Boston AA teaches the member to re-read his whole life through the progressive-disease model — Gately "at the podium" concludes the disease was at work from the very first drink (the illusion of control — Substances only after sunset, in-season abstinence — the disease eventually overruns). Addiction is understood as cross-substance and cunning: his first exposure "to the concept of real addiction and what it can turn someone into" came not from drugs but from the bookie Sorkin's compulsive-gambler debtors, one-more-bet men, whose self-deception he later recognizes as identical to his own (173).
