Summary

A day in the "never ending strugle" of three street addicts — yrstruly, C, and Poor Tony Krause — told in a phonetic, idiosyncratically apostrophized first-person vernacular whose tics ("and everything like that," "elemonade his map," "eat cheese," "depart for green pastures") form a complete euphemistic system for violence and betrayal; the register is rendered here descriptively, not imitated. On Christmas Eve YDPAH the crew robs and maims two victims, cops from Roy Tony in the Brighton Projects, and — over Poor Tony's white-faced objections — takes its $400 to Dr. Wo in Chinatown, whom Poor Tony (it emerges) helped burn for a fronted bundle in the fall. Wo, smiling, sells them three bundles of "Hotshots": Drano-laced bags. At their Copley blower-grate, Poor Tony conspicuously fails to whine about shooting last; yrstruly, catching the superstition-cold tell, slow-cooks his own shot; C boots first and dies horrifically, eye popping from his face, biting through Poor Tony's feather boa. They dumpster C's body, Poor Tony flees ("departed for green pastures and ate cheese"), and yrstruly spends two days kicking outside his Mumster's locked door before a detox bed and methadone let him stand upright and "thearize on what to try and do."

What to notice

The register is the scene: a written testimony in phonetic street vernacular whose euphemism system — maps get elemonaded, betrayers eat cheese, the fled have departed for green pastures — holds every horror at exactly one remove, so that the reader performs the decoding the narrator can't afford to do. Notice that the scene's loudest utterance is a silence: Poor Tony conspicuously failing to whine about shooting order at the blower-grate, and yrstruly answering that silence wordlessly, by cooking his own shot slow — a murder-by-etiquette conducted entirely in what is not said. Dread arrives the same way, through protocol: "and Wo never sits down at the booth with the skeet it isnt' done in his comerce" — execution announced as a breach of table manners. The idiom has a comic ceiling and one moral absolute ("theres' nothing wurse than a Pimp", delivered mid-atrocity), and its economics get a thesis line: "its' a full time job to stay straight and there is no vacation for XMas". And watch the bystanders when a man goes down by the swing set and nobody moves: spectation-instead-of-intervention, the book's great media nightmare already operating at street level, no cartridge required.

Beats — page-by-page

  • p. 128: Wake-ups boosted at a Harvard Square sidewalk sale; Poor Tony's On-The-House ruse lures the "Patty citizen" into the victim's own ride; the crew rolls him.
  • p. 129: the crew breaks the victim's jaw "for insentive not to eat no cheese"; C, "not 2Bdenied," takes off an ear; yrstruly's flat "so what was the exact pernt to that like"; copping half a bundle from Roy Tony in the Projects playground; the Copley library mensroom shooting gallery; the all-day economics — "its' a full time job to stay straight and there is no vacation for XMas at anytime."
  • p. 129: NyQuil boosted at the Central Square CVS via mop-handle mirror-tilt; a foreign student's bookbag scores only "books and disks"; Kely Vinoy dopesick on her corner; the Word out on Stokely Darkstar — HIV-confirmed and professing not to give a shit about "trancemission" — the street's Word is a warning off his works.
  • p. 130: Pimp economics (works held hostage, Kely kept "just this side of dopesick 24-7"); yrstruly's NYC past hustling in Columbus Square; the second roll — an older drunk, "legless on shots," lured from the Bow&Arrow by Poor Tony, beaten into a snowdrift; $400, a fur-collared coat, a watch.
  • p. 131: Post-2200 Projects too dangerous to cop in; a large man has a "hart incident" by the swing set and nobody moves; the debate — Delphina's bunk p-dope vs. Dr. Wo's "well known exellent skeet"; Poor Tony turns "white as a shit" at the word Chinatown and argues for laying up through Christmas.
  • p. 132: C is not 2Bdenied; the Orange Line south, the near-rape of a nurse mentioned in one flat subordinate clause; Poor Tony "white and detracted," recalling "some type deal where Dr. Wo might of got slightly got over on"; the fat-cab fare-jump; Poor Tony stationed outside, low-profile in heels and feather boa in sub-zero snow.
  • p. 132-133: Inside Hung Toys: Wo's banker look, the red curtain with winged-snake clouds, C's expansive lies about laying up; Wo goes behind the curtain a longer-than-average time while C and yrstruly jones and theorize about getting ratted.
  • p. 133: Wo returns, sits down with the bundles — "and Wo never sits down at the booth with the skeet it isnt' done in his comerce" — and asks, smiling, after "goodold Poor Tony," sending him "his quite best regards… and a thousand blisses"; C denies crewing with fags "since aprox the autum period."
  • p. 134: At the blower-grate: Poor Tony doesn't whine about waiting his turn — the tell; yrstruly's "wicked cold inside feeling" of superstition; he purposely cooks slow and lets C tie off first; C boots and the Drano hits — screaming, flopping on the grate, the feather boa stuffed in his mouth, blood and "materil," the eye popping out on its blue string "looking at the fag Poor Tony."
  • p. 134: The buried confession, mid-catastrophe: "Later with Cs' map elemonaded Poor Tony later conceited admitting Susan T. Cheese helped a Worcester fag get over on Wo for a fronted bundle in autum is why."
  • p. 135: C dies "for keeps"; the body into an empty library dumpster (the head's "fucked up sound" on the bottom); Poor Tony's sobbing vows to get clean and dance in a Fenway club; yrstruly's options weighed (eliminate Poor Tony? rat out the warehouse to Wo?); Wo absent on Christmas morning; Poor Tony flees and informs; two days kicking in the Mumster's hallway, then detox, methadone, three squares, and theorizing.

