Tech thread

The technology thread is the media-and-energy history of the O.N.A.N. world: how a filmmaker-physicist's optics and the collapse of broadcast television together produced the era the whole novel lives in. This page is the plot spine of the technology itself, not of any character. It runs two braided tracks. The media track: the death of the Big Four networks under the cable wars and Viney & Veals's fatally potent ads; the rise of Noreen Lace-Forché's InterLace TelEntertainment, whose teleputers ("TPs"), Read-Only cartridges, and "spontaneous" fiber-optic pulses replaced network TV and turned North America into "an entertainment-market of sofas and eyes"; and the boom-and-bust of videophony, the era's own comic parable of self-defeating tech. The energy/optics track: James O. Incandenza's gamma-refractive lenses and holographic conversions feeding cold annular fusion, the poison-eating reactor that makes and sustains the Great Concavity.

Both tracks matter to the plot because both are exactly what the lethal Entertainment exploits: the Read-Only architecture makes the samizdat's Master a rare, recognizable, huntable physical object, and the total pulse-grid has one low-tech seam — ordinary posted mail — through which the fatal cartridge slips. Where the Entertainment-as-artifact overlaps (the anonymous cartridge, the buried Master, JOI's filmmaking), this page stays at the altitude of the delivery and energy infrastructure and cross-refers to the samizdat and jim-art-ent threads rather than re-deriving. The thread's open questions stay open here, as printed: the media history has no absolute dates (InterLace's founding is narrated only through a seventh-grader's research paper, "four years prior" to May Y.P.W.), and the Master-vs-Read-Only question belongs to the samizdat thread.

Arc

The technology thread is the novel's history of two machines that eat their own waste, and both trace to the same childhood minute in a Sepulveda bedroom: a sheared doorknob rolling around its own bolt, "a cycloid on a sphere," the self-returning curve a bespectacled boy recognizes as the seed of "the possibilities of annulation" (1). Grown into the government's top applied-geometrical-optics man, that boy supplies the era's energy base its enabling discovery — the gamma-refractive lenses counted among "the big half-dozen discoveries that made possible cold annular fusion" — and then, retired on the patent fortune (rearview mirrors, holographic greeting cartridges, the videophonic Tableaux his own era's vanity will soon demand), becomes the filmmaker whose last work is the thread's endgame object (2). The spine holds him at optics altitude; his films belong to jim-art-ent. But the thread's shape is his: everything in it — reactor, market, medium — runs the cycloid's loop.

The media track runs start to finish inside one seventh-grader's research paper, which is itself the point: by YDAU this history is schoolwork (3, 9). Broadcast television, already bled by zappers and ad-editing VCRs, is attacked at its ideological root by the cable kabal's anti-passivity campaign (3) — and then killed by accident, when Viney & Veals's hideously effective Nunhagen, LipoVac, and NoCoat spots wake "literally millions of Network-devotees" to the agency of their own thumbs, and the Big Four fall off the shelf within days of losing the sports rights (4). Into the wreckage steps Noreen Lace-Forché, the "Killer-App Queen," with a front company incorporated the moment she foresaw the apocalypse: InterLace TelEntertainment turns the same anti-passivity rhetoric against cable itself, makes the viewer "her/his own programming director," and vertically integrates the vaults, the satellites, and a fiber grid bought for .17 on the dollar — killing advertising as a televisual form along the way, since no ad survives a cartridge's Review Function (5). The order it builds is the novel's weather: teleputers and pulse-matrices (8), 94% of paid entertainment absorbed at home in "an entertainment-market of sofas and eyes," and a compensatory street-level hunger to stand live witness to anything at all (10). Videophony is the track's parable-in-miniature: the one consumer advance the era rejected, collapsing through masks and Tableaux back to voice-only in a curve the text itself calls "classically annular" (6) — the knob rolling home to where it started (1).

The energy track is the same curve at continental scale. Annular fusion is a poison-eating triangle — Montpelier to Methuen to Loring and back — "a type of fusion that can produce waste that's fuel for a process whose waste is fuel for the fusion," derived not from physics but from annular medicine's cancer-given-cancer, observable at all only through the Founder's holographic conversions, his "optical glove-box" (7). Its greedy efficiency strips the land around it lifeless-then-lush and so requires the E.W.D. catapults that keep the Concavity fed (7) — the politics of which belong to the onan thread, but the machine is this one's. In medicine, in energy, in entertainment, the civilization's signature technology is the self-consuming loop.

The plot payoff is that both engines are exactly what the samizdat exploits, and the thread ends where the novel begins. Lace-Forché's purely commercial copy-proofing — Read-Only cartridges, Masters run at 585 r.p.m. on licensed hardware — is what makes the Entertainment's Master a single, physically recognizable, huntable object, the premise of the whole A.F.R. search (11; the adjudication of copies and burial sites stays with the samizdat thread, open). And the total pulse-grid has one seam the architecture never closes: the padded First-Class mailer with its "distinctive rectangular bulge," postmarked Phoenix — InterLace's own manufacturing hub — with a smiley where the registration-codes should be, arriving at 1927h on 1 April YDAU in the apartment of a man whose employer is in town "to cut another mammoth deal with InterLace" (12). The medium that promised total choice delivers, by ordinary mail, the one entertainment that ends choosing; the dissemination web the optics fortune helped build carries the optics man's last film. The knob rolls around its own bolt (1). The thread records the loop and, like both blind derivations before it, leaves the Master where the text leaves it: buried, undated, and running at the wrong speed for every machine the consumer world owns.

