• What: The A.F.R. works Orin Incandenza as the likeliest route to the Master, because DuPlessis is thought to have gotten his copies "from this relative, an athlete" (145) — and because Orin is the one Incandenza who (the text hints, as printed; the "mailer" question is left open on the theory pages) mailed the fatal cartridge to the attaché. Legless "pathologically shy punting-groupies" tail Orin, vanishing whenever U.S.O.U.S.'s "Helen Steeply" is in Phoenix and reappearing hours after she leaves; a "putatively Swiss" hand-model is planted as a Subject (calm under the covers with a portable O2 mask and a Schmeisser miniature machine pistol in her purse) while a legless, string-tied "surveyor" with the same Swiss accent works Orin at the door under cycling cover stories, notating his nostalgia-aria for what he "misses" (the scene text leaves the surveyor unnamed; the scene record identifies him as Fortier). The operation is run by "the redoubtable Mlle. Luria P——," the A.F.R. honeytrap operative (once DuPlessis's and Tine's stenographer, event 7), "winning necessary confidences with her usual alacrity."
