• What: Among Hal's few concrete images of the father-son bond: JOI "behind Orin in the upstairs bathroom, towering over and down, teaching Orin to shave against the grain, upward" — a rare instance of instruction actually passing between them (cf. Bain's lament, n269, that JOI's engrossment usually left sons un-taught). Orin later shaves this same way (scene 012, "shaving upward, with south-to-north strokes, as he was taught").