Themes in this scene

  • Addiction and Recovery: the novel's ground-floor view of the disease — addiction as a full-time logistics job with no Christmas, where loyalty, sex, ears, and bodies are all denominated in bags; the cage at its barest, decades below Ennet House's threshold.
  • Communication and Solipsism: the narration's euphemism-armor ("elemonade," "and everything like that") holds every horror at one remove; betrayals run on what's conspicuously not said (Poor Tony's silence about shooting order is the scene's loudest utterance, and yrstruly answers it wordlessly by cooking slow).
  • Memory and Forgetting: memory as document — the piece is written testimony reconstructing the catastrophe after the fact, retrospect ending with yrstruly finally upright enough to "thearize" on the past and what to do next (p. 135); remembering conducted in a euphemism system that pre-processes the worst for the record.

Connections — backward & forward

Backward

  • Chronology concord: Carlisle places the DuPlessis burglary (scene 016) months before this Christmas Eve — matching the catalog's own Autumn-YDPAH dating for 016; the two layers agree.

Forward

  • Roy Tony here (Projects bench dealer) is the Wardine/Clenette thread's predator (scene 008) — and explicitly NOT Poor Tony Krause (adopted ruling); he resurfaces transformed at the NA hug-protocol meeting Erdedy attends (pp. 503-507).
  • Poor Tony's flight begins his terminal arc: the Antitoi shop, the Jarvik IX purse-snatch (scene 045, Aug YDAU — boa, wig, heels all match), the Watertown-library-men's-room withdrawal and the seizure on the Gray Line (scene 069, pp. 299-307), and his last prowl via Ruth van Cleve (pp. 714-721). The Antitoi-shop shelter also wires him into the A.F.R.'s Antitoi raid (scene 097, pp. 475-489) and its aftermath (scenes 143/145).
  • The "older type individual" — "legless on shots," still walking — rolled into the snowdrift (p. 130) is, per Carlisle's identification, Burt F. Smith — the Ennet House resident who "got mugged and beaten half to death in Cambridge on Xmas Eve of last year, and left there to like freeze there" and "ended up losing his hands and feet" (p. 275, scene 066): a 150-page loop-closure in which the crew's victim and its narrator both wash up at Ennet House.
  • "Eat cheese" / "elemonade his map" and the rest of the euphemism system recur as Ennet House street-idiom (p. 202, scene 056 — Carlisle's gloss-cite); Eckwus and Stokely Darkstar, whom the crew brushes past here, fit Poor Tony's "red leather fags" set and resurface in his p. 690 prowl orbit (scene 133).
  • C crewed for Whitey Sorkin on the North Shore (p. 132, spelled "Whity") — Sorkin is Gately and Fackelmann's bookmaker-boss; the Drano-hotshot execution here is the same underworld physics as the Fackelmann ending (scenes 173/185, pp. 912-915 and 973-981): debts repaid through the spike.
  • "Delphina down by the Empire hangers" (p. 131) is plausibly the catalogued Lady Delphina, Joelle's Upper Brighton cocaine dealer — same name, same Enfield-Brighton turf; an inference, never stated.
  • If the catalog's Emil Minty identification of the yrstruly narrator holds (an open crux — this scene never names him, though scene 069, p. 300, has "Emil" marking Poor Tony "for de-mapping as a consequence of that horrid thing with Wo and Bobby C last winter"), Minty later appears at Ennet House as a resident (first roster appearances, pp. 176+); the written-testimony feel of this piece reads plausibly as a House assignment, which would date its composition to YDAU (doubly speculative — the identification is unadjudicated and the register evidence is circumstantial).
  • Stokely Darkstar's weaponized Virus and the works-sharing taboo prefigure the AIDS/needle material in Boston AA-NA lore (the Gately sections) and the general motif of pleasure delivery systems as vectors of death (the Entertainment itself).
  • The Copley library blower-grate site recurs: Steeply's Moment article has the artificial heart's remains "found some hours later behind the historic Boston Public Library in fashionable Copley Square" (scene 045 raw, p. 144) — he returns to this exact home turf.

Notable passages (9)

  • p. 129: "its' a never ending strugle its' a full time job to stay straight and there is no vacation for XMas at anytime." — thesis of the street-addict economy.
  • p. 130: "theres' nothing wurse than a Pimp" — the narrator's one moral absolute, mid-atrocity.
  • p. 133: "and Wo never sits down at the booth with the skeet it isnt' done in his comerce" — the protocol breach that announces the execution; dread via etiquette.
  • p. 134: "I yrstruly get a cold feeling of super station once more" — superstition as the only sense organ left; the slow-cook decision that follows is the scene's moral crux (he knowingly lets C die first).
  • p. 131: "one large Niger in a Patriots hat has a hart incident and downhegoes on the black top by the swing set right in front of us and none of his brothers unquot gosofar to do any thing he lays there" — spectation-instead-of-intervention at street level; pairs with the Entertainment's watchers.
  • p. 132: "he might be a dicksucking fag but hes' not a starry eyed' moroon" — Poor Tony's self-knowledge in the idiom's own key; the register's comic-pathetic ceiling.
  • p. 134-135: "one eye it like allofa sudden pops outof his map, like with a Pop you make with fingers in your mouth… and hangs there looking at the fag Poor Tony" — the execution's unbearable image; the dead eye assigning blame.
  • p. 135: "and then Poor Tony departed for green pastures and ate cheese" — the euphemism system compressing flight and betrayal into pastoral idiom.
  • p. 135: "it took yrstruly two days of Kicking The Bird in the hall out side my Mumsters' apartment that for payback she locked the door" — the testimony's last domestic detail; mother-as-locked-door, withdrawal as inheritance.
