The recovery thread is built like an argument: first the disease, at every altitude the novel can reach, and only then the strange apparatus that answers it. The disease is hereditary before it is anything else — a hip-flask pressed on a ten-year-old in a Tucson garage, a father "brought home... under what's called the Influence," a grandfather waved at one generation further back, and, decades downstream, a mother terrified for her son "because of the way his father had drunk, when alive, and reportedly his father's own father before him" (2). It is a cage for the still-functional — Erdedy splayed by the phone, planning to "cure himself by excess," seventy or eighty quits deep (3); it is an anesthetic against a prior pain — Kate Gompert, who wants not to hurt, and whose horror creeps back not with the Bob Hope but with the "Stopping" (4); and at the floor it is a "never ending strugle" that ends on a Copley Square blowergrate with a laced bundle (5), or in the men's room of the Armenian Foundation Library, Withdrawing into "The Old Cold Bird" until time itself becomes the shit (6). Against all this the founding gesture of the recovery world is almost comically blunt: a nameless Boston-AA ex-con furnishes a halfway house by burglary and makes incoming drunks try to eat rocks, because the whole price of "the gift of sobriety" is the willingness to go to any lengths — "utterly total surrender" (1).

What surrender means is the thread's real subject, and the 8-November White Flag meeting is its Sinai. Boston AA runs on a gift economy — Groups trading Commitments, sobriety kept only by giving it away — and on a single epistemic discipline: sit up front, "Identify instead of Compare," because "Empathy, in Boston AA, is called Identification" (9). The universal drugalogue ends at the Bottom, the cage with bars in every direction, where the options are eliminating your own map or a blubbering 0200h. phone call; and the thing that must then be given up is the will itself — "the web your Disease sits and spins in": "You have to Starve The Spider" (10). The culture defends this mechanism with rules that look anti-intellectual and are really prophylactic: no irony ("An ironist in a Boston AA meeting is a witch in church"), no aetiology, no Why — because the Why is a labyrinth of Self-Pity and Denial with the Disease waiting at its center (11). Even the clichés are load-bearing: "the vapider the AA cliché, the sharper the canines of the real truth it covers" (14). The doctrine's engine is desperation itself — the not-yet-broken diagnose the Program as an "Attitude of Platitude," one slavish dependence swapped for another, and leave; the Substance then beats them "into such a double-bound desperation" that they crawl back begging for the platitudes they mocked (16), which is why the rooms belong to "the ones with the gun to their head, the ones who stick and Hang" (19).

The YDAU plot runs the doctrine through three test cases. Joelle van Dyne comes in through the textbook door — the walk to Notkin's party having already "admitted powerlessness over this cage, this unfree show," the freebase binge meant as suicide (12) — and supplies the newcomer's intellect at its most resistant: "But For the Grace of God" is "a subjunctive, a counterfactual," language she must have Blind Faith in that makes her want to put her head in a Radarange (12). Yet it is Joelle who later models the whole grammar of fellowship through U.H.I.D. — First Step, chips, a group that will "love you till you can like love yourself" (15) — and Joelle who, in Denial Aisle at a Cocaine Anonymous meeting, feels a Shattuck-Shelter drugalogue land across every line of race and Substance: "She can Identify" (19). Randy Lenz is the counter-case, the addict who takes recovery's entire vocabulary and hollows it out: secret cocaine "in the very interests of sobriety," monthly chips accepted "with a clear conscience," spot-urines beaten with a Texas catheter, Rage and Powerlessness metabolized nightly on the neighborhood's animals (17). The culture's stock self-accusation — that AA is a cult that brainwashes — gets its stock answer here (a brain that "needed a good brisk washing"), and Lenz's refusal of the one non-negotiable, surrender, carries him out of the House ("invited to ingest Substances and abuse animals elsewhere") and down the whole gradient: relapse, Little Lisbon, and a white wig in the A.F.R.'s viewer-willingness pen, seated beside the post-seizure Poor Tony as a test subject for the fatal Entertainment (23, 6). The thread never says the stakes plainer than that.

And Don Gately is the proof case, precisely because the doctrine never quite closes for him. At ten months clean he stands at a Braintree podium and admits the Program's central term is a blank — no God as he understands Him, just knees on the floor morning and night and "an edgeless blankness that somehow feels worse" than the atheism he came in with — and Boston AA applauds the honesty and tells him to Keep Coming (14). What he has instead of theology is practice: pain as the way it gets better, buried memories surfacing in sobriety, the daily maintenance the round-robin sharers call cleaning your side of the street (14, 24). Shot defending the House's residents, he becomes the thread's climax: the disease is "a thing that basically hides," blotting out every problem with the Substance (21) — and Gately, in terrific infected pain on a Trauma Wing with Demerol on offer around the clock, refuses to hide, refuses to blot, holds sobriety above relief one inter-heartbeat Now at a time. Abiding is the Gift of the Present militarized: Joelle's Evel-Knievel breakthrough — stop lining the clean days up end to end; there is only this day (20) — becomes his wall around each second, and at the fever's crisis his "only conscious concern was Asking For Help to refuse Demerol," the surrender he could never understand, lived out with the last word he can force out: "addict" (22). The thread's final beat extends the machinery past addiction altogether: the remorseless A.D.A. who has hunted Gately for years arrives at Pat Montesian's office working his own Ninth Step, resentment named as spiritual poison, the case dropped to clean his own side of the street — willingness still pending ("Haven't yet been willing. Yet.") (25). The spine ends where the novel does, everything open that the text leaves open — DIS-EASE or disease (8), the God angle (12, 14), whether Gately lives — with the recovery world's wager intact: that a surrendered will, a room of the equally afflicted, and one guarded day are enough, and that everything else is the head hopping the wall.
