• What: Hal takes Orin's second call while "the bad ankle soaking in a janitor-pail of dissolved Epsom salts, looking through one of Mario's old Hush Puppy shoeboxes of letters and snapshots." He serves as Orin's lexical corrector (fixing "seraphic," "lascivious," "mesmerized," "proviso") and moral objector to the "Speedy Seduction Strategy" calls, while Orin covertly fishes about Québec Separatism / the samizdat (Steeply-driven; the call is cut just as Orin is about to raise "this samizdat-word"). Two Hal-bio beats: he attributes his chronic caries to genetics — "The caries are Himself's legacy" — and, mid-call, reports "I can feel that feeling of my body starting to feed on itself" as Orin observes "You sound good [sic]… You sound ground down." A withdrawal-adjacent depletion the day before I-Day (Pemulis waits to share the ritual I-Day-Eve duBois; the call is cut when Pemulis flips the phone's power toggle).
