JOI's optics: the patent fortune and the enabling of cold annular fusion

timeline_event

pivotal · B.S. era (Federal interval G. Ford–early G. Bush → early retirement)

  • When: B.S. era — JOI's public-sector optics career "during the Federal interval G. Ford–early G. Bush," then an early retirement into patents and film
  • What: James O. Incandenza, O.N.R.-financed doctor of optical physics, was "more or less the top applied-geometrical-optics man" in the O.N.R. and S.A.C., designing neutron-scattering reflectors for thermo-strategic weapons systems; at the Atomic Energy Commission his development of "gamma-refractive indices for lithium-anodized lenses and panels" is regarded as one of the handful of discoveries that made cold annular fusion possible (event 7). That acumen then translated, after early retirement, into a patented consumer-optics fortune — rearview mirrors, light-sensitive eyewear, holographic greeting cartridges, videophonic Tableaux (the very artifacts of event 6's mask economy), homolosine-cartography software, nonfluorescent public-lighting systems, film-equipment — the fortune that in turn funds E.T.A. and his film work. His applied contribution to fusion recurs in the E.T.A. curriculum as the special holographic conversions that let the annulation team study subatomics in poisonous environments (event 7). This is the thread's crucial hinge-figure: the same man's optics feed the era's fusion power AND its home-media hardware. See the Filmography & Entertainment thread / the JOI timeline for JOI-as-auteur; held here to the optics/energy-tech altitude.
