Samizdat thread

The samizdat is the novel's terror-object: the lethal final film cartridge made by James O. Incandenza (JOI) — catalogued as Infinite Jest (V?) — so perfectly entertaining that anyone who watches it wants nothing else ever again and will die watching, "pithed" down to the mental energies of a moth. This page is the plot spine of the object, not of any one person who made or hunted it: JOI's optics and holography, the auto-wobble neonatal lens, the veiled performer (Madame Psychosis / Joelle van Dyne), the Master buried in the auteur's coffin, the chain of copies that leaks out through the mail and kills a Saudi medical attaché, and the twin hunts it sets off — the Wheelchair Assassins (A.F.R.) trying to seize a duplicable Master to disseminate as a weapon, the U.S. Office of Unspecified Services (U.S.O.U.S.) trying to find and contain it — hunts that cost both sides casualties merely for studying the thing. Where a beat lives on a character's own page (Joelle above all) or on the A.F.R. operational thread, it appears here only at the altitude of the object and cross-refers rather than re-deriving.

The thread's defining questions stay open here, as printed: what makes it lethal (the text floats holography-density, a p-terminal "reward" analogy, and pure myth, and settles none), the Master-vs-copies question (every anti-O.N.A.N. cell holds Read-Only copies that cannot be duplicated; the one duplicable Master is rumored buried with JOI, in ground now inside the Great Concavity), and whether a counter-film / antidote exists at all (rumored, never evidenced; Joelle says JOI only ever joked about it).

24 scenes. Begins at scene 7 → resolves at scene 178.

Arc

The samizdat's whole career is a joke about appetite, told twice — once by the man who made it and once by the nations that fight over it. James Incandenza comes to the final cartridge as an optics man "of the Hostile School" whose filmography had rehearsed visual lethality for years: holographic Medusas turning live audiences to stone, spectators swelling into "gigantic eyeballs in chairs" (1). What he actually shoots, per the one performer, is almost nothing — a glass revolving door, and a woman in white leaning over a wobbling neonatal lens apologizing for twenty minutes, the price of her unveiled face being that he put down the bottle (2). She never sees the result, doubts it was even coherent, and is left holding the question the whole thread then asks at scale: "a cage or really a door?" (3). Ninety days later he is dead without a note; his testament orders "the Masters of everything unreleased" into the brass casket with him (4); and the film's documentary existence shrinks to one filmography entry — "'Madame Psychosis'; no other definitive data," the Master "either destroyed or vaulted sui testator" (5). Everything that follows is two governments contending over an object whose very existence is an archival rumor.

Then the rumor starts killing people. A Canadian-born medical attaché opens a plain brown case with a smiling face embossed where the codes should be, rigs it into a recursive loop, and by mid-afternoon eight people stand watching in a room that "smelled very bad indeed" (6). The same anonymous mailer has already emptied a Berkeley household seventeen responders deep and two-thirds of a Tempe film festival; the warehoused survivors are "Docile and continent but blank [...] pithed"; Tine's staff give the thing its intelligence name, trace the mailings to routing hubs pointing north, and quietly log the first family clue — the victim's "prior possible involvement with the widow of the auteur" (7). What nobody can say is why it works: holography-density, the Brandon p-terminal "Rivers of Reward" precedent — analogies, not findings; the one hard datum is the victims' eyes, "Empty of intent," or in Steeply's grimmer revision "stuck" (8). Even studying it costs bodies on both sides — an idiot intern, then the twenty-year man who went in to pull him out (11) — and the only rumored mercy, a counter-film antidote, exists as "craziness of rumors" that the performer calls a dry joke of Jim's (9).

The geopolitics turn on a copyright engineer's spec sheet. Everyone has Read-Only copies; nobody has the Master; and only a Master can be duplicated (10, 14). Marathe states the A.F.R. thesis with terrible economy: the cartridge is "a U.S.A. production [...] Made by an American man in the U.S.A.," and the weapon is not the film but the choice — offer it to a nation that would be "fed this death of pleasure with spoons" and let the appetite do the rest (10). So the hunt runs down the object's physical trail: the copy Gately's botched Brookline burglary shook loose from DuPlessis (12), the pawned café-au-lait maker, the fatal interviews, the Antitois' shelf — where the real Entertainment finally surfaces, smile-embossed, at the cost of Desjardins and the diabetic Joubet, and proves Read-Only (14). The same search samples the wheelchaired-ecstatic street displays that had seeped into Boylston's scenery (13) and finds them blank — F.L.Q. terror-theater, "probably the hoax." And the cell converts its one working copy into an instrument, pricing re-viewings at a self-sawed digit apiece to prove the desire "incapable of satiation" (15): the ninth finger comes off as willingly as the second.

