• What: The whole grammar of a twelve-step fellowship is modeled through Joelle's U.H.I.D. (Union of the Hideously and Improbably Deformed), an explicit AA analogue: Steps, chips "for Varying Lengths," admitted powerlessness as the First Step, a-day-at-a-time, the promise that the group will "love you till you can like love yourself," a room made level because everyone shares the affliction so you can quit hiding — U.H.I.D.'s variation being to "hide openly," donning the veil rather than concealing the urge to conceal. The scene also enacts the recovery ethic underneath two damaged people trading their worst — the event 9 Identification-not-Comparison node, here modeled through a fellowship analogue rather than re-derived — with Gately working his "professional Staff face" as the newcomer tests him.
