What: On the Davis Square platform a courteous older black gentleman asks about the veil (in-ter-es-ted in four syllables, which she, from Kentucky, enjoys); she engages with him completely — extremely rare — and shows her laminated U.H.I.D. membership card, which carries the Union's Churchill founding legend (B.S. 1940, London: Churchill's insult to the cross-eyed, palate-clefted foundress — she would "tomorrow still be hideously and improbably deformed") in type so tiny the card looks "somehow both blank and defaced" (digest phrasing, pp. 226-227).
