Summary

A single paragraph: Pemulis, twitchy-eyed and checking behind him both ways, comes around the Subdorm B curve with his stick and frustum-shaped stool to visit his ceiling entrepôt — and finds at least eight drop-ceiling panels somehow fallen out of their struts and on the floor, some broken, including the relevant panel. No old sneaker is in evidence as he clears the wreckage, plants the stool, and peers up into the dark lattice with his Bentley-Phelps penlight in his teeth. The stash — including, by strong implication, the DMZ — is gone.

What to notice

Two sentences, and the first withholds the name: a whole clause of furtive choreography — the twitchy eye, the stick, the "frustum-shaped stool" — before "Michael Pemulis" arrives, so the ritual is identified before the man, a stash-run so rehearsed it has dedicated equipment. The only account of what happened is the word "somehow" — panels that "have somehow fallen out" — an agentless passive that is all the explanation the novel will ever give; no raid is shown, no culprit named, and the archive's reading keeps the question open. And notice where it cuts: not on discovery or reaction but mid-gaze, penlight in teeth, "looking up into the darkness of the struts' lattice" — the scene ends inside the empty hiding place, and Pemulis's face is never shown again on this question.

Beats — page-by-page

  • p. 916: "Entrepôt-bound, twitchy-eyed and checking both sides behind him"; the stick, the stool, the penlight in the teeth; eight-plus panels down, some broken "in that incomplete, hingey way stuff with fabric-content gets broken"; "No old sneaker is in evidence"; looking up into the darkness of the struts' lattice.

Themes in this scene

  • Addiction and Recovery: micro-scene, one honest tag — the addict's stash-check ritual (the rehearsed furtiveness, the dedicated tools) arriving at the addict's nightmare: the Substance vanished, agency unknown.

Connections — backward & forward

Backward

  • The entrepôt and its old-sneaker cache were established at scene 057, p. 216 ("an old sneaker that sits atop the aluminum strut between two panels in subdorm B's drop ceiling, Pemulis's time-tested entrepôt"; cf. n.324); the DMZ bought from Antitoi Entertainment (scene 050, pp. 169-171; the transaction narrated at p. 215) lived here.
  • Follows directly from Pemulis's failed "really important interfacing" with Hal (p. 907; scene 172, pp. 906-909) — this discovery is plausibly part of what he needed to discuss, or its confirmation; his twitchy eye runs through both scenes.
  • The administration's urinalysis case against Pemulis (n.324, n.332) makes a confiscation raid the natural reading — see scene n332 — but the text never says who took it; the missing DMZ is a live wire under the Hal-endgame question (was Hal dosed? by whom?) that scene 001 and n.321's dream keep open. See scene n321.
  • The fallen-panels image rhymes with E.T.A.'s general November disintegration (the mess of the map, scene 172 p. 908) and with the tunnel/ceiling spaces motif (Eschaton bunkers, the tunnel club, Ortho's bed).

Notable passages (1)

  • p. 916: "No old sneaker is in evidence on the floor as he clears the panels… looking up into the darkness of the struts' lattice." — the whole scene; the unanswered question of who emptied the entrepôt is one of the book's deliberate open circuits.