Key to the timeline

★ marks a pivotal event — one that carries this thread's arc. Unmarked events add texture around it.

Where an event says how it is known, that basis is one of: narrated (the narration states it), recalled (a character's own memory), reported (secondhand or testimony), claimed (asserted by someone with a stake), or disputed (conflicting versions). Conflicting details are quoted as the book has them rather than resolved.

Dating notes (apparatus)

Consolidated unresolved date/identity puzzles; as printed throughout. Union of both blind derivations plus this audit's catches; open cruxes stay open — adjudication belongs to the theory pages.

  • The InterLace rise has no absolute date (3-5) — open, as printed. Hal's account (scene 087) is a seventh-grade research paper written in May Y.P.W., treating the broadcast collapse "with a reverent tone" though it was "just four years prior, more or less overlapping with the waxing of the Gentle Era and Experialist Reconfiguration"; the crime/suicide spike is pegged only to "the penultimate year of the millennium," and "The rest, for Hal, is recent history." The whole media-history sequence is anchored only relatively (late B.S. sliding into early Subsidized Time), and n164 flags the account itself as "grossly simplified in Hal's ephebic account." No Subsidized-year stamp exists; the founding date is a standing open item — recorded as written, held for the theory pages. (Both blind derivations independently kept it open; B's "roughly B.S. 2001" arithmetic and its absolute-year glosses for the Subsidized year-names were not adopted — year-name-to-calendar mapping stays with the archive's dating rulings.)
  • Videophony's boom-and-bust window (6): given only as durations — "WITHIN LIKE 16 MONTHS OR 5 SALES QUARTERS" from craze to collapse, with fewer than 10% of calls using video "BY THE YEAR OF THE DEPEND ADULT UNDERGARMENT" (the scene's capitals). No absolute start year. The drafts' era brackets clashed (A "Subsidized era" / B "B.S."): scene 047 places the fad only in "the early days of InterLace's internetted teleputers," while scene 087 has Sprint going belly-up on a "primitively naked early mask- and Tableauxless form of videophony" before InterLace bought the fiber grid, and 047's aftermath language ("the Subsidized Era's tacky equivalents") reaches forward. Not harmonized — recorded as written, both anchors kept.
  • JOI's optics/annulation dating (1-2, 7): the physics career runs "during the Federal interval G. Ford–early G. Bush" (a B.S. marker), the annulation germ is stamped Winter B.S. 1963, and fusion is "made possible" by his AEC work without a completion date; the reactor is simply the operative energy base by the Subsidized present. Relative throughout.
  • Reflector variant (2, 7), as printed: scene 020 has JOI "designing neutron-scattering reflectors for thermo-strategic weapons systems"; scene 114 has him quitting "designing neutron-diffusion reflectors for Defense." Same career fact, two renderings — both raw-verified, recorded, not harmonized.
  • The Read-Only architecture (11) is undated, a standing engineering fact traced to Lace-Forché's M.B.A.-era design choice at the InterLace founding (5); the endnotes (n301, n303) report it without a stamp. The Master-vs-Read-Only question it creates (whether the found cartridge is duplicable, and where the true Master is buried) is the samizdat/A.F.R. open crux — held open on the theory pages (See the A.F.R. and Samizdat threads).
  • The two tech-snapshot rosters differ (8), as printed: both scenes carry "post-Primestar D.S.S. dissemination"; the variants are scene 017's "InterLace Telentertainment," "Internet Fax," "Dissemination-Grids," "Yushityu nanoprocessors," "laser chromotography" vs scene 121's "InterLace TelEntertainment," "InterNet Fax," "post-Web Dissemination-Grids," "Yushityu ceramic nanoprocessors," "laser chromatography." Same catalog, small variants — one media-tech state, recorded not reconciled.
  • The Yushityu sponsor-year's own name drifts (8), as printed: scene 043 renders it "...Easy-To-Install Upgrade For Infernatron/InterLace TP Systems For Home, Office Or Mobile"; scene 059's year-list has "...Easy-To-Install-Upgrade For Infernatron/InterLace TP Systems For Home, Office, Or Mobile (sic)." Recorded as written. (The primary draft's "Mimetic-Resolution-Cartridge-Replacement" rendering was a garble, corrected this audit.)
  • JOI's holographer, as printed inference (2, 5, 7): the "Mr. U. Ogilvie" who taught and graded Hal's InterLace-history paper (scene 087) and the Urquhart Ogilvie, Jr. whom n024 credits with JOI's "zone-plating laser holography" are plausibly the same E.T.A. optics-lab figure — an inference (first raised in Carlisle's guide), recorded in the archive's glossary (whose gloss, not the text's, is the "hologram work behind the Entertainment's technical theories" line), not asserted by the text; recorded open for the theory pages.
  • Scene 146 yields no tech beat. The roster-tagged 14-Nov-YDAU Joelle scene (teeth-worry and the Gately dental dream) carries only consumer-product texture (an over-the-counter enamel-revitalizing toothpaste "a whole level of power and expense above standard smoker's polish") and no media/energy-technology content, so the thread records no event for it.
  • Scene 045 sits off-thread. The Jarvik IX Exterior Artificial Heart purse-snatch is consumer-prosthetic texture narrated through Steeply's Moment article — a media artifact of the U.S. thread, not media/energy-technology history. Its one tech-thread fact — annular chemotherapy as fusion's conceptual model — is carried by event 7 from scene 114.
