the I.-Day-Eve call: 'You sound ground down'
‘I hate losing the temper.’ ‘You don’t sound good, Hallie. You sound ground down.’
Context
Two more breaches, in a call conducted almost entirely in fraternal armor. After Hal's cruelest truth-telling, the brothers touch by accident: Hal's flat "I'm sorry, O. I apologize… I hate losing the temper," and Orin's un-strategized noticing, "You sound ground down" — a moment of real perception from the compulsive Strategist, offered for nothing. The whole 66K call is itself the largest breach: Orin compulsively phoning the brother he hasn't seen in four years under cover of Strategy feedback and enlisting a "co-ponderer," a need he can't admit conducted as a favor he's pretending to do. The sincerity is all in the pretext — the reaching-out disguised as a consultation, feeling smuggled inside an errand.
