It is named as the Program's central gift, in the words of Ferocious Francis's own sponsor Sarge: "It's a gift, the Now: it's AA's real gift: it's no accident they call it The Present." The newcomer's counter-error is dramatized in Joelle's breakthrough, told at the bedside "trying to give him a little bit of a meeting": she had always relapsed because she was "adding the clean days up" — "I counted them. I'd add them up. Line them up end to end" — until each day became a car Evel Knievel had to clear and the year ahead an impossible jump; keeping it in the single day is what the cliché was armoring all along (the raw's own caution noted: "newly sober people are awfully vulnerable to the delusion that people with more sober time than them are romantic and heroic"). The scene also fixes Boston AA's protective sexual ethic: the newcomer comes in with "their nervous systems still on the outside of their bodies," the one-year no-romance suggestion holds (n.292: the removed Substance leaves a hole that romance offers only a "delusive analgesic" for; "An Alcoholic Is a Relief-Seeking Missile"), and seducing a newcomer — "13th-Stepping" — is "the province of true bottom-feeders," "almost tantamount to rape": "It's predation." Gately's own shamed self-audit closes the loop — his sharpest Joelle-fantasies coincide with fantasies of her running his legal mess, "wanting somebody else to take care of his mess, somebody else to keep him out of his various cages" — the addictive delusion itself, recognized.
