuck up." On the night of the Lenz brawl he never throws a punch: he runs his nightly porch-smoke curfew rebellion, watches the fight from the back porch, shouts "Airdaddy!", coaches Yolanda W. (with McDade) to "use the spike heel," advises Lenz that a gunshot man "can't go in no E.R." — and when it is over, the narration notes, "Everybody except Lenz and Minty looks unwell." Violence agrees with him. Pat is soon asking Staff to "keep Emil and Wade from tormenting David K."; then, in a single twelve-hour span while Gately lies shot in the hospital, he is written up for lifting one of the vanished Hester Thrale's undergarments from her bag on the porch and (with Diehl) for leaving a gag-arrow on the catatonic lady's head all day — leaving him "just one more offense away from getting the Shoe," with Calvin Thrust polishing his sharpest shoe's tip "in hopes." His last appearance doubles down: McDade confides at Gately's bedside that he and Minty are having engraved-looking invitations printed to lure Unit #3's incoming agoraphobics out to a big crowded party, and Gately now knows for sure it was the two of them who put the HELP WANTED sign under the window of the woman who shouts for Help.
One thing this page deliberately does not do: merge Minty with "yrstruly," the first-person narrator of the Poor Tony/C street nightmare (scene 040), or with the drug-world "Emil" who marks Poor Tony for de-mapping (scene 069). Minty is at Ennet House "for reasons nobody can quite yet pin down," and the book keeps it that way for his entire residency. Every other hard-luck resident gets an etiology — Glynn his bricks, Green his Mildred Bonk, Thrale her Borderline — but Minty's stays blank. What the House can read, it reads off his surfaces: the mohawk growing out, the dermal soot of a decade outdoors, a DORIS who proves he "did love once," a swastika that has to be kept covered as a condition of shelter. The one interior fact the book supplies is negative and chemical — a ballism that slammed the door on cocaine and left him smack's. He is a man legible only as residue.
What he does, as opposed to what he is, is remarkably consistent: he tests every soft surface in reach. The targets of the Minty/McDade harassment economy are the House's least defended people — the fastidious complainer, the crab-scuttling David K., the catatonic lady in the wheelchair, the agoraphobics who cannot come outside, the unseen woman whose only utterance is Help. The gag-arrow and the HELP WANTED sign are the same joke: a printed caption pinned to someone who cannot remove it. And fight night shows the disposition underneath the jokes. Minty performs rebellion in its pettiest denomination (the nightly extra cigarette on the porch), watches real violence from the back porch with professional interest, coaches it ("use the spike heel"), knows its street logistics ("He can't go in no E.R. with a gunshot"), and is one of exactly two people in the House whom the carnage leaves looking well. The line "Everybody except Lenz and Minty looks unwell" is the closest the text comes to stating his diagnosis: whatever recovery is supposed to restore, Minty's version was never disturbed by the sight of harm.
His arc, such as it is, is actuarial: a complaint, a sanction, two write-ups in twelve hours, one offense from the Shoe, and a next prank already at the printer's when the record ends. The book declines to expel him and declines to explain him — and hovering over the whole file is the question this page deliberately leaves open: whether the unkillable street voice of the yrstruly section, with its Emil-shaped hole, belongs to this same man. If it does, the House's illegible punk carries one of the novel's most harrowing narrations; if it does not, he remains what Gately sees — a closed surface in combat boots, warming its hands at other people's misfortune. The text, as it stands, lets you pin down neither — which is just what the portrait line promised.

- Scene 040 (24/25 Dec YDPAH): the first-person "yrstruly" street narrative (Poor Tony, C, the Dr. Wo/Bobby-C catastrophe). Its body contains zero "Minty"/"Emil" strings; the "yrstruly = Emil Minty" tag attached to it in this archive's cataloging is an identification of the narrator — the disputed claim itself, recorded as a label, not text. Nothing from (scene 040) is an Emil Minty event on this page.
- Scene 069 (14 Nov YDAU, Poor Tony 3rd-POV): a bare "Emil" — no surname — who "still had him marked for de-mapping as a consequence of that horrid thing with Wo and Bobby C last winter" and who "simply dematerialized from the street-scene." Making this a Minty event requires the unstated bare-Emil = Emil Minty identification, and its content is the yrstruly-narrative complex itself — so it stays outside the firewall. (Noted honestly: "dematerialized from the street-scene" is consistent with, though far from probative of, a street Emil who has gone inside somewhere like a halfway house — part of why the question is live. It stays open pending a ruling.)
- Event 2's speaker is an inference, held loosely. The 052 transcript never names the fork-impaled complainant. The complaint's bashing framing ("I can get bashed back at the Fenway") and scene 074's Morris Hanley "his left hand still bandaged" jointly support a Hanley identification; the event asserts only what the transcript says. The attacker is bare "Nell" in the transcript — read as Nell Gunther by House context, low-risk, flagged.
- Event 3's date is adjudicated, not headed. Scene 066 carries a "? Nov YDAU" header; the archive's chronology assigns Fri 6 Nov (internal anchors: Gately four months on Staff, Day newly arrived). The scene itself anchors the Interdependence-Day weekend (Foltz away at a Hartford NA convention "for the long Interdependence Day weekend," p. 277); the specific day comes from the chronology.
- n090 carries its own dateline — the interface-hours heading runs "up to about 2329h., Wednesday 11 November Y.D.A.U." The endnote is easily misread as undated; the redolent-"Emil M." datum in the portrait in fact rides a datable 11 Nov relay of Day's account. Carried as standing texture with the date noted here.
- Event 6's "Emil" is a first-name-only reference. Identified as Minty on the standing Emil/Wade (Minty/McDade) pairing attested at 052, 120, and 169, plus 161's independent torment pattern. Inference-flagged, high confidence. The instruction's speaker is "The woman with authority" in Marathe's register — Pat by the scene's frame, never named in-scene; addressee Johnette is named. David K. is glossed from scene 161 (the ATHSCME junior executive limbo-locked into a crab-scuttle), not from 153's own text.
- Event 7's Thrale context: the scene’s own text supplies the discharged-possessions frame: "her stuff's been duly bagged and is on the porch," and "Discharged residents' bagged possessions stay on the porch for three days" — Gately even calculates the present date from that rule. The genuine nuance is only that Thrale was never formally Discharged — she "disappeared sometime during the freakas and never came back" ("freakas" as printed) — so the rule reaches her bag via the House's processing of a vanished resident's stuff.
- Event 8's date rides the hospital-serial adjudication (prob. Thu 19 Nov), not the scene's "? Nov" header; its placement after event 7 is also arc-order (the invitations extend the write-up pattern). If the hospital serial moves, event 8 moves with it.
- As-printed ledger: the 056 tattoo caption (misspelled slur, DFW's characterization device — quoted exactly, never paraphrased into corrected spelling); "freakas" (161).
- Name forms: "Emil Minty," "Minty," "Emil M." (n090), bare "Emil" (153, paired with Wade), "'Fang'" (his cognomen for his Unit, per Day's journal). The bare "Emil" of scene 069 is NOT identified with him on this page (crux, above).
