The O.N.A.N.T.A. urine-testing crisis: E.T.A.'s drug culture comes to a head

• What: The institutional collision between E.T.A.'s O.N.A.N.T.A.-accredited urine-testing regime and its underground drug culture. Beneath the academy runs a substance economy — Hal secretly smokes high-resin "Bob Hope" in the Pump Room off the maintenance tunnel; Michael Pemulis deals and has run a business "Sell[ing] Visine bottles of pre-adolescent urine during quarterly tests" (hence his recruiting clean urine from devout Muslim Idris Arslanian, event 16) — and it is Pemulis the administration is really after, because he "publicly dosed his opponent at Port Washington" (a Mormon kid). When the O.N.A.N.T.A. tester's lab van appears unannounced in the lot it "caused a tsunami of panic just before supper" (122); the showdown itself convenes in the Headmaster's office on 10 Nov, folded into the Eschaton disciplinary reckoning (event 15) — the summoned players find "the scrubbed young button-nosed" O.N.A.N.T.A. urologist hidden behind the door until Tavis asks "very quietly please to close both doors" (102) — and Tavis and the "urology guy" haul Hal, Axford, and Pemulis to the administrative loo for a supervised sample (Van Vleck reports seeing them leave "with the Association urine-guy holding them both by the ear," 154); Hal's and Axford's are only "to establish a context of objectivity for Pemulis's urine" — "It's Pemulis they want," and Hal reckons "they're going to give Pemulis the Shoe by the end of the term." Pemulis coolly negotiates a 30-day grace before a Show-grade full-spectrum scan (gas chromatography + electron-bombardment mass spectrometry), ostensibly for Pemulis but really to let Hal's fat-soluble THC clear before the WhataBurger — leveraging the bad timing of the Moment profiler's visit. The stakes are institutional: a dirty result would mean expulsion ("the Shoe"), forfeiture of Hal's 18's year, and public damage to E.T.A. and the Founder's memory; Hal's private response is abrupt chemical abstinence — in 29 days he means "to hand his own personal urine over to authority figures with a wide smile and exemplary posture" (122).
