• What: The ceded northeast (Great Concavity to Americans, Great Convexity to Canadians) is a self-consuming waste ecology: the O.N.A.N.-Sunstrand annular-fusion facility at what used to be Montpelier, its cycle piped through the Methuen Fan-Complex and what used to be Loring A.F.B. (fusion fed on poisons — Pemulis's "moving right-triangular cycle of interdependence and waste-creation and -utilization"); giant ATHSCME "Air-Displacement Effectuators" (fans) atop the convex anodized-Lucite walls blowing the teratogenic cloud back north; Empire Waste Displacement (E.W.D.) catapults — "les trebuchets noirs" — flinging waste-vehicles into the subannular regions. The greedily efficient fusion strips all inhibitors, so the zone oscillates between barren waste and monstrous overgrowth, "As if time itself were vastly sped up" (114) — breeding the feral-hamster herds (descended, per the omniscient stamp, from two pets a Watertown NY boy freed at the migration's outset), insects of Volkswagen size, and the "massive, feral infants" that n304's scholar calls "passive icons of the Experialist gestalt"; whole stelliform Infant-cults venture north past Checkpoint Pongo after them every New Year and vanish (111).
