• What: Much of what the family "knows" about its own murk comes solely through Orin, "whose forte" was never "pinpoint accuracy": the account of C.T.'s dwarf mother, the darts-accident, and the Tavis–Mondragon (non-)blood relation all "come from Orin," decocted from a distraught C.T. in the OB/GYN waiting room when Orin was seven. And Orin is the source for the sign of Avril's later affair with John Wayne: "Orin alleged in Y.T.M.P. that when he took the Moms's car in the morning he sometimes observed the smeared prints of nude human feet on the inside of the windshield." Orin also insists (per Hal, scene 179) that JOI "was faithful to the Moms right up to the end, that his attachment to Orin's fiancée was not sexual" — a key mailer-question datum, sourced to the family's least reliable narrator; n080 carries the same claim at Joelle's remove ("Orin Incandenza knew that Joelle van Dyne and Dr. James O. Incandenza weren't lovers; Mrs. Avril Incandenza did not know that they weren't lovers").
