Summary
The U.S. government's-eye history of the Entertainment, framed by the one blackmailable fact about Rodney Tine, Chief of Unspecified Services: he has measured his penis every morning since age twelve, with a special metric ruler (plus a telescoping travel model, plus a disguised charting notebook). The samizdat's tally of the lost is tabulated — nineteen at the Berkeley film-scholar's home (the scholar and companion, plus "seventeen police, paramedics, and teleputer-technicians in all") before someone thought to cut the power, two-thirds of an avant-garde festival audience at Tempe, the Boston attaché cluster, D.E.A. researchers, penal-system "volunteer" test subjects — all left docile, continent, but "pithed," with the mental energies of a moth. A retarded Leavenworth Lance Corporal under electrodes manages the only content report before succumbing: the film opens with a high-quality shot of a veiled woman in a revolving door whose veil billows at the sight of someone. Tine's staff christen it "the samizdat"; forensic tracing (postal codes, mailers, the Berkeley copy stolen from an evidence room leaving flannel fibers) points to dissemination along the U.S. north border — the possible Canadian connection being what brings Tine, his retinue, and his ruler to metro Boston.
What to notice
The dossier is framed by the ruler: it opens the scene, resurfaces mid-briefing as the disguised charting notebook, and the page's last words are "his retinue, and his ruler" — a report on a machine of total compulsion that keeps getting interrupted by its narrator's own small one, structure as diagnosis (the measuring itself rendered in dossier shorthand: "like clockwork; has since twelve; still does"). Watch the Berkeley sentence swallow its responders — two cops, then six, then the watch sergeant and partner — list-grammar enacting the widening circle, until the fix arrives at janitorial altitude: "somebody to think to go around back and kill the Berkeley home's power". Twice in one page the only working defense against the terminal Entertainment is cutting the power — the anonymous someone out back, the "level-headed custodian" at Tempe — while the whole security establishment can do nothing but vault cartridges and count the pithed. Seeing costs everything: intelligence, discipline, and near-lethal voltage all fail, and the one content report is bought with the few seconds a mind with less to lose can spare. Even the instruments come back empty — "unexceptional wave-activity", no hypnosis, no dopamine surge: a pleasure that leaves no signature. The scene's richest irony is distributed to the reader alone: "somebody the sight of whom makes her veil billow" means nothing to Tine's staff, but a finished reader has already met the woman in the veil. And the dossier voice permits itself exactly one wink, right at the acronym pile-up of the Anti-Anti-O.N.A.N. agency: "So to speak."
Beats
- p. ~548: EARLY NOVEMBER YDAU header; the ruler, the daily A.M. measurement, the travelling model; Gentle has no N.S.A. as such [n.228]; "two summers past" the D.E.A. and Academy heads come hat-twidgelling to Unspecified Services.
- p. ~548: the Berkeley cascade — scholar and companion, then two cops, then six, then the watch sergeant and partner ("seventeen police, paramedics, and teleputer-technicians in all"; nineteen counting the two civilians) before the power was killed from outside; New Iberia LA; Tempe's Entertainment Studies amphitheater (a "level-headed custodian" kills the grid); Gentle apprised only after the diplomatically immune attaché "and a dozen incidentals" in Boston "late last spring."
- p. ~548: the wards — "Docile and continent but blank, as if on some deep reptile-brain level pithed"; the C.D.C. diagnostician's moth comparison; Tine has toured a ward.
- p. ~549: the Berkeley cartridge vanishes from an S.F.P.D. Evidence Room — electron microscopy finds flannel fibers; D.E.A. loses four researchers and a consultant to viewing attempts; "the strongest possible language" needed to keep a certain Famous Crooner from a personal review; one of three Academy members mailed unlabelled copies "now needed a receptacle under his chin at all times."
- p. ~549: the Leavenworth Lance Corporal's report under near-lethal voltage: the veiled woman in the revolving doors, the billowing veil — then nothing could divert him; Tine's staff sift dozens of entries and pick "the samizdat"; P.E.T. scans show unexceptional wave-activity — not hypnosis, not dopamine-surge.