With the direct route dead, the two hunts become mirror images of each other. The A.F.R. pivots to persons (16): the radio engineer snatched and drained, the halfway houses of greater Boston canvassed for a veiled face, Luria P—— hung on the athlete son that U.S.O.U.S.'s own operative has been "clinging to [...] like a bad odor" — until, every canvass reported back negative (and Marathe privately knowing better), Fortier authorizes the most drastic step: acquire the auteur's immediate family, a mirror across I-91 at the former St. Johnsbury, "An old F.L.Q. trick," to swallow a busload of tennis children whole (17). The U.S. answer, that same snowed-in week, is a crossed-eyed prancing burro teaching four-to-twelve-year-olds to accept no smiling-faced cartridge and to fetch a policeman who can cut the power if the parents go glassy (18) — the superpower reduced to warning its children, in a cartoon, about its own national art form.

The endgame is the maker's last joke, delivered by the performer. Steeply finally reaches Joelle, who gives him the two scenes, the lens, and the punchline both hunts have been converging on: the Masters, if they exist, went into the coffin, and "Where he's buried is itself buried, now. It's in your annulation-zone. It's not even your territory." (19) — the grave lies in the widow's home province, annexed into the Great Concavity by the same Reconfiguration that created the A.F.R. Under a huge inverted tumbler an amplified voice is meanwhile demanding of Orin "Where Is The Master Buried" (19; the AFR thread (17)), and the spine stops there, mid-demand, exactly where the A.F.R. and E.T.A. timelines stop — no grave dug, no Master shown, no gala reached. Whether a finished Master exists, what makes the thing lethal, whether the antidote was ever more than a joke: all three stay open, as printed, while the object itself goes on smiling its crude ballpoint smile from inside ground that two nations buried and now cannot reach — a cage or really a door, still undecided (3).

Timeline (19 events)

Key to the timeline

★ marks a pivotal event — one that carries this thread's arc. Unmarked events add texture around it.

Where an event says how it is known, that basis is one of: narrated (the narration states it), recalled (a character's own memory), reported (secondhand or testimony), claimed (asserted by someone with a stake), or disputed (conflicting versions). Conflicting details are quoted as the book has them rather than resolved.

★ 1. The maker's optics — holography, annular capital, and the "Hostile School" substrate

UNDATED — JOI's twelve-year directorial career (the filmography is largely undated "B.S." before Subsidization); the holographic and "visually lethal" experiments precede the final cartridge

Scenes: Scene 098: master copies temptation · Scene n024: joi filmography

★ 2. JOI films the final cartridge — the auto-wobble neonatal lens; the two scenes; the sobriety price

filming "here at the start of Y.T.S.D.B." (2004), inside the Xmas-YTMP-to-1-Apr-YTSDB sobriety window; JOI killed himself "less than ninety days later"

Scenes: Scene 062: notkin party joelle overdose · Endnote 80 — Why Avril thought Joelle and Jim were lovers · Scene 178: joelle q interview master

3. "A cage or really a door" — the object's meaning left open; the "too perfect" joke

the making = YTSDB (2004); the reflection = 7 Nov YDAU (Notkin's party) and ?/20 Nov YDAU (the Steeply interview)

Scenes: Scene 062: notkin party joelle overdose · Scene 178: joelle q interview master

5. *Infinite Jest (V?)* — the archival ghost; Master "destroyed or vaulted sui testator"

YTSDB (2004); some archivists file it under YTMP as completion of IJ(IV) — as printed

Scenes: Scene 178: joelle q interview master · Scene n024: joi filmography

★ 6. The medical attaché razzle — the object mailed, the recursive loop, the ward of the "pithed"

the cartridge inserted at 1927h on 1 April YDAU; the attaché still viewing across 2010h, then 0015-0145h on 2 April; the household and bystanders found by mid-afternoon 2 April

Scenes: Scene 007: attache receives cartridge · Scene 011: attache still watching · Scene 014: attache wets recliner · Scene 025: attache wife watches · Scene 028: attache room fills

★ 7. The samizdat surfaces across the U.S. and is named; the U.S.O.U.S. counter-hunt begins

the cartridge began "popping haphazardly up" ~two summers before early Nov YDAU (2009); Tine's Boston coordination is Early November YDAU; the razzle "late last spring"

Scenes: Scene 029: marathe steeply entertainment · Scene 107: tine samizdat dossier

9. The anti-Entertainment / antidote crux — does a counter-film exist?

the crux surfaces on the 30 April YDAU mountainside and recurs into the ?/20 Nov YDAU Joelle interview

Scenes: Scene 038: marathe steeply disguises · Scene 178: joelle q interview master

11. The cost of studying it — U.S.O.U.S.'s testing losses: the intern and Hank Hoyne

the losses occur during U.S.O.U.S. controlled testing before the 30 Apr – 1 May YDAU colloquy, where Steeply reports them

