• What: Executing the cell's sweep for the veiled performer — Fortier, Marathe, young Balbalis and R. Ossowiecke, "all those with the better English," working every hospital, psychiatric institution, and Substance-recovery demi-maison "within a 25-km. radius," expansion procedures pre-formulated (147) — Marathe poses as "Henri," a deformed Swiss resident-alien addict (DuPlessis-arranged O.I.N.S. papers; machine pistol holstered to his stump), veiled and blanket-lapped like a U.H.I.D. member, reciting rehearsed intake lines. Interviewed by the House's authority (Pat Montesian), he learns a female U.H.I.D. member is in early residency — Joelle van Dyne, the performer both his masters want — and spots, among the donated cartridges in Pat's cabinet, two plain brown cases blank "except maybe for tiny round faces of embossed smiles": possible copies of the Entertainment sitting in a halfway-house office. He casts his intake to keep both options live — report the cartridges to Fortier, the girl to Steeply, "or oppositely" — memorizing every alarm, exit, and lock while judging Pat's neck-snapping "inutile at this time." The A.F.R. has now found the performer without seeing her, and a possible cartridge cache, in one canvass stop up the hill from E.T.A. That same night, at Ryle's jazz club, Marathe enacts the betrayal — using the bar phone to telephone his tip (the performer's Ennet House location) that turns the cell's own field-intelligence chief against it; he tells a drunk stranger, "I am spending a day to find someone I think my friends will kill [...] and I come here and telephone to betray them."
