• When: UNDATED — the Academy is "some ten years" old as of YDAU (063); erected "when Mario was nine and Hallie eight and Orin seventeen and in his one E.T.A. year" (071); Schtitt is in his "whole nine years at E.T.A." (026)
• What: Dr. James O. Incandenza — optics scientist, M.I.T. serve-and-volleyer, "A.E.C.-optics man" turned filmmaker — founds E.T.A. atop a big abrupt Enfield hill whose crown is balded and shaved flat, and installs himself as Headmaster. At the founding he woos Head Coach/Athletic Director Gerhardt Schtitt "or bust" — recruited off a Nick Bollettieri camp (the riding-crop resignation) on the strength of a B.S. 1989 U.S.T.A.-convention meeting of tennis minds, JOI drawn to Schtitt's approach to the game "more like a pure mathematician than a technician." The physical plant rises with the family's third and final home (Headmaster's House) at the grounds' northern rear; the founder's Latin motto is hung in the locker room. Lyle the weight-room guru "supposedly went way back with Dr. Incandenza, the Academy's founder" (039). The founder also persists inside the institution as mythos and endowment: his "final lasting contribution to state science" — the annulation-cycle optics he designed "after he quit designing neutron-diffusion reflectors for Defense" ("Like an optical glove-box. The ultimate prophylactic.") — is enshrined in "the coprolite plaque in Tavis's office" from the A.E.C., and his optics fortune underwrites the whole plant ("You wouldn't even fucking be here without Inc's Da," Pemulis instructs a Little Buddy).
