Summary
Aftermath of a purse-snatching, from inside the victim's bruised head: Poor Tony Krause (perceived only as a hideous red-coated "apparition" of a woman) has just torn Ruth van Cleve's purse free and, when Kate Gompert's quality macramé strap held, swung Kate in a wide Crack-the-Whip arc into a lightpost. Kate, half-blind, everything tinged violet, clings to the very pole that hit her, fighting nausea and trying not to think about her bruised brain, while Ruth chases the thief up Prospect St. screaming street obscenities. A spittle-bearded bum detaches from a storefront, shouts "Seen it! I'm a witness!" at no one in particular, and holds a decayed palm under her face — wanting change, she slowly reasons, from the person he's just watched get robbed. The scene closes by replaying the snatch itself: the strap, the spin, the bonk-clang, the sky and sidewalk switching places, and Kate "alone and purseless," watching robber and pursuer recede, "both seeming to be shrieking for help."
What to notice
The scene runs concussed: aftermath first, the snatch itself only assembling at the end as replay — narrative order mimicking a bruised brain that can't file the event until after the blow. Everything is color-graded to a single wavelength — the street "tinged in violet", the beggar's palm violet, "a violet sun exploded" — injury rendered as a filter over the lens rather than a fact reported. And Poor Tony, whom the reader knows at a glance, never gets a name or even a stable pronoun here: "the apparition", "her/his/its red leather coat" — his dissolution measured out grammatically, by what Kate's sentences can no longer parse.
Beats
- p. 714: the apparition's red coat shrinks up Prospect St., Ruth van Cleve on its "lurid tail"; pedestrians leap into the street to dodge the swinging purses; everything "tinged in violet"; a voice nearby: "Seen it!"
- pp. 714-715: the witness-gargoyle moves in, "jerky, as in a film missing frames" — bearded, double army coats, exploded arteries in one eye, shaking "like an old machine," "a smell involved."
- p. 715: pedestrians do the "studious, urban kind of no-attention"; Kate's clinical self-torture — "Concussion is really another word for a bruised brain"; the deadpan reveal: "The lightpost she held herself up with was what had hit her."
- p. 715: the bum's trembling palm with fungal splotches and dark branching palm-lines; the weather-bleached GIGABUCKS ticket on the pavement (n.299); she can't summon the juice for the local "Go Screw"; she reasons: if he witnessed the whole thing, how can he think she has change?
- pp. 715-716: flashback — Ruth listing her baby's jailed father's "wittier aliases" when the hand strikes; Ruth's vinyl strap gives, Kate's Filene's all-cotton French-braided macramé strap holds; a whiff "danker than the dankest municipal sewage," five-day facial growth on the "hag"; Ruth grips the red coat, calling the thief "a son of a mafun ho."
- p. 716: the spin — Kate whipped in a circle (Wee Blades Crack-the-Whip reminiscence), the lightpost "rotated toward her, also gaining speed," sound "between a bonk and a clang," violet sun exploding; alone and purseless as both figures recede "shrieking for help."
Endnotes
- n.299 (p. 1054): one line — the GIGABUCKS name is © the Commonwealth of MA's Lottery Authority. Subsidized-era branding reflex even in gutter litter.
Themes in this scene
- Depression and Anhedonia: Kate's flat, anesthetized processing of her own head injury — she narrates her possible brain damage with the same detached dread she brings to It; even assault can't fully penetrate the anhedonic glass.
- Addiction and Recovery: two Ennet House residents on a supervised errand become street victims; the robber is himself a Withdrawn addict stealing to fund a habit — recovery's ecosystem and the street's predation are one continuous economy.
- Communication and Solipsism: nobody connects — the "witness" performs witnessing for passersby while begging from the victim; pedestrians' practiced no-attention; Kate can't even produce "Go Away."
Connections
Backward
- Continues directly from Kate and Ruth van Cleve's paired walk (pp. 698-700, scene 136), where the two were sent off together after Ruth's discharge.
Forward
- Same event from the thief's POV in scene 144 (Poor Tony, pp. 719-721) — there the "meaty sound" of Kate hitting the pole makes Tony shudder; the chase's end (Ruth tripped by a rolled waste-barrel) is heard at distance by Lenz in scene 148 (p. 728). A three-camera 14-Nov montage.
- Poor Tony last seen post-discharge, planning exactly this purse-work (scene 133, pp. 689-691) — before that mid-Withdrawal in the library men's room (scene 126, p. 655) after seizing on a Gray Line train (scene 069, pp. 299-307); this robbery is his Withdrawal-funding relapse into Harvard Square "trade-devices," and it carries him straight toward the A.F.R.-occupied Antitoi alley (scenes 143/145/147) — the purses' trail effectively delivers him to the wheelchairs.
- Kate's empty bunk and the dread of her return are registered by Joelle, cleaning the 5-Woman room at this same hour (scenes 146, 152, p. 752) — dramatic irony: Joelle fears Kate walking in; Kate is concussed on Prospect St.
- The bum's machine-like jerkiness ("jerky, as in a film missing frames," "shook like an old machine") rhymes uncannily with Selwyn's "metal people" rant at Ennet House the same evening (scene 149, pp. 733-735).
Notable passages
- p. 715: "Concussion is really another word for a bruised brain... The lightpost she held herself up with was what had hit her." — the scene's whole cruel logic in two sentences; Kate clinging to what hurt her is the addiction/depression structure in miniature.
- p. 715: "that studious, urban kind of no-attention" — figurant-city texture; anchor passage for communication-solipsism.
- p. 716: the Crack-the-Whip sentence — childhood rink memory spliced mid-trauma; the violet sun and the sky/sidewalk switch; ends "both seeming to be shrieking for help," victim and thief indistinguishable.
