Arslanian blindfolded in the tunnel (pp. 572–573)
It’s also at just this point in the fusion-wastelessness problem where our own glorious optical Founder, Inc’s ex-Da, Mrs. Inc’s poor cuc— […] The man himself, at just this point, makes his final lasting contribution to state science after he quit designing neutron-diffusion reflectors for Defense. […] What the guy did was he helped design these special holographic conversions so the team that worked on annulation could study the behavior of subatomics in highly poisonous environments. Without getting poisoned themselves. […] Men’s Sanity in Corporate Sterno, Ars. Like an optical glove-box. The ultimate prophylactic.
Context
The other catalogued hit phrase, in full context (trims cross Arslanian's interjections). Pemulis's oral-history version of JOI's optics career: "our own glorious optical Founder" — the epithet the students actually use, optics first, everything else after — whose "final lasting contribution to state science" was optical too: holographic conversions that let the annulation team study poisons by looking at images of poisons instead. Pemulis's own gloss, "Like an optical glove-box. The ultimate prophylactic," is the theme in one figure: JOI's optics as apparatus for handling what would kill you if you touched it directly — which is exactly the inversion the Entertainment later performs (the image that does the poisoning). The coprolite plaque in Tavis's office ("You’ve seen the coprolite plaque in Tavis’s office," same passage) keeps the A.E.C. career physically present at E.T.A. Squares with 020's biography (weapons lenses → fusion → cinema) and n024's filmography-document.
