Context
Setup for the tunnel lecture: the E.T.A. science curriculum runs all the way up to annular cycles, and poor Doucette's brain simply refuses the concept — annulation as the abstraction the mind "recoils" from (p. 570). The book teasing its own central idea as the thing nobody can hold.