Scenes: Scene 101: entertainment casualties · Scene 123: steeply father mash

★ 12. The DuPlessis copy — the trailhead the A.F.R. follows

the copy is taken in the Brookline burglary (Autumn YDPAH, 2008, per scene 016); traced by the A.F.R. through YDAU (the Antitoi raid ~9-14 Nov YDAU)

Scenes: Scene 016: gately duplessis burglary · Endnote 18 — The burglary's high-end haul · Scene 098: master copies temptation · Scene 145: afr antitoi search · Endnote 300 — how the A.F.R. tracked DuPlessis

★ 16. The indirect route — hunting the performer and the auteur's circle

the two-route doctrine standing from the Antitoi occupation (?/9 Nov); the indirect phase opens in earnest with the Read-Only verdict (~14 Nov) and runs to the 19-Nov escalation

Scenes: Scene 143: afr two ways · Scene 145: afr antitoi search · Scene 147: afr finds entertainment · Scene 163: afr mirror ambush plan

★ 19. The buried-Master endgame — "Where he's buried is itself buried"

?/20 Nov YDAU (Steeply's interview of Joelle); the A.F.R.'s parallel interrogation of Orin ~20 Nov YDAU

Scenes: Scene 178: joelle q interview master · Scene 184: orin tumbler roaches

Dating notes (apparatus)

Consolidated unresolved date/identity puzzles; as printed throughout. Union of both blind derivations' candidates plus this audit's finds.

  • Year mapping: per the archive's canonical dating rulings, YW = 2002, YTMP = 2003, YTSDB (Year of the Trial-Size Dove Bar) = 2004, YDPAH = 2008, YDAU (Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment) = 2009. Applied here without re-derivation.
  • What makes it lethal (open crux, not a dating error): the text floats holography-density (scene 098), a p-terminal "reward" analogy (scene 096), and pure myth (the Odalisque de Sainte Thérèse / hair-covered figure, scene 103), and settles none; P.E.T.s show "not near enough alpha" for hypnosis or dopamine-surge (scene 107). Recorded open per the fate/identity rule; any adjudication belongs to the theory pages.
  • Master-vs-copies (open crux): every anti-O.N.A.N. cell holds Read-Only copies that cannot be duplicated (scenes 098, 147, n301, n303); a single duplicable Master is rumored buried with JOI (scenes 178, n080). Whether a finished Master exists at all is left open — Joelle doubts it (scene 178); n024's archival apparatus leaves it "destroyed or vaulted sui testator." Kept as printed.
  • The antidote / anti-Entertainment (open crux): a counter-film is rumored (scene 038) but evidenced nowhere; Joelle says JOI only ever joked about "too perfect" and "never talked about an anti-version or antidote" (scene 178). Recorded open.
  • IJ(V?) completion year (archival, as printed): filed under YTSDB by most, under YTMP by archivists who read it as completion of IJ(IV) (n024); JOI also used "Madame Psychosis" for IJ(IV). Unresolved.
  • Final-cartridge content (disputed, as printed): Joelle's firsthand two-scene account (scene 178) vs. Notkin's secondhand "maternal Death cosmology" account (scene 159, on Joelle's timeline (event 28)). The two disagree on nearly everything except the lens. Not reconciled here; full detail on the Joelle timeline.
  • Razzle death toll (as printed): the attaché-massacre count is "Upwards of twenty" (Steeply) vs. "twenty-three human beings lost for all time" (Marathe), both within scene 029. Unreconciled. (Carried from the AFR thread.)
  • Razzle season drift (as printed): scenes 007-028 stamp the Boston razzle 1-2 April YDAU; Tine's early-November survey places it "late last spring" (107). Recorded, not reconciled.
  • Confiscated-copies inventory (as printed): Marathe has U.S.O.U.S. holding copies "Confiscated from razzles of Berkeley, Boston" (098), but scene 107 records the Berkeley cartridge as vanished from an S.F.P.D. Evidence Room (electron-microscopy: flannel fibers), with the Tempe and New Iberia cartridges "in custody, vaulted." Unreconciled.
  • The attaché's origin (as printed): "born in the hated-by-you Ottawa" (029) vs. "by birth and residence a native of Québec" (7). One person; recorded, not fixed.
  • DuPlessis-burglary dating (carried from the AFR thread (5)): scene 016 stamps the fatal burglary "AUTUMN—YEAR OF DAIRY PRODUCTS FROM THE AMERICAN HEARTLAND" (YDPAH), yet the 30 April YDAU dialogue treats DuPlessis's death as recent. Flagged on the AFR thread; carried here on event 12, not resolved.
  • Grave location: Joelle tells Steeply only that the grave is in "your annulation-zone," ground that "is not even your territory" (scene 178); the funeral's placement "in the L'Islet Province of Nouveau Québec, the birth-province of the Auteur's widow," is Notkin's secondhand account (scene 159; Joelle's timeline (event 35)). The site's post-Reconfiguration status (inside the Concavity/Convexity) is the endgame obstacle, as printed.