- pp. ~549-550: matrix-tracing without viewing (postal induction, e-microscopy of the brown mailers, chromatography, "maddening interviews") places dissemination on the U.S. north border, hubs metro Boston/New Bedford and/or the desert Southwest; the Canadian Problem is A.A.O.A.A.'s province [n.229]; hence Tine in Boston — "his retinue, and his ruler."
Themes in this scene
- Entertainment and the Self: the institutional ledger of the Entertainment's victims — "lives' meanings... collapsed to such a narrow focus that no other activity or connection could hold their attention" — the pleasure-death rendered in casualty-report prose; "the strongest possible language" is needed to keep even the President from a personal review of the thing's qualities.
- Nationalism and O.N.A.N.: the samizdat as national-security crisis; Gentle's vanity nearly its next casualty; the north-border tracing makes the Concavity politics and the Entertainment one plot for the first time at the federal level.
- Surveillance and Disguise: Tine's ruler — the surveillance state's chief is himself a dossier of one blackmailable compulsion; the charting notebook "could look like almost anything statistical at all" is disguise-craft applied to the self.
- Film and Optics: the only seen frames — a veiled woman, a revolving door, a billowing veil — pure JOI lens-and-motion imagery; the film kills precisely as cinema, through the eye.
Connections
Backward
- The attaché cluster = scenes 007/011/014/025/028 (the medical attaché's recliner and the room that fills); "a dozen incidentals" is that thread's tally of the lost as of spring.
- Marathe/Steeply's serial discusses the same dossier from the other side: Master vs. read-only copies and dissemination (scene 098, pp. 489-491), p-terminal lever-rats (scene 096), B.S.S. test casualties incl. Hank Hoyne (scene 101, pp. 507-508) — the Leavenworth "volunteers" are the U.S. mirror of Fortier's victim-testing.
- Flannel fibers in the S.F.P.D. evidence room: a planted Canadian signature (lumberjack flannel) or genuine A.F.R. tradecraft — either way it feeds the Canadian-attribution machinery Steeply's A.A.O.A.A. runs (n.229 notes Steeply's salary routes through this very division).
- Tine's ruler/penis-chart connects to Tine's affair with Luria Perec and the double-agent question (scenes 029ff, 035; the Luria→Tine transmission thread) — the one blackmailable thing, held by whom?
- The "strongest possible language" restraining Gentle echoes Gentle's infantile vanity in Mario's ONANtiad pageant (scenes 081ff); the Crooner who Cleaned Up America almost undone by wanting to watch.
- The custodians/level-headed-janitor motif (Tempe) rhymes with E.T.A.'s Kenkle and Brandt and the novel's quiet competence of maintenance staff.
Forward
- The veiled woman in the revolving doors is Joelle van Dyne — read against scene 104 (the same morning-ish stretch of text, her veil doctrine) and her own production memories (pp. 938-940); the revolving door recurs in the Entertainment descriptions throughout.
Endnotes (digested)
- n.228 (p. 1036): the N.S.A., A.T.F., D.E.A., C.I.A., O.N.R., and Secret Service have all been absorbed into the Office of Unspecified Services — Gentle's whole security state is one unaccountable ambit.
- n.229 (p. 1037): the A.A.O.A.A. — "Unspecified Services' most elite and least specific division" — pays Steeply's salary on his current field assignment, routed through a "Foundation for Continental Freedom" one "fervently hopes is a shell/dummy."
Notable passages
- p. ~548: "Docile and continent but blank, as if on some deep reptile-brain level pithed" — the canonical clinical description of Entertainment victims; anchor passage for entertainment-self.
- p. ~549: the Lance Corporal's report — "a veiled woman going through a large building's revolving doors... somebody the sight of whom makes her veil billow" — the only eyewitness description of the Entertainment's opening; essential extraction.
- p. ~549: "Tine's staff had sifted through dozens of entries before deciding... 'the samizdat.'" — bureaucratic naming as black comedy.
- p. ~548: the ruler sentences — "has since twelve; still does" — Wallace characterizing an entire psyche in a habit.
