Orin builds cover identities to work his targets exactly as the agencies build them to work him. "Speedy Seduction Strategy Number 7" is a full false persona — a wedding band and an invented, adored wife, performed with rehearsed "flickers of pain and conflict" so the Subject will draw out his "involuntary" attraction — a legend with a humanizing backstory, kin to Steeply's own novelistic CV. Strategy 4 runs the same craft in a different costume (a lapsed Jesuit with "the breviary and rented collar"). Hal names the mechanism precisely: "It's like you're inventing somebody you love just to seduce somebody else into helping you betray her." The seducer and the spies are in the same business — manufacturing a self to get inside someone's guard.
