Context
Orin's serial seduction is the cage of self worn as charm: the Subject exists only as a surface returning his own name, and for the act to work her entire interior — humor, griefs, career, the deaths of pets — has to be "vacuumed" away, leaving nothing but "O., O." It is anti-connection engineered to feel like intimacy, love refused on principle ("kills what needs it") in favor of a hope that requires the other person's disappearance. And the book locates the wound underneath: the one real connection, the "We" that dissolves the solipsist, is precisely the thing he had once and can never have again, which is why no single Subject can ever be enough.
