A joke scholarly reference sends the reader to a chapter in a fictional volume of reminiscences by pioneers of DT-cycle annular fusion. Its real payload is a medical aside: the annular "meta-disease" treatment works well on metastatic cancers but failed against the HIV-spectrum viruses, "since AIDS is itself a meta-disease." (p. 1044)
